Nightwind Treatment Centre

Nightwind had some great opportunities, and the staff and youth are awesome and the cultural aspect of the program is fantastic. However, management needs improvement as they can be unsupportive during crisis situations which happen often, there is no security on site and hospitals/medicenters are 20-30+ mins away, police don't care when you call because it happens so often and will take 45 mins+ to get there during an emergency when they are only 15-20 mins away, you work alone at night and alone at other times and can feel unsafe. You work 10-12 hour days and sometimes longer, and you get called in on your days off as it is always understaffed and you feel obligated to come in. There's not enough one on one time with the youth and that's what they really need. 

Management is a joke here. The only saving grace of this company is the youth, and they don’t deserve the inconsistency that management causes them through the massive turnover rate. Management will work you to the bone, make you bend over backwards, and then accuse you falsehoods and wonder why they can’t keep staff for longer than 6 months. They refuse to take responsibility for lack of training for their staff and there is never any communication between staff or management about whether there is new intakes, what the policies are for each house, or who to contact as it’s always someone new training someone newer. Not to mention they pride themselves on indigenous based teachings and healing practices yet in the entirety of my employment with the company I can count on one hand how many times there was culture days for the youth; the youth often beg for more culturally relevant activities and our voices went unheard to higher ups. 

So far during my time at Nightwind Treatment Centres, I have been able to grow my career and as a person. When I started I was in a casual position and was able to work my way up from the bottom. During my many years at Nightwind Treatment Centre, I have learnt so much that I wouldn't even know where to begin to start telling you. My job is ever-changing, No two days are ever the same. Going to work is not something I dread, it is something I love to do. If you are empathetic,  knowledgeable in trauma-informed care, have professional boundaries and know job etiquette you will be successful in your role. My job is rewarding as I get to support and teach the young woman how to find positive self-identity, teach them healthy relationships and how to face adversity with courage. 

I'm giving 3 stars because when its good, its great. They can be very understanding and helpful when you are a diligent and dependable employee. But then a switch flips and if they want something to fight with you about, suddenly they will have a bible of concerns and complaints never brought up before. They will praise you when theyre desperate for workers but turn around and completely degrade you when they feel fit. Even the best employees are discarded and treated like garbage the second that management (mostly the ED) thinks they are having troubles or leaving. Very cold hearted to the ones who gave this career their all. And lest we forget the iconic invoice they send to all employees who quit or get fired. 

As a Child and Youth Care Worker at Nightwind I wqs responsible for supervison of the youth and help and encourage the youth to participate in evening programing. The usual hours of work is 2 pm till midnight or 1145 am to midnight. 4 days on 4 days off.

I enjoyed taking the youth on different off site activities such as swimming, recreation centres, the beach, the movies and the mall. The best part about doing this activities was being able to have fun with the youth and build professional relationships. 

Nighwind offers lots of onsite training and there is someone always available to answer any questions I have. 

Incredibly toxic and unkind management. There is constant chaos and very few individuals have the emotional intelligence required to build trust and genuine relationships. The ED  is extremely emotionally abusive. She is chaotic and all over the place. She lacks  regulation skills that all leaders should equip. She encourages staff into UNSAFE environments in order to bring in money. She does not care about the overall well being of the company. 

Overall the company exploits immigrant workers. Puts them in rough working environments and conditions. They encourage cold behaviour. 

DO NOT WORK HERE. 

At Nightwind I felt a part of a team. Working in this type of environment can be stressful at times but also very rewarding. Being able to support the youth by connecting with them is the best part of the job. Being able to work with youth with complex needs does take specialized skills. Staff need to be patient, empathetic and non-judgmental. Staff need to have excellent communication and conflict resolution skills. My supervisor is there to support me and I feel like my opinion is heard. 

Nightwind does important work in the area supporting youth. The programs are excellent and there is lots of opportunity for career advancement. Some comments about management. There are clear policies and procedures developed over many years. If staff make errors, management is there to support them but if they make errors that create serious safety risks then yes discipline can follow. There is lots of support and always people around to ask for help when needed.

Like the title says: don't do it! Working with the kids was wonderful, but they wonder why there is such a high turnover rate with staff. No support from upper management and staff get burnt out fast! The kids are wonderful, struggles and all! But until upper management learns to care for their staff and not completely write them off, especially in front of the youth, it is too hard to work there.
