What is the best part of working at the company?
The people are the best part of working at Novelis. They truly work as a team, and put everyone's safety above every other consideration. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The economic environment with product/materials subject to US tariffs creates uncertainty.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I found the company culture and work environment both personal and professional. The management team really seemed to care about their employees, and professionally, there were opportunities for development, education and advancement.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I had the opportunity to interact with corporate staff, community members and production workers every day. I supported health and safety initiatives, kept employees informed of corporate communications and ensured everyone was supplied with adequate safety gear and uniforms. I helped facilitate hospitality for meetings, and travel for employees.

Administered employee benefits and dealt with employee concerns on a daily basis. During my 32+ years with Novelis (formerly Alcan), I  have gained valuable knowledge in administration, human resources and worked with many different managers over my career. The employee workforce was quite diverse, with people from all over the world. It was a great experience to learn about their cultures and also to help them adjust to Canadian life. During my time with Novelis, the Kingston site went through quite a bit of restructuring. It was very difficult to see colleagues and friends losing their job. It was also difficult to deal with the announcement that the site would be closing in July 2013. The most enjoyable part of working for Novelis was helping organize all of the special events and helping to implement a Wellness Program and upgrading the fitness centre.

As a temporary student worker: 

- they teach you the basics:  Safety first for you and others, and then be the most productive at your role

- you learn how this facility produces and supplies GTAs and Ontario's foil products for foods

- beware of summer weather, no proper AC in the facility

At this job, you are most of the time in solitude at your own machine/press making sure that the machine is fully operational and that the product it produces is 100%. I have learned to be my "own boss" in this situation and how to deal with great responsibilities on my own. My management and co-workers were great to work with.

Over my summer at Novelis, I learned quickly and there was no pressure on me to know everything or be concerned with the big things. My crew was incredibly understanding and taught me well. I had an amazing time over the summer (despite shift work, its not as bad as you think) and would love to go back if I ever got the chance.

Long hours, fast paced, great co-worker relationships, friendly people, not sure about how loyal they are to their employees, a lot of employee turnover, hardest part about job is that it is very demanding and expected to drop everything to help out anytime of the day and any day of the week

If you are good at limiting your own hours, it may work for you. You have opportunities for growth, but can get overwhelmed with a very full plate. Interesting work. The number of admin tasks are growing though with increasing number of policies

Excellent workplace to work and develop a professional career. The management staff promotes self development so you have to have a clear career expectations to design your own path within the company. Nobody will held your hand and walk you to the success way.

They give production employees lots of different type of SAFTEY training,WHMIS,LEAN MANUFACTURING, BEHAVIOR BASED SAFETY TRAINING, FORKLIFT SAFTEY TRAINING ....ETC

The people are good to work with but management is very poor as their experience is non existent in the areas in which they are in charge. Maintenance is especially chaotic and it is quite stressful trying to plan and execute daily routines without having much help
