Napa

I worked for Napa in Edmonton and Calgary in multiple locations in both cities. I was with Napa for at least 5 years. 

Managers in Edmonton were delighted to deligate any and all of their tasks to employees below them they think are well suited to the task. They picked favorite staff members who didn't have to work as much, as hard, and got preferential scheduling. My first year with Napa in Edmonton I had 2 weekends off (Saturday and Sunday) out of 52, and the only reason  I got those weekends off is because I requested the time off 6 months prior, and I was still asked to work them both multiple times before the time off came. 

In Calgary I had a very enjoyable experience for about 3 years. Napa has a program that allows you to have your education paid for to get your Red Seal in Parts. I utilized this program while I was there which was wonderful, once my manager set me up for it but it took a long time to get into the program. I asked for about a year and a half and gave my notice before they put me in the program. There were some culture issues, but nothing crazy or unmanageable due to the small size of my store and limited staff. 

Until a few years ago when my store was broken into. I was the first on scene and I was also on the alarm call list. I was chastised for tending to the situation improperly, despite being provided zero training on how the company would want us to respond to a b&e.

After all this wraps up and we get back to business as usual, they suspended & then terminated my store manager with no explanation to him or us. NO severance package and walked out of his store by his managers after 19 years of loyal service. 

After my manager was gone, they left the store with no Manager or Assistant manager.  The 2 supervisors there were expected to step and do all of the manager and assistant managers duties, included scheduling and approving RTOs for their coworkers. After 6 months of being without any management in the building, instead of promoting the people who stepped up (one of which was me). I was told that our performance saved the store from closing permanently during the Pandemic. Not two weeks later they brought in a manager from a different district and told both of us "There is no way that you will ever be promoted to a management position in the store that your started as a supervisor at because it creates friction when someone get promoted then has to be the boss of their "friends."". But that logic some how doesn't apply if you don't have a title and your just supposed to "boss" your coworkers around with no title or actual authority given. So no ability to discipline staff if needed (it was needed VERY badly). There was a counterman who I caught sleeping in the parts shelves,  he was never reprimanded or written up for literally sleeping on shift. I was reprimanded for taking a personal call that was less than 2 minutes WHILE I was in the washroom. I was gone less than 5 minutes total and i was performing my Asssistant Managers job duties when I was reprimanded for "not doing my job"... From that day on I was told I needed to tell my Assistant Manager EVERY time I used the bathroom. 

When I applied for the assistant manager position for all of Calgary, I was told that I needed to do more work at home on my personal issues. I have general anxiety and chronic depression, I have managed well, but was passed over for that as well as "not being available on weekends because I have a stepson". I was willing to work weekends, I just asked for a set schedule so I knew which days I would have off in a week and could plan my medical appointments. I was told I was passed over for my lack of availability on weekends i told thwm that was an incorrect statement and passed over anyways. I eventually tired of the nonsense I was getting from upper management and quit. 

If they can treat a 19 year loyal, and well performing employee that poorly for no explainable reason, then that is somewhere I don't think values their employees. That as well as everything else I detailed, and much more I cannot say is why i felt it is important to review my previous employeer as I would not wish the "Napa Experience" on anyone. Companies should value their People over profits and politics. Your people in stores are who actually make you money. 

This job is not worth the money or stress, save yourself the time and energy.

This is what I consider an "entry level" parts tech job. 
They don't pay well considering the amount of knowledge that is expected, It will, however, get you the experience you need to get a real partsmans job at John Deere or wherever else. On a positive note; the staff discount is pretty tasty, so if you buy a lot of napa-ish stuff it kinda makes up for the trash pay. Honestly, I'd rather get paid better, and get less of a discount.
The constant woke BS is really annoying. Womens day this, pride month that.. I don't care - I like machines, and not having ideology shoved down my throat.
But yeah.. If you're halfways competent, it should serve as a good stepping stone in a partsmans career. otherwise.. don't expect a lot.

I gave my ratings because:
overall - I averaged my other choices, then dropped a star for the levels of bureaucracy, and "woke-ness".
work/life - I work 8-5.. I don't have to care about work outside of that. That's a serious plus for me considering I've been 'on-call' for 15 years prior.
compensation - garbage pay, but good discounts. Benefits seem to be the absolute bare minimum, and I can't opt out.
security/advance - I'm actually competent, so I'm not worried about job security. I've 'advanced' as far as I can already (without taking on a specialist, or management job (neither of which interest me)
management - local management is great, the further up the line you go, the worse things get
job culture - not entirely sure what this means, but I assumed it meant corporate culture. In which case, the company is absolutely terrible. Zero trust in staffs ability and/or integrity, and woke to the nines.. (what a shocker..) Too many burners, not enough earners.
All in all... do what you gotta do.




You are assigned a specific role everyday for an indefinite period that you must be independent at with little to no training. This role rarely changes so your output is limited by their management. You are working with people, many of whom do not have the skills to train yet are expected to "onboard" you. They cannot. There is no "training", there is onboarding. If you cannot do something, you are criticized and ridiculed instead of helped. If your task is finished, you ask a manager countless times what's next since if you go out of your way to find someone to help, you are turned away in disdain. If they do need help, it is yelled at you and demanded.

If you are within your probationary period, they will provide ZERO notes on your work ethic nor give you any further training or time to improve. This is a no experience job yet they do not provide the opportunity to make things work. They will host meetings, praising the stats and the company's "history of good management", telling you there are no stupid questions then never communicate to you in person that things need to improve. 

You can finish all your tasks as fast and accurate as possible then get a decent or good monthly review, only to get immediately fired with no notice because you do not fit the requirements despite countless other temporary/permanent hires doing the exact same job as you with the same if not less effort and enthusiasm.

If you are not fired for uncommunicated reasons, then you have years ahead of you, picking things up and putting them down for decent pay.

I was loyally employed here for 2 years and 2 months, but unfortunately have had to quit out of frustration.
 I started as a driver making $18.35 and after 6 months was moved up to Shipper/Reciever at a wage increased to $19.95. The shipper/reciever will unload 3-5 pallets in a day consisting of up to 1000LBS per pallet, each item must be scanned into stock and sorted in bins, then one must go through variances and adjust any overs or shorts. It is then ones responsibility to get all items put away in a neat and orderly fashion.
The coworkers, the customers, the benefits, and the deal on auto parts is INCREDIBLE. But that's where the good ends. This location is the 2nd largest in BC, and due to a wage-cap the sole shipper/reciever will make the same as the S/R in a significantly smaller store despite workload. You will not recieve raises of any significance, but a percentage raise to keep up with inflation so you take home is even year through year, this goes to show that going above and beyond will bring you no benefit outside of words of affirmation. This also stands with certifications. I had obtained both my first aid and Forklift certification, but unfortunately saw no adjustment in pay despite being able to be a more significant asset in the warehouse.
All in all, is the S/R a good job? Definitely. But it is in NO sorts any true career for an adult, while I worked here I required a second job at night just to keep bills paid.

I wouldn't recommend this job to anyone. 

The work culture is completely toxic, managers favorite certain employees and they are allowed to get away with anything, are given special treatment.

It's a revolving door company that sees hard working, long time and loyal workers being slighted constantly.

Management is a complete joke. Everything is about politics and the bottom line. They do not care about employees unless you are willing to throw your coworkers under the bus to get ahead, in which case you are rewarded. 

Been with the company 6 years and have had 5 different managers. I've seen exemplary employees fired over nothing while the lackeys are promoted or promoted because they are family/family friends. 

Pay rate is way lower then it should be based on the 'tight ship' you are expected to run while also being under staffed. 

They say they care about what their employees have to say but that's a complete lie. I've never once had my concerns taken seriously.

Horrible place to work, don't waste you're time with a company that isn't interested in helping employees grow with the company. The only benefit of working here is the discount on car parts

The one thing you will notice right off the start is there are different rules for different people. If you are a smoker you can spend your entire day outside not doing anything. If you work at the front desk and there are no customers in the front you can sit on Facebook all day with no regard for helping out where needed. If you happen to be the stock boy you can do anything but your job. The assistant manager can also do what ever he pleases. For example take off for 2 hour lunches or surf the internet all day. However there are a select number of people who are expected to never stop working and if you are caught so much as looking at you phone to check the time, watch out! There is a relatively high turn over rate for a reason. If you decide to work here watch your back and remember it's your priorities that are mixed up not the people surfing the internet and smoking all day.

Napa Auto Parts was an amazing place to work, I loved the atmosphere and the people that were around me all the time. I learned many things, like money handling skills, how to deal with people (in whatever mood they are in), how to work hard, and time management.

typical day at work consisted of delivering parts, aiding customers in their search for parts, cleaning and filing of paperwork.

I would say the hardest part of the job was making everyone happy, as a delivery driver you have to do the best you can to deliver parts in a timely manner, and sometimes it was difficult to do if you had lots of deliveries to do and a 20 min window frame to do it in, but it taught me customer service and how to deal with people very well. So although it was difficult, it taught me very valuable lessons

the most enjoyable part was interaction with all the people. I loved being with and around different people every day. Trying to make people smile and meeting new people was something I really really enjoyed.

I loved the work at did at this company, I was always challenged. I looked after 16 stores accounts payable. I ensure that the stores received all product that the suppliers were invoicing them for. I was responsible for ensure that all paperwork was completed by each store every month. I had Nightly Billings which was stock orders sent to the stores from the DC, Drop Ships which were billings from the outside suppliers; which were special orders the store had made, I also, reconciled the credits from the DC and outside suppliers and then ensure that the store received the product that wasn't credited due to being refused, labeled wrong, or should have been wrote off so I can make the proper gross profit adjustments. I ran 5 systems which informed us when credits were entered, when and on which credit memo, it also informed us of bills and again on which numbered drop ship or nightly billing, the other systems would show when cheques were issued, number of cheque and date issued for our suppliers. I trained new personnel, relieved reception, as well as I did basic office duties.

The day would start off fast as many garages would be calling to place orders for automotive parts.  This would require quick part look up in our system of the vehicle, billing of the merchandise, picking the parts and dispatching a driver to deliver.  The day would continue with walk in customers as well.  As certain times of the day would slow down, I would move on to the accounting side of the business.  Managing acoounts receivable and payable, pst and gst remittances, source deductions, payroll, and bank deposits.  I used Simply accounting to maintain the accounting records and invoices.  I would also make regular sales visits to new and existing customers to form relationships and promote sales incentives.  At the end of the day I would run the reports, close cash and debit machines and lock up.  My day was always different and always interesting.
