Popeyes Restaurants

I worked in Brampton at mavis & derry and the manager there did not know how to manage, he did not record my hours, he did not remember when i came in and when i went out or the days he called me. I didnt receive my pay till 1.5 MONTHS even though everyone got their pays bi weekly and in the end i was blamed for it as i did not keep reminding him to pay me since hes a 'busy' manager. I gave them all my availability and they didn't call me, although they hired me for the availability i gave them. Other 'favorites' were being called 6 to 7 days a week and being paid overtime and I was sitting at home calling everyday to ask for work. On ONE specific day when i couldnt make it to work on a 1 hour notice (that happened  because i was looking for other jobs since i wasn't being called here) so the manager went like "oh when we call you, you arent available and then you want us to call you for work!?" - Well, dude ur only calling me when someones absent from their shift otherwise you dont call me at all, you don't answer my calls, messages or voice mails. You totally ignore me. I can't sit forever at home waiting for you to call me can I. I'm didn't apply to be a filler for others. I have a life too, and I need a job to support myself, my family and be independent. I was so excited and thrilled to work with Popeyes as i love to eat there but now I feel terrible. No body listened to my complaints and he was the manager and he did whatever he wanted and in the end he said he doesn't need me since hes not satisfied with my work speed. How can you expect me to work at the speed of light when you call me once in two weeks?. Practice makes a man perfect. Once i cut my hand while washing the dishes and told the manager and he said, oh forget about it, you dont know ive been through worse times man, its just a cut, wash the dishes do them fast we have to close by this time - Excuse me what? Is that a good enough reason to leave my hand cut and still expect me to wash all the dishes in the hot soapy water. 
I really needed a job and so I worked till I could but then things got really bad. My self respect was destroyed with the racism and favoritism there. And the worst part was, I couldn't do anything.

My location had everyone's training shift a day before we opened the store, meaning we had to become competent workers within a 4-hour shift a day before an extremely busy opening day. There were very nice co-workers in the first few weeks of working there but all the good employees quit for easier jobs with better pay. The main issue I have with the job is the management mentality of doing everything really quick, which don't get me wrong is perfectly good in a fast-paced environment to better serve customers, but when they ask you to do a 30-minute task in 10 minutes just so they can send you home early without having to pay you it gets old quick. The worst example of this was when they told me to do dishes and would periodically come to the back to tell me to go faster, expecting me to clean 15+ large metal trays and lids that are used to store raw chicken in 10 minutes, and ignoring my insistence on cleaning dishes thoroughly. The absolute worst thing about the job is they forced every employee to complete 10+ hours of online training with only an hour of it paid. So when I say that it is too much work for minimum wage, expect to work really quick to be sent home early, do tedious amounts of online training, and clean the bathrooms regularly, all for what should be an average fast-food job.
 
The most enjoyable part of the job is probably interacting with customers because I actually take pride in the quality of the food and it was nice making sure customers enjoyed their food,  the managers left you alone in the lobby.

Small nitpicks:
-took two-weeks to put doorknobs on the employee bathroom
-no lockers, so your valuables aren't safe
-Very small employee break room, literally just a small chair beside the storage racks and bathroom, so most people have to pile their bags and coats in a huge pile on the table that is usually being used to store extra store supplies.

Popeyes kitchen is the worst place to work. The managers were rude and manipulative towards the employees, forcing extra hours, making us feel bad for turning down an extra shift even though the store is already overstraffed, insensitive to employee privacy and actually made one employee cry about a health issue she had that was untreatable. The managers also yelled and fought with eachother very often, in a different language and would go on for hours. Often, the would end up storming out, leaving the employees by themselves. They were never flexible about hours. No matter how far in advanced the request was, and even if we already had someone willing to take the shift, they would not change the schedule because “they put effort and time into the schedules they make and shouldn’t need to worry about what we want”. After Ontario’s minimum wage went up to $14.00/hour, they didn’t not change the pay for many months, when we addressed it. All they said was that they forgot to change it, meaning all employees lost a lot of money because all five managers, “forgot”. The managers also forced us to work when we were sick even if we had someone to cover, which violates health and safety codes. The only good thing about working at Popeyes was the free food, only if you were the cook, because the managers refused to let anybody cook food for cashiers, who were not allowed to learn to cook, meaning that often, cashiers had almost nothing to eat at all.

The owner I was with lazily made out schedules and forget days we booked off or wouldn't care about what we had to do outside of our job. I made it clear I needed day shifts because I do fashion design and film acting as careers along with working there and she told me it was no problem. Eventually she started overloading me with hours I didn't ask for or schedule me on days that conflicted with my artist job. On top of that she did not pay us proper over-time which I should as is COMPLETELY illegal. She basically wanted me to make her restaurant my top priority in life and nothing else. I asked for one important weekend off and she basically told me I owe her for letting me have the weekend off. I gave her two months notice and she made it like I caused her a giant inconvenience. Of course this doesn't affect my over all opinion on the whole franchise but I feel like the franchise should really be careful of who they choose to sign onto a franchise contract. That owner was one of the most tyrannical people I've ever met.

I worked here for about a year and the only good thing about this place was the boss who was nice to me. Other than that I worked with a crazy staff with a lot of drama, very fast paced and stressful place to work. Always understaffed with usually two cashiers and one cook who have to take care of the whole restaurant. While Other restaurants have more cooks at the back for a faster and a less stressful experience. My Job was overburdening where i had to mop, broom, wash dishes, clean the whole kitchen area, throw garbage away, stock every food item up, make chicken, make batter, season the chicken, and constantly drop food for hours with no end in sight. It was too hot, greasy and disgusting. Don’t forget the burn marks I got from all that oil splashing at me.... Employees will treat you like s**t and expect you to be at your best even if you’re dying at the back or the front. You get no discounts when you’re off or when you’re at a different location. After the restaurant closes at 10PM I never got paid a single penny paid even if I stayed there till 11PM. There is no hour punch in system where you get paid as come in and as go. Thank the universe that I left this place a while ago and I imagine it to be much worse now. Overall I do not recommend anybody working here.

The management at these restaurants are atrocious. You are not given the hours you are promised, shifts are taken away and added at the last minute, you are expected to stay longer than your scheduled shift... many times i was scheduled until 11 pm and was given a guilt trip into staying until 1 or 2 am to do jobs that were not my responsibility, and then was expected to be back the next morning and do it all over again, might i add i was not paid for this extra time. I talked to the management several times about increasing my hours, since in my interview i mentioned i needed full time and i was promised these hours, and they told me they had so much staff so they had to cut peoples hours... in the same day they hired 2 new people. The management also does not stand up for their staff when they are being screamed at by customers. I recall a time where a customer was yelling and getting increasingly angry... even to the point where he was about to become violent... and the manager didn’t do anything to help. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is... it is not a good place to work, especially if you are trying to support yourself, as i was. 

My hours at Popeye's were very flexible. I worked Monday- Friday 5pm-11pm. I was a cashier. I provided customers with quick and accurate service and during closing time, I was responsible for general cleaning. I worked at a multicultural based workplace, we managed to respect one other's differences. There was hardly any conflicts between co-workers. I enjoyed going to work everyday because of my co-workers. The management was not demanding at all, they were always open and engaging with staff. I learned how difficult it was working a customer service job. You encounter different people everyday, some having bad days more than others, but the important thing is to treat each customer with the respect they deserve. I also learned that teamwork is an important aspect when it comes to fast food restaurants. One minor negative thing one can do, can set back the rest of the team. It's all about working together to succeed. Every Sunday, an employee would bring in their own cultural food for co-workers to try, I would say that was the most enjoyable part of the job, trying different foods and building relationships with co-workers.

when I worked at the Orangeville location there was no acting managers on shift, when the supervisor was there she treated every employee like they were less than human, always demanded you do thing but did actually nothing herself.  she spent many hours sitting in the office texting and very little time on the floor, when something happened involving a customer she knew nothing about it even though she was only six feet away sitting at the desk.  the restaurant was shabby and never properly cleaned.  there was inadequate staff to deal with customer volume so customers eventually just stopped coming in, ice machine was not working for weeks at a time. when the customers did come in they regularly had to wait for long periods of time for chicken to be prepared as there was never any ready and waiting, yet they claimed their motto was chicken with change which meant your food was ready for you when they were handing you your change.  the majority of the employees are barely able to speak English and see unable to understand it as well, as a result the orders were regularly misunderstood. they do not offer free lunches but you do get 50% off.

Popeyes in Lindsay has a great team who look out for eachother and pick up the slack when people are lacking. The job itself wasnt overly stressful, not counting for the occasional customer or rush, and I enjoyed my time at work. Though, this is after getting used to the pace of the job, which was difficult due to their poor training. Training itself is unpaid, which wouldn't be as much as a problem if it was actual training. Basically you just shadow the employees, and try to help where you can, but theres no formal training. Months after I started working there I was still learning how to do things just because they diddnt come up in the first few days of working there. You do eventually learn how to do things on your own, but does make the few first shifts very stressful. 

Overall, if you can handle a learn as you go, fast paced job, this is perfect. Once you understand how to actually do the job it becomes easy, it just whether or not you can keep up.

A typical day at work for me was to first punch in. Then I would stay at the cash register and take orders. I would also package the orders and I would restock anything that was running out. I would go in the back and make all of the sides such as mashed potatoes, coleslaw, etc. If the dishes were piling up and there were no customers, I would wash the dishes to make work easier during closing time. I would also go in the office and manage and record any expenses we had. Once a week I would call our suppliers and place orders for any stock that we needed. I would also total the cash for the day at closing time. I loved my staff. I got along with them well and together we made every working moment fun. The hardest part of the job was to clean during closing. It would take long and was very tiring but it always got completed. The best part of my job was being the cashier. I loved taking orders and putting smiles on the faces of the customers. I enjoyed interacting with them a lot.
