I worked at this company for almost 6 years. What I've learned?

The management there are not reliable at all. They do NOT take care of their employees but instead micromanage which hurts moral and confidence in being able to complete jobs without failure. They only care about their own motives. They don't use positive reinforcement. Basically, if management wants to talk to you, you're in some kind of trouble. They treat employees like pawns, not like people. They don't recognize good job performance and service, they only pay attention to what "looks bad" to the company. They never used any ideas that I had, or my fellow guards. They cared more about saving money than creating a place where employees and guests can have a memorable experience.

The coworkers I had were great! The relationships I built while I was there still last today. I'm still friends with a majority of those I worked with. They were all bummed when I left the company. Everybody takes care of each other as the management doesn't do that. 

In conclusion, if you are looking for a place to work for just a paycheck, then go ahead. But if you plan on moving up in your career choice,. Northlands is NOT the place to do that.

Typical work day was putting on our jackets/ chef shirts, and then heading down to the dish pit/ kitchen, to find out what we needed to bring up to the banquet halls. we'd carry racks for putting glasses in and carts for plates. and sometimes the chefs would get us to push there portable ovens up to the banquet areas. Then once we got up there we'd set up our clearing tables behind the banquet, so that the public does not see us dealing with there dirty dishes. Once the event would start some of us would be chosen to plate pull, which was pulling the already made plates of food out of a hot oven. 
Once they were all pulled out we'd start clearing or plates and pours out drinks and putting them in there racks. We'd continue on doing this until we had all of the eatery ready to pull back down stairs to the dish pit. 
Hardest part standing and walking for any where between 8 to 10 hours and the handling of hot plates. 
Most enjoyable would be the working with friends staff were friendly.

Beautiful Place to Work and good pay but....very poor manage because this place it's so big there is no supervision at all. "The Real" supervisor will be 10 blocks away from this place. 
You would have to be an Asskisser to the supervisor in other to give you the "better" Jobs or less hard work if not prepare to do eventually everything else while everyone else will chat in the office on working hours. 
They hired me under knowledge of computers and adobe illustrator skills but it was the VERY LEAST thing I did, in fact ! you will be replace by some gardener or student first on the computer  before you! 
It was very disappointment to had lived this experience, I apply for this job for the opportunities that would had come for my future but I had to quit before my time because it was absurd to work like that!

Everyday you were required to have precise attention to detail and what the customers were telling you. You would be working with over 10 race tracks per shift that all had specific codes. As an employee you were required to be fast when entering customer bets as well as overly accurate to make sure the bet was placed correctly before the race began or Northlands would take financial losses.


All about how your data was input into the system, one mistake could cost a customer hundreds to thousands of dollars, and it was always a fast paced environment with repetitive tasks.

Overall it was a fun place to work once you knew how to do your job correctly, although the training provided was short of what should be taught to new employees.

Working there is hardly "work", you mostly stand in one spot for hours, it's not great for your legs or back and depending on where you're stationed you might not have time to stretch properly during shift.

Besides the light physical demands the job is incredibly easy, parking cars aside it mostly boils down to answering customer questions and trying to keep neat rows in the parking stalls.

On the note of interacting with customers you should be ready to be yelled at by them during busy events, exhibitors will have their stalls taken and will take out their frustrations on you and this happens frequently.

My Days start at 0600 or 1800 hours. Day shifts are slow until 0930 and then busy until shift end. Nights shifts are busy right off the bat and quiet afterwards. The Job is enjoyable, but there is alot to learn. I have seen a change in management over the last two years. I am on my fourth manager since I started six and half years ago. As with any job, this job has had alot of turn over.

This job has taught me to schedule better, to be a better supervisor, how to handle disagreements between staff and how to be more effective in teaching. My report writing has gotten better and I have to give credit to my current manager, she teaches me to the point I understand what she wants. I am still learning.

A typical day at work would include me making popcorn, setting up the concession, getting the float and saying hello to the locals. Next me and my coworkers would work until the concession closed. then at this point we would count the cash and send it off to the bank. i learned how to use a cash register, and i became more of a people person. the coworkers we more like friends to me, especially the people i worked with in the concession. the hardest part of the job was derby day because of how busy it was, and the most enjoyable part was working with cool people.

Working during KDays is a great 10-day job that's relatively stress free and a nice quick summer job for students looking for experience! The interview process is quick and easy. Dress code is pretty straightforward, just basic black or blue jeans with the Northlands t-shirt which they do provide upon employment. There is also a paid training which is nice. You can access all 10 days of the event for free and they usually give out 1 free ride pass on one of the days.

Never got a break after standing for 5+ hours in the same spot. Couldn't go to the washroom because no one would take over the till. No break = no food. Hungry most of the time. Management was rude and never recognized anything positive, even when they say they'll give you an award they don't. Only good thing is free drinks. Some co-workers were very rude and management didn't punish bullies. Very unsanitary, some workers would touch shoes and then food. Old moldy food was served often in the concession.

Nortlands was good to me, I advanced on numerous occasions and they offered me lots of training and education. It's a fast paced environment with different events all year. There was a wide range of buildings and grounds to Maintain and I got a lot of experience both in the  Maintenance and public attended events on the grounds and in the Venues. K-Days was one of the hardest events because of time lines, the weather and the number of people involved in getting everything right for opening day.
