The management team is absolutely horrible. They do not give any feedback on your nursing until you are being told you are in trouble (there is no ongoing postive or negative feedback). During the pandemic, communication was very poor, some families would be made aware their units were on outbreak before the nurses. The only resource for mental health for staff is FSEAP. Quite often you will be assigned to one unit, only to have them change your assignment to a new unit that you have never been on, with no additional training provided. There has been an increase in PSW shortages, therefore sometimes as an RPN you will get pulled to be a PSW. Management has poor communication skills and almost every colleague I have worked with can give you an anecdote of how they were mistreated/harassed by management and have experienced extreme unprofessionally. There is an ethical committee for the facility however all staff is too scared of management to raise any moral or ethical concerns. If you are a new nurse, highly do not recommend working here as buddy shifts are limited, and we are often short-staffed. The pay is relatively good, so if you are willing to work under certain conditions (the nursing aspect of the position is fairly predictable and steady) then it would be a good fit for you. I would say overall I do not feel respected or valued at my workplace and am actively looking for other nursing opportunities. I just wanted to give an honest review, any nursing staff working there will state the same. 

A typical day at my previous job was working with a great team for most part but having to rush in the mornings to get our residents ready for breakfast was a challenge. Not enough time or help to get all the residence ready, and so unfair for them.

 When I decided to go into Nursing I was so excited, I actually thought I would have a lot more time with them (Residents). I enjoyed our talks and the many stories they love to tell, Unfortunately "time" was always a issue and we would always cut our stories short. I promise myself that I would always treat my residents as I would expect to be treated and would NEVER tolerate other co-workers bad behavior/abuse. And I'm proud to say that I kept my promise.

 If I learnt anything from my Nursing career was that life is short and our elderly are so precious and deserve nothing but the best care available out there. Our day will come and I pray that I will receive the same care as I was able to give. I've come to also realize that EVERY job has the typical people who are there for the pay and those of us who are there for the residents.

 The management team for most part was excellent with a few who would do better elsewhere. The hardest part of my job was not being able to do more for them (residents) and some of the useless rules that come with Nursing. My mother use to always tell me that your just one person and can't change the world on your own, do what you can for them while your there is all you can do.

 The most enjoyable part of my job was the Residents, knowing at the end of my day I made someone life a little happier, or made them smile or laugh or just a simple hug was so rewarding to me.

I cant believe im still working here. It amazes me that i'm still able to drag myself into this place. It will seem like a great job at first but the longer your here the most obvious it becomes that it is infact a toxic workplace. Don't get me wrong...the care from the staff members to resident is amazing. The staff truly truly care about the residents. It's the management and staff towards each other; im convinced people only come to work to make other people's lives miserable. It's an ongoing problem that new staff are looked down upon instead of being welcomed with open arms. (no wonder we can barely keep any new staff and were so short staffed during the pandemic). The management especially housekeeping is terribly run, the staff look so burnt out and overworked. The amount of turn around with PSW's here is wild. I'm always seeing new faces because it seems like everyone tries it and then leaves. One thing you should know about such a large facility like this is the gossip. Doesn't matter what department your in, there is always gossip going around. If your going to last here, keep your head down, don't bother trying to make friends, do your work and go home. 

When I applied here I was told I would be on a unit that I have been waiting for 3 months to have ONE shift on.... I am STILL waiting. If you applied for a position and don't like it, the opportunity to find a new unit is impossible. There is never any open positions for anyone... they say all the time we are short staffed...well open your eyes! Many people don't even show up for 90% of their shifts yet they still work here meanwhile some of us are struggling to find a new position.... ridiculous, I was told this was an amazing place to work, yes it is... if you want to get thrown around everywhere like a darn rag doll... Some workers are rude as he'll and management just shrugs it off like a fly on food... 

Management complains about staff being burnt out.... yeah, we are! I have been here for three months and this place has exhausted me more than any job I've ever had... the pay is not enough for how much we work and how hard!

Whom ever controls all this needs to grow up and open their eyes! I have always enjoyed taking care of others and always will but a lot of these staff just wear you down. 

Aren't we a team? .... no I don't think we are.... 90% of the time you're one for all.... 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Ones you are unionized at the Perley, you can't get into management post, seems like it is their policy.  Not just that, they make you feel incompetent when you apply for a management post, this happened to many entry level staffs who wants to upgrade theur career in the food and nutrition department. I got hired at hospital in management team and they appreciate my ability to manage the department. If you are planning to build your career in food and nutrition department after completion of your course then this is not the right place for you. You go in as a dietary aide and will come out as a dietary aide!

Huge gap between entry level staff and the management!

Lots of resources are available for staff development and supervisory staff are always approachable and willing to listen to any concerns

Working on a unit where the nursing staff is not in tandem with each other

We have a diverse community so you get to interact with various different backgrounds and appreciate the value of each other

Getting reports, then doing a round to check on each resident, passing snacks, care needs, shower, setting up for meals

What is the best part of working at the company?
The job itself wasn’t bad, it was pretty repetitive. The staff was okay and would sometimes help, but upper management needs to work on their people skill. I only recommend working here for 1 year, then leave as fast as you can.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management and labour tasks. You need to be fast, or you’ll be behind on your work. Especially if you work two units, which can be impossible for some people who have injuries and limited abilities. Staff is alright but can be gossipy when they are ready. It makes the work environment difficult.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy and stressful. Fun when with other staff members.

There's some great people that work here on the front lines ( psws,nurses, support staff),along with volunteers but that's where it ends. Supervisors are always snopping around criticizing your work and treating you like a child. It's extremely challenging to get vacation requests approved and you feel like your constantly being overworked.  The Perley is a very top heavy organization, it's disgusting how many executive assistants and big wigs are collecting big salaries annually while the people doing the heavy lifting get screwed. The parking rates are ridiculous considering it's only long term care, so your almost paying 100$ a month for parking.

Extremely gossipy and toxic workplace culture. Very cliquey. Upper management knows about toxic supervisors and allows it to continue. No area for growth.  The only good thing is the frontline staff that you work with that truly care about the residents (nursing, housekeeping, F&N).  High turn over rate. Management will often decline vacation requests. Complaints have gone through regarding toxix leaders, however nothing has been done. Do not work here. Your mental health will be affected.
