A typical shift for me was 2-5 days living with a high risk client in the community. I cooked, cleaned, provided company and did the more technical side of the job (such as assistance with bathing, Peri care, vital checks etc.) Part of the job was also giving the family assurance that their loved one would be well taken care of while care was there. This means that making sure charting was done in a routine manner and accurate, and making sure the client felt comfortable with me in their home. 

While this may seem like a lot to be responsible for, the management of the Esquimalt Region for Nurse Next Door is impeccable. There was never a time when I felt that there was no one available to call or talk to. When I did call, my bosses were always friendly and kind and made me feel like a needed and appreciated part of their company. The biggest part for me, was that they actually said "thank you" whenever I took a shift. This was new for me and came as a surprise, but they genuinely mean it because they are genuine and good people dedicated to giving your loved ones the best care they can.

I didn't get to see a lot of my co-workers, and this can be a downside to the job as there are limited opportunities to connect with other like-minded people, but the clients you meet more than make-up for this fact. Which brings me to the most enjoyable part of the job that doubles as the hardest. The people you meet and care for will be some of the best people you will encounter in your life. If you listen to them, they will share so many beautiful and sometimes heartfelt moments that it will be impossible not to carry with you for the rest of our life. You will laugh, and smile, and later when you have to leave the client, you just may cry. These people that you become so intimate with in such a short amount of time will force their way into your heart, but part  of the job is to make sure you do not become very attached. When you leave, you have to leave that relationship until your job with that company is finished or you are required to assist the client once more. 

I guarantee you, that if you are lucky enough to be hired on to this amazing company, you will not regret it. You will be treated with respect and dignity, and appreciated. Good luck!

I had the displeasure of working with Nurse Next Door for a couple of months before walking away as a result of numerous issues including lack of communication, terrible management, lack of positive workplace culture, rampant gossip, a ridiculous amount of absenteeism and tardiness among staff, billing and payroll issues...the list goes on and on. The scheduling system is a complete and utter mess. Call center staff are constantly blamed for anything wrong with the company despite the fact most of NND's issues stem from the top down. There are constant complaints from clients being billed incorrectly and cancelling services as a result. Despite the fact I brought this up to "management" (I use the term loosely) numerous times, the issue was NEVER addressed. In addition, management does not respect your time and ask daily if staff can work overtime or during their days off. Schedules are inconsistent and change constantly due to the fact there is so much absenteeism and staff turnover. They also pay below industry average for their Caregivers and Nurses. You're expected to respond to every task and email IMMEDIATELY as everything is marked "Urgent". The job itself isn't challenging, it's just frustrating because the workload is completely unmanageable and there is no process and lack of expectations. You will get no support from "management" as the Call Centre is self-managed (uh...okay). There is no performance management, coaching or professional development. I've worked in a number of work environments with some level of chaos but nothing compares to Nurse Next Door. I honestly don't understand how the company stays afloat aside from furiously selling Franchises. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!

While boasting their morals to be a supportive environment, management actively shows favoritism in the workplace; the workplace hierarchy is like a food chain with Upper management on top, then Care Designers,  schedulers, Care Workers, then overnight staff at the bottom of the barrel. Most of the coworkers I worked with consistently were supportive and fun to be around each day, but it was difficult to see them struggle same as I did; whether it was dealing with sick calls, vacation/time off, or solving inner-workplace conflict; management always seemed to put our interests last.

The main conflict I dealt with was a coworker who seemed to be lazy and constantly not help with answering calls; I went to management to ask for advice or assistance and specifically asked them to keep things private so as not to cause drama, I was told to talk to them directly and basically just to deal with it and figure it out myself.
I mentioned it to my coworker and she seemed to improve,  but I found out later that that manager (who was friends with said coworker) had gone behind my back to my coworker to gossip about the issue I'd asked her to keep quiet. One day after she'd begun to decline again, doing the bare minimum and leaving the rest of us hanging with the rest of the calls, I sarcastically said 'Thanks' to her, (which in hindsight was a bit rude on my part) this caused her to explode at me, accusing me of trying to tattle on her and telling me to mind my own business. 

It wasn't long after I decided to move on to new and better things, to somewhere I feel more appreciated and like an integral part of the team, instead of just another drop in the ocean.

You're worth more than this place, go work for the hospital instead; at least they'll pay you more.

Prior to starting with the company, I made it clear that I did not drive and would be relying on public transportation. I was more than willing and capable of travelling to and from work using available transit.

On the morning of my first shift, I learned that my assigned client lived approximately 15 minutes outside the city with no accessible bus route. I immediately contacted management, and we agreed that transportation costs would be covered temporarily while a more suitable client within the city was found.

I was matched with a client who was an excellent fit, and management occasionally assisted with transportation, which I appreciated. However, I frequently had to follow up regarding my pay on scheduled paydays. I was told there was an issue with my direct deposit information, despite my banking information being submitted correctly.

Approximately three weeks into my employment, another PSW was sent to shadow me so they would be familiar with the client and routine if I ever needed time off. At the end of that shift, management informed me that the other PSW would be taking over the client and that I would be assigned someone closer to town.

Nearly three months later, I still had not been provided with another client. During that time, I repeatedly followed up and was consistently told that opportunities would be available soon, but no work was ever offered.

I understand that client availability can change and that staffing needs fluctuate. However, I was disappointed by the lack of communication, follow-through, and transparency regarding available work. My experience left me feeling misled and unable to rely on the company for consistent employment.

Not a nice company to work for, actually i started off working for a different company, then there was some sort of name switch or something, they call you in to sign a paper and gave you a t-shirt, next thing i know i'm working for them.

They would call last minute especially on the weekend and expect you to drop what you have going on to full a shift and if you don't they would threaten or actually remove the clients that you would go to normally, if you don't answer, i had this happened to me this past weekend, they removed the clients i had from my schedule because i did not answer when they called me on my phone.

They talked about the clients having consistency with the same care-giver? it's a lie, they are always changing the caregivers, you would know this because the client would tell you.

let's say you're living in Niagara fall, they would want to send you to Welland to work for 1 hr, which is ridiculous, on top of that they are not paying you milage for your car nor do they gave you a work phone or contribute to your phone bill.

They do not know how to speak or refuse to speak to the workers with respect, if they want something from you, they would send a text message with threats that they would remove your clients or take you off the schedule if you don't comply and mind you this would be the first time they are talking about this issue with you!

I am not going back to work for them and would not recommend anyone to.


What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part about working there was definitely the clients and the flexibility. I really enjoyed building relationships and being able to help people. The flexibility was good at first but sometimes it blurred the lines between work and personal time.

The most stressful part was the inconsistent hours and company culture. We were expected to keep open availability without guaranteed hours, which affected earning potential. There was also a sense of toxic positivity, open communication was encouraged, but feedback often felt one-sided and met with defensiveness

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment varied a lot by franchise. Head office emphasized “making lives better” and being a premium brand, but there was a strong sense of toxic positivity, and real concerns were often brushed off.

Over time, it felt like growth and franchise expansion were prioritized over direct client care. Many locations are run by non-healthcare trained owners, which made the business focus more noticeable compared to competitors.

The best part of working at Nurse Next Door is the chance to build meaningful relationships with clients while helping them stay safe, happy, and independent in their own homes. The team is supportive, and the company truly values caring and compassion.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part was managing unexpected behavioral challenges or crisis situations. Over time, these situations strengthened my problem-solving skills and deepened my confidence as a support worker.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is supportive and team-focused. Staff help each other, and supervisors are approachable. The culture is about respect, inclusion, and making sure the people we support feel safe and valued. Everyone works together to create a positive space for both residents and staff.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day involves helping the Client with their daily routines like bathing, dressing, meals, and medications. I also support them with activities, appointments, and personal goals. I make sure they feel safe, respected, and included. Every day is different, but it’s always about caring and supporting others the best I can.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Most amazing training offered to all staff of the NND franchise. The Core Values I have gained from NND I have taken with me everywhere I may find myself. The inclusiveness and equality for all team members is felt across the entire team warmly and support each other. There is room for growth and where coachable moments are shared to achieve successes for all Caregivers and Peoples receiving in services. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
For myself, being a one person household income I needed to seek more in terms of benefits, pension and pay rate at the time. I would rejoin NND in a heart beat if I could manage it in my schedule. I understand there are many wonderful perks that have been added since 2019 and I look forward to watching this Company grow and grow as they are #1 in care offerings as far as I'm concerned as a staff employee and as a service to community.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Purpose Passion and Growth every step of the way.

Management is very dismissive. When I reach out for help, they tell me that this was discussed with me before even though I was never actually given training for some of the things they expect of me as a care aide. One care designer seems to get annoyed when I ask for help in any way and makes me feel like I know nothing instead of being supportive and offer guidance. Expectations are very unclear. They will say one thing and when you do it, get mad that you did it and say something new, even though it was in the policies and procedures handbook. Management is very unprofessional when spoken to. They will ask personal things that do not relate to work and use that against you as to why something is lacking. Then when you confront them, they call you so its an undocumented conversation as opposed to what was sent through email/message. They say they take pride in helping families but when a staff member has family responsibilities they do not care and cannot empathize with you when situations arise, such as needing to call in sick for a sick child. Instead, they make suggestions as if you did not already try other options before needing to do that. Very unhappy with how they were treating me and when brought up an issue with another staff, was dismissed.

I worked in the head office location for a few months before deciding to leave due to the lack of training and mismanaged department. The people and the culture are amazing but the level of training provided during the onboarding process was not at all what was promised during the interview process. After two weeks of learning how the systems and technology work, you are just expected to jump in and do the job right away with no supervision or the "buddy system" which is what was glorified in my interview. The work itself isn't hard but there are so many little moving parts that are hard to learn when no one is showing you how to navigate them along with being understaffed. My first shift after training there was only myself and another new employee managing all the scheduling alone all evening long, phones blowing up, messages and emails constantly flowing in; I had no time to catch my breath and felt so alone with no one to turn to for help. There was no efforts made to solve the understaffing issues either, a few people were hired but they all left after 1-2 weeks, probably because they were also not given what they were promised. Only good thing about this place is the people, everyone is so welcoming and happy to help.
