they don't stock your pools with proper equipment, and gaslight you when you have an issue. they under-train you but expect the most. more like a janitorial/maintenance job.  if you have NL and SFA cert or more, youre too qualified for this job. there isn't even pool training to verify your skills. you would be better off applying to work somewhere else. to all of you out there, you are LIFEGUARDS not JANITORS. my first and only day, I was tossed into a pool on my own, and was expected to maintain it, when i was only given an hour of training prior to my first shift. The stress that was sprung upon me was detrimental to my mental state. This is a whole water system we're talking about. I wasn't given anything that they said they would provide- sanitary wipes, gloves, etc. No instructions for anything. no coworkers to ask for help, no supervisor or manager in sight. Youre on your own, with barely any training. This place doesn't care about keeping people safe, they just care about the number in their bank accounts. A manager gaslighted and swore at me when I pointed out my negative experience and issues i had about the pool, which is highly unprofessional and just further proves that they don't care what happens in their facilities. I am a person who takes my job seriously, and when i see how operations go against my any codes of conduct, I have to resign. I will not work for a company that doesn't care about their conduct, their employees, and other people's lives. It is their job to make sure that you have everything you need in order to operate a pool and guard effectively, not yours. had an emergency happened, i would not have been able to successfully take control of the situation, as i had not been properly equipped with the following: gloves, CPR mask, First Aid Kit, AED, (functional) spinal board, etc. before you apply here, please take this raw review into extreme consideration. this company is terrible to work for. this is not my first job either. i thought my first job wasnt my cup of tea, however, i have now discovered another flavour that i highly despise. the way management treats you when you have a problem is highly unprofessional, disrespectful, and shows that they really dont care about employee satisfaction.

For a summer job, this is a great start to a lifeguarding career. My experience with PPL was a mix of good and bad. I'll start off with the good - they have a flexible schedule (if you are are working part-time) and they give clear instructions before you work to download a "work app" - helps whenever you clock into work and for picking up a shift. A lot of the hours are rather long, but then again great to make easy money for the day. I've worked there for nearly a year but only in the summer. The lifeguards I've worked with are rather friendly and can be great company for a rather long day of guarding the pool. My advice if you do plan to work there - only asks for shifts that are three guarded or two, that way you won't be completely alone during a shift. The bad - never work full time for PPL. I repeat NEVER work full time for PPL. As soon as you work full time for them the management they will overwhelm you with shifts. They don't only overwhelm you with the shifts but they also give you shifts to places far from where you live. I had one of the management once who gave me a shift in Toronto and Etobicoke. I specifically told them I can't go further than Burlington since I live in Oakville and I don't have my G2. They still gave the shifts even though I couldn't take it. The management threatened to fire me because I could not go to the shift they located me to. They told me if I don't go to the next shift which was still too far away from my location they would fire me. I would use a bus but it takes about 2 hours to get to those locations from where I live. Who would want to travel that long to get to work and then get back from a tiresome shift? And then there is uber which cost about nearly $50 dollars to get there. From the salary we are getting which is the minimum of $14 dollars an hour - that's like 3.5 hours worth of a shift. To be completely honest I've met a lot of great people - kids, parents, and lifeguards. I've never would have thought enjoyed working for a job that I could sit in the sun for the whole day. It's terrific! But if I have to change something it's the management. I've spoken to a lot of lifeguards and their concerns are with the people running the schedules. It's really frustrating to be working for a great job that is run by people that can't even handle their own employees properly.

Many of the contracts this company holds are horrible places to work at. they are unsanitary, dangerous, and do not meet the Ministry of Ontario Employment Standards. If they do then they are barely meeting the standards. 

They will send out mass emails to their employees threating them that they will deduct pay for unreasonable things such as not calling the office while you have already clocked into your shift with a GPS tracking app. 

they will also deny you a real break if you are working as a recreation coordinator, they stated to me that I had to stay on-site after I had already been working for 5 hours into an 8-hour shift.  

Scheduling management is very stressful to deal with. If you set your availability as being able to work any day, sometimes they will put you on a shift without asking you first, and then when you find out and can't work the shift they will say if you don't show we will terminate you. 

Caution to anyone applying for a job in this company. DO NOT APPLY!!

They sent me to a brampton location when I live in mississauga (after i applied for a mississauga position) which is a 2hr commute from my house and when I asked to switch, management didn't respond. The pools are unequipped and in sketchy neighbourhoods and you can't easily drop any shifts (you'll get about 30 shift drop request emails a day, probably 10 of which actually get accepted). I wanted to quit after a week and they withheld my pay (I lost around $210). There are constant phone calls daily where managers ask you to take open shifts on your days off (the reason it's so easy to get the job is because no one ever returns). To the young naive kids that apply every year; my 1 advice: DO NOT HESITATE TO TELL THEM YOU REFUSE TO WORK AT A POOL THAT IS UNEQUIPPED. The liability will fall on you if anything happens so hold them to their responsibilities and BE ASSERTIVE or they will walk all over you.

Overall PPL is a great place to work. Honestly, if you are an unmotivated teenager working two months of the year as a lifeguard, no job will be 100% perfect. But I can guarantee you PPL is a bigger company and a BETTER PLACE TO WORK than superior, livnorth, jadaco, pro recreation, or any of your other options in the GTA.

If you play by the rules and you do your job well, you get recognized in this company. After two months of summer guarding I was promoted to recreation coordinator and by January I became an instructor making $18/hr. If you are willing to really apply yourself to the job and do your work well, you can go pretty far within the company. Tips: listen to management, don't expect long weekends off, and stay off your phone while guarding.

PPL was a company I started to work for after graduation. It was a great starting job, with a great management team, benefits and amazing atmosphere. I worked full time in a very independent role as a recreation coordinator. I had a full week of training where I thoroughly learned how to complete pool maintenance and chemical checks, along with completing administrative work for residents. 
PPL has lots of locations where you can work, and there is possibility to be placed in an area of your convenience! The company was really accommodating to my schedule and was able to schedule hours based around things that came up! 
On top of this, I spent most of my day interacting with many different types of people which made the job really awesome!

DO not work here if you are looking for managers who can communicate and act like mature adults.

Multiple times I was told to do something that goes against health regulations, and was threatened when I refused this work

Was threatened to be fired without pay when i could not make a shift because of a family emergency.

Management acts like children and has not a shred of respect for their employees. Any concern was met with texts and emails from management with the maturity and respectfulness of a middle school  bully.

Many things were promised in the interview that were never carried out, and I was gaslight when I brought them up.

Management encourages the compromise of user and employee safety to make their work easier.

Avoid working here.

If you are in need of money fast this company is desperate. They will hire you quickly and give you many hours, however it is slow and painful days with no support and horrible mean management.

If you make the mistake of working with this company and then decide to quit DO NOT WORRY! It absolutely doesn't matter whether your contract states they can deduct money for no notice.. THEY CANT! it is ILLEGAL for them to withhold your pay in Ontario. 

Respond to them that you have confirmed with the ministry of labour and an employment lawyer that they can not withhold your pay as it is illegal. 

Do NOT let them manipulate you.. this company is clearly in desperate need of money because they feel the urge to scam young people out of their hard earned and well deserved pay...

A typical day as a recreation coordinator begins with prioritizing the bookings for a given day and organizing them into today's bookings or future bookings folders. Afterwards, you ensure that the pool chemicals are at an acceptable range, and that residents coming into the facility are in fact residents and have a valid club ID card on them at all times.

The management team at Absolute is terrific, offering constant support and mentorship to the staff. It helps to cultivate a a strong team environment that is both productive and fun to be apart of.

Overall, this was a good summer job. A typical day at work would involve daily pool maintenance and then lifeguarding for a couple hours at a time. The management team is very young and inexperienced and can expect too much from their employees. The hardest part of the job was the pool maintenance, as it turns out the state of the pool is heavily dependent on the location of the pool. Weather, construction zones and residents can make or break the pool.  Another hard part of the job was being expected to work alone. The employer hires inexperienced lifeguards but has them working alone after one 2 hour training session. The most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with people everyday. Lifeguarding can be pretty boring without social interaction.
