NSHA is just an OK place to work. The salary, job security, and benefits are the only good things this employer has to offer. You will, in time, be disgusted by the bloat and dormancy that is universally accepted, and promoted. It is a very middle-management heavy organization, yet for all the management, no one wants to make a decision and there is no accountability. Collective agreements are barely followed, and barely upheld, consider it have no union representation. Amalgamation has stalled which is funny because it never got started. There is little interest in changing for the better or being efficient. There is a very strong hierarchy here too, good luck if you're near the bottom because you will barely be appreciated or respected. You will not be working for a cutting edge, patient and healthcare focused, and innovative organization. Money is never spent in the right direction. All of this is the biggest contributor to why healthcare access and quality is poor in this province. 

If you can sometimes show up, do the bare minimum, ignore how poorly it is ran, ignore the cultural issues, and appreciate job security with a decent pension and benefits, you'll be okay. 

Food service is generally always hiring so it is an easy way to get a unionized position and it introduces you to most of the hospital.  You have to be constantly looking for a permanent position the whole time you are working and you get the ‘carrot on a stick’ routine with management saying there may be positions opening up and then the last minute they say no. The permanent staff can basically do and say whatever they want and will talk over you at meetings. The temp staff have their work nitpicked about the smallest things. It is very exhausting to be held to a higher standard while doing the same job as a permanent employee. You get called constantly on your days off and sometimes have to say no to a shift TWICE. Reporting things is a nightmare and makes you think twice about bothering because nothing is done about anything. If you can tolerate this for a few years (!) you might get a chill permanent job but it’s a struggle. 

Most people get hired on in one department and move into over ones over time. Your allowed to apply to other jobs within the company. There's lots of work available. Some jobs are harder then others and the staff are very different in every department. Most departments have friendly staff. Management is hit or miss. Overtime is double time (once you hit 70hrs bi weekly). The staff and manager's are very honest and encouraging (usually). 
Sick time accumulates over time and carries over every year (4 years in and you could have over 30 days of sick time available). Vacation carry over is available. Vacation time is 2 weeks to start and you get 3 weeks after 4 years and I believe 4 weeks after so many years (I can't remember #).
You can call into work and say you don't have child care and you won't get repercussions (unpaid or you use a bank i believe).

What is the best part of working at the company?
Everything! The job, the people but mainly knowing that I am personally helping to save someone’s life possibly from every referral that I send and is accepted by a highly skilled surgeon in our four zones.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Getting declines back meaning a patient cannot be seen by that particular surgeon I sent them to, and to now have to try and find another surgeon who will accept the referral.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Diverse and amazing, laid back, family environment as we all treat eachother with respect and we value one another and the work that we do.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day can either be a stressful day or a not stressful day but it usually ends with me being satisfied with how my day panned out to be.

Typical workdays- very busy, fun, patient caring comes easy, happy days
I learned that shining and successful teamwork is soul fulfilling but then sadly I learned others worked to crush that. Even worse, it was our management that orchestrated unbearable toxicity both directly and behind the scenes. HR and my Union were both decidedly useless because they are both culpable in the mess made (enabling). There was/is no remedy nor law within the current structure.
Hardest part- taking the force out of the job I love and into mental distress, sickness. Until I am able to accept daily abuse I don’t belong at NSH, my once happy place to work.
-They abide no policies nor rules for employee/human rights when it is a manager’s misconduct at issue and NSH just becomes more and more liable for it.-

My day consists of getting 8 patients (residents) ready for there day. This could consists of just setting them up for breakfast or totally doing everything for them. My job is to make them feel good, like they mean something to someone. I have learned that life is not easy it throws you curve balls all the time. It has made me a stronger person, my job is very rewarding to me because when I go home each nite I know I did whatever I could to make that persons day a better day for them. I helped someone that needed the help. I would not be in the profession if I didn't care about people. You really have to be a certain type of person to do this job. It is so rewarding to see the smiles on the faces of these people. This job can also be stressful mentally and physically, emotional, very rewarding and depressing. I know when I leave everyday I did my best for each and everyone of these people.

Administrative duties serving management team and clients. I have learned to increase my ability in pay more attention to details skills, effectiveness, and being able to work with a variety of cultures. Working with management was an excellent opportunity to increase my education and experience in certain areas of technology ( adobe connect) and skills in office procedures. The culture of my workplace is second to none, we work well together, listen and respect each other and help one another. The most challenging part of the job is when we are short staffed but we work well to come together to best serve the physicians. The most enjoyable part of my job is the team I work with we are professional and know how to laugh with one another and lift each other up.

Onboarding for my high-level position was awful. Management has been there so long they assume everyone automatically understands everything about the specific policy area - which in itself is horribly fragmented and disorganized on an administrative level. Instructions were vague, and help nonexistent - requests were greeted with disdain at best and open contempt at worst. 

The front line are dedicated and do what they need to do to help patients - but it's an administrative nightmare because everyone does things differently - holdovers from the old DHAs. Nobody wants to change, and management doesn't want to upset anyone, so nothing ever improves or changes. The whole 'system' needs to be knocked down and rebuilt as an actual system. I will NEVER work in health care again.
