I was a research assistant with the social science team at the Forest Service. At the beginning of my term I was given list of papers which I was required to annotate in addition to other assignments which I received during the course of the contract. The hours were flexible as long as I completed the required hours within the term period and my supervisor was extremely understanding when it came to time off due to personal or school purposes. 

I mostly read and annotated the articles provided and conducted other searches in the middle to give myself a break from reading. I was given my own office and my supervisor mostly left me to do my work with little to no supervision. However, he was always available when I needed help understanding something. Furthermore, he edited my work once it was complete which helped me not only improve my writing skills but also gave me an opportunity to discuss the research to gain a better understanding of the subject matter. 

Overall this was a great learning opportunity!

A typical day would start by reviewing previous day events in the aluminium, mining, metal refining and metal processing industries. Take note of new information, if significant investigate further and report on it's potential impact, and inform appropriate personnel. Work on briefing notes, access to information requests, and prepare for different committee meetings to work on expert analysis/presentations ( alone or in teams) to advance committee mandates.
The environment was stimulating allowing access / input from many other professionals such as other commodity experts, economists, tax professionals, geologists, industry and environment specialists.
The hardest part of the job were the tight deadlines that were imposed.
The most enjoyable aspects was being able to interact and exchange information with many qualified professional in both the public and private industry.

My day starts at 7:30 am.   I log into email to check for items.  I then create purchase orders or contracts in SAP.  I audit travel claims, research and book travel.   
I deposit, enter AR and reconcile bank deposits in SAP
I process, code and enter invoices for payments checking for proper signatures, quantities and prices of items to ensure accuracy.

My job depends on the incentive programs that the government provides for homeowners. Without these programs, there may be no job

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful and challenging environment.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I do the quality assurance of H2K files and DCF forms according to the EnerGuide Rating System.
Attention to detail and ensuring documentation and file retention for compliance.

Duties included design and development of internal web site and supply design work for conventions and tours. Was also part of a number of committees responsible for planning events that were held throughout Canada. Some design projects completed includes manuals, calendars, post cards, larger formatted posters, annual reports, monthly newsletters, and a number of smaller projects. Other responsibilities included coordinating all out sourced printing projects with local and national printing companies and also managed small printing and supply budget. Also responsible for updating intranet site at main office. Was also responsible for 500,000 for the communications department

- a typical day at work varied depending on the work needed, I assisted the senior surveyors in research and design in ArcMap; other times, I am sending follow up or update emails, shipping packages to other departments, organizing files in the departments server

- the manager treated me well and always helped me if I struggled in any of my work, she made sure to give me a tasks that was not too difficult

- I learned how the office operated and I had my own cubicle

- The hardest part about the job is performing a task that I am not very familiar with, of course I am not expecting to be as professional as the other workers in the office but it was a welcoming challenge

Typical Day at work would start with about and hour of lab maintenance, before setting everything up for test and regular culture transfers, feeding etc. Once everything was set up and cultures were fed tests were started, maintained or concluded daily.

The team I worked within was a lot of fun to work with, management and my supervisors were all good humored, helpful and it created a great working environment.

The most difficult part of the job was working through problems that didn't seem to want a solution. Were some frustrating moments when  tests were not going as planned or completely opposite to expected but eventually the answers were found.

Canadian Forest Service. There is little opportunity for advancement in the technician stream, which is a longstanding issue. Good place to get experience as a term, but indeterminate positions are rare and it's more a matter of luck to get a permanent position. There's little planing for filling or bridging into retirement positions, even though many will retire soon. It can take 6 months+ just to get through the hiring process. The work is enjoyable and I work with some great people.

Working at Natural Resources Canada is very very interesting. There is a lot of talent and dedication from the employees. It is a great place to work and the people are committed and enjoy their jobs. People are very respectful and value your opinion. It is a pleasure to work there.
Unfortunately the Federal Government is in a downsizing situation in order to reduce the debt and future continued employment may not be possible for some jobs.

I worked on a modelling team, aiding other teams and companies in computation simulation of fluid dynamics. The workplace had a good workplace culture with a notable number of sports and activities provided for co-op students at lunch. The hardest part of the job was teaching myself computational fluid dynaimcs, CADing software, and other software required for the job, but never taught to me in my undergraduate degree. A lot of independent studying and research was involved.
