Oerlikon used to be a good place to work, however, over the last 5 month or so production is being told to work 12hr days and a day on the weekend. 

They are also in the process of laying people off, most with out any notice and the bare minimum package they have to offer. This  despite the effort everyone WAS putting in to try to make the company great again. Now it seems most people are here just waiting for a package or another opportunity.

With the continues loss of business to our competition, who unlike Oerlikon, has continued to innovate and is now further ahead of us In terms of technology and customer service. Management responses to the threat by simply demanding workers work harder and more hours ...... the product of an ineffective SMT.

To top off the issues with this company, Oerlikon is a very small company in Canada (less then 18 ppl) so with a small flat org there is no room to advance. So I am basicly working not to get fired....

I have started looking for new employment and I would recommend that people read all the reviews before accepting a position here. These issues seem to be a cultural issue not just a guelph issue.

Amongst other projects mostly production, I was assigned the complete technical tasks in the development of a high power machine that transformed the 1700 volts to standard 120VAC and 220VAC for passenger and cooking needs of passenger trains. Great fun, but I left after 5 months for a more convenient job. This was only a short term replacement position and the commute was difficult and far with the price of gas hitting $1.40 for the first time. Plus my allergies were really strong in the middle of huge fields. I wouldn't go back now having fallen victim of high power incidents at other companies. 

Very little to like about this place, it’s a very two tier employer, if they like you, you get free lunches and preferential treatment, if they don’t like you then they come up with way to make your life hard (probably a result of a very inexperienced, foreign management team….). They have a team that was sent in from the USA to “clean up Guelph” and instead told everyone we couldn’t take vacation and they didn’t have to pay us out for the vacation we weren’t allowed to take. 

Management will hire all their friends and give them the positions they want, even if it means that someone who was doing the position before needs to be moved….

The management team seems to have been assembled more based on cost then on skill set, something that comes up a lot with Oerlikon

During my short time at Oerlikon I found my peers did not give any negative feedback while learning the ropes. My fellow workers had nothing but good things to say to my face and once I was very close to reaching the extended probationary period I was let go for reasons that still don't make sense to me now. 
Everything about the job offer, work environment and pay seemed too good to be true. It obviously was. I had a newborn a month before starting this position and getting laid go put huge pressure on my family financially. 
Wish I'd never left my previous job before to go to this one.

There's no stress to work at the company, but the job need a lot patient and attention

Very nice work environment, super clean, air conditioned, free lunch every month, free coffee, management work alone with the works

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Can be quiet and busy day,  shift meeting every day at beginning to inform everyone what to do and problems to solve

I worked there for a short time and I was let go. There is so much backstabbing, favouritism and training very limited. If you know how to fit in by manipulating, gossiping and putting all the blame on others you will get ahead. That’s all supervisors and management is all about and don’t know any better. I wanted to get ahead and learn as much as I could but superiors won’t let you or give you a chance !
Not a good place to work for or room for advancement. If they don’t like you as e person they will make sure have your job taken away from you!

Cleanest Grind Shop anywhere
The Coworkers are in general very easy to work with especially my team. 
I've received some of the best training here. I've been fortunate to work with very talented individuals but without the chest pumping egoes that sometimes are associated with high skill level.

Lots of promises but nothing happens.  Very small workplace, lots of negativity, gossiping, back stabbing and blaming others.   Management changes every 2 months and then talks badly of the previous management.  Very unprofessional.

I was there for a year . Than laid off 

Lots of Managers but no customers. Not enough business.

Managers and engineers all over the place to fix problems.

To bad for me it was a nice place to work.

Difficult days with negative attitudes all around. This is a manufacturing environment with tight deadlines and can be uncomfortable. You're in full ppe all day - latex gloves, masks from air debris. It's dirty, hot and difficult.
