In more than eighteen years as a patrol officer, Detective, and Acting Sergeant with the Ottawa Police Service I have investigated and testified in a broad range of criminal cases including attempted murders, organized auto theft, fraud and domestic violence allegations that have resulted in successful prosecutions. My experience includes investigating numerous criminal frauds.

I have earned a reputation for integrity, loyalty and professionalism not only among my peers and supervisors but also with Crown prosecutors and other law enforcement agencies, including the Ontario Provincial Police, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canadian border officials and the Insurance Bureau of Canada. I have effectively supervised two criminal investigative units as a sergeant and possess excellent management skills. 

My track record of leadership has been formally recognized through numerous commendations and special assignments, including an assignment to the 2010 Winter Olympics and the Northern Investigations Unit, which provides outside investigation for cases of alleged major crime and deaths involving persons while in the custody of RCMP officers in Canada’s Northern Territories.

With a significant background in fraud investigations for the Ottawa Police Service in Ontario, Canada my last posting was in the Organized Auto Theft Section. This squad primarily investigated insurance frauds and focused on organized crime groups that obtained money from defrauding insurance companies. I have worked closely with the National Insurance Crime Bureau as well as the Insurance Bureau of Canada and have references to verify these working relationships. 

My parting criminal project with the Organized Auto Theft Section won an award of excellence with the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators with the focus on insurance “Give Up’s” and/or auto insurance fraud which resulted in eight charged persons and yielded over eighty criminal charges. During my posting to the Organized Auto Theft Section I became a federally certified expert vehicle examiner. 


My leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills allow me to assess a file in a timely manner and develop a detailed and thorough strategy for its investigation. Just as important, I possess proven skills to execute investigations that result in successful prosecutions. 


My strong communication skills have allowed me to excel at the critical interpersonal aspects of investigations including field interviews, interrogations, and criminal court testimony as well as community relations. I am recognized by my supervisors and peers as an experienced and competent interviewer.

Like any other workplace, it depends on who your colleagues and supervisor are. Our director was an extraordinary although extremely demanding person and we all loved working with him. I personally, as his assistant, have learned to overcome challenges, learned about real community service, be more proactive and use issues to learn how to quickly de-escalate an argument and come up with a viable solution. Facing serious issues was our daily duty but we always knew that our director was one step behind to support or encourage us if needed. He set the bar very high for us and he would never miss the occasion to show how proud he was to work with such a dedicated team. He knew how to get the best in each one of us. Our section was the kind of place that you couldn't wait to get to every morning.

Overall it is a great place to work. The salary is competitive and the benefits are very good. Being part of the first responders worlds comes with many sacrifices in regards to family life. 

I have learned to communicate precisely and clearly in stressful situations and to be very tactful while gathering information under critical time lines.

I worked with the Ottawa Police Service Communications Department for a few weeks, then as a consultant for a couple of months afterward. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and they really took the time to ensure I was learning new things and gaining valuable experience in my short placement there.

Unfortunately, the Ottawa Police lacks integrity. They claim to value equity, diversity, and inclusion, but they do not walk the walk. People tend to be overworked and underappreciated. You will be paid very well, but in my humble opinion, the cost is much too great. 

Typical day at work depends on how the day is going for every individual. The easiest way to put it is that there is no typical day at work. Every day is different with various opportunities. 
Management takes great care of their employees and ensures all accommodations are taken care of.

I was able to learn many skills and opportunities while working with OPS. It helped me get out my comfort zone and experience a real work environment. I enjoyed talking and interacting with my colleges/ other police officers. Very fun but demanding and required hard work.

CHALLENGING BUT REWARDING. Good support from supervisors.Training students is rewarding. Working patrol challenges your emotional stability. Healthy diet is challenging.

You can only apply when you're 15-18 years old but it helps you grow, helps you build connections, and interact with your community more. You learn a lot about the police system and get special demonstrations of facilities. You also get free first aid training.

Amazing life opportunity to grow and give back to community.
Training is thorough and ongoing. There is opportunity to branch into areas that are of interest to you after spending years in the general field.
