Pratt & Whitney

-Rats in the office.
-Took over a month to get internet access. Onboarding was completed within two months. 
-Culture is very old school, everyone there has been working for 10-30 years and they live in a bubble.
-Management is unbelievably ignorant. They will not stand up for you, it seems they just care about pleasing the execs (c-suites)--or possibly protecting their bonus. Design engineer do no receive a bonus, or stock options. Managers are typically in useless meetings all day so they don't really have time to discuss things with team members or do any actual design work. Don't expect mentorship. 
-Team lunches are paid, but you have to make up the time (they don't consider it team building).
-Work pace is extremely slow.
-Insane amount of bureaucracy.
-The amount of design you do is laughable. I honestly learned more about engineering from smaller companies than at this place.
-Design engineers are seen as Project Managers coordinating the whole project. Project Engineers just deal with the clients and say yes or no to a design decision (you don't get the final decision as a Design Engineer). 
-Most of my work was creating PPT slides of possible design ideas, no one wants to reinvent the wheel so most of your ideas will get shot down.
-Most of the work involving design is just opening up clearances, redefining profiles, and drawing tolerances. 
-Good opportunity for new grads (because of the name, the actual work you do is mostly admin and coordination), but if you have a lot of engineering experience and want to build cool things and innovate, this is not the company for you. 
-Benefits are deducted from your salary, and they are very basic (80/20 coverage) 25k basic life insurance (anything more you'd get deducted an extra $50 per paycheque). 

Conclusion: PW&C is a legacy company, and I honestly believe they are just too big to fail (although I believe they deserve to fail, most of the work being done is not value added). The work is extremely slow, you will spend hours just uploading documents, researching past memos,  working on PLM. If you get lucky to work on a new engine model you may be able to create some cool stuff but I believe it will take YEARS to get to this stage-- and even then, the  culture is they don't like to reinvent the wheel. 

The amount of bureaucracy in this place will make you hate engineering. You will spend 98% of your time staring at a screen, as a design engineer you hardly get to have hands on experience with the things you are working on. 

The company is very cheap, the office equipment is so old it feels like you are back in the 70s-80s. Carpets are dirty and smell like wet furniture, if you can, try to get an in person interview so you can get a look around the office, and you will know immediately how dated the equipment is for the engineering teams.  

Micromanagers are very present in the design teams, so fair warning. 

They are currently trying to get everyone back into the office, so if you are looking for a place with hybrid work culture in the long term, you might be disappointed. 

This company has a lot of potential to do really cool things, but sadly the culture in the office really limits you to pushing boundaries. You will really question how much engineering you are actually doing. You will spend a majority of your time on legacy software, and on PLM uploading and researching past memos to see what the history is on a part. Design solutions are very basic and do not give you the feeling that you contributed anything (anyone can suggest opening up clearances, and redefining drawings).  

If you are a talented engineer, do no work here-- you will get bored. If you're burned out and want a chill job with job security, then this may be good for you (as long as you can deal with micromanagers).

 If you are starting out in engineering take the opportunity to get this on your resume and after a few years leave. You will likely get to do the low level admin work at first, but you may get opportunities to learn more about the engines as you progress. Most people won't spend a lot of time teaching you things about the engines, but you will have a lot of time to research on your own (remember things are very slow here). 


Pratt & Whitney Canada (PWC) was a very good company to work for over 40 years. Opportunities for growth & advancement are also very good. Benefits are good, probably as good as most big companies today, but are considerably reduced compared to those long-term employees had. Continuing education support is available. All employee’s are required to take specified ethics & procedural training courses each year. Senior Management are very strong in communicating with the employees. The integrity & ethics of PWC & their parent companies are industry leading.
Field Support Managers (FSM) are a unique role (~100 positions worldwide in a 10k employee company). The job is typically remotely located & requires direct on-site field support to aircraft customers & OEM's in a given geographical region. FSM's are typically selected based on extensive internal company experience (normally in field related, Customer Support roles) in some cases experienced Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, may be locally hired. You are essentially an ambassador maintaining a relationship between the customers & the company. Routine visits to customers, with written reports of interactions are required, as is as required after hours 24/7 AOG (Aircraft On Ground) support. Essentially, whilst you are part of a team plus you have to be able to work completely independently within your region, so you are very much responsible for time management & ensuring that all goals are achieved. Every day is different depending on what issues arise. One day you could be doing routine visits, the next assisting an aircraft OEM with a troubleshooting issue, the next writing reports & communicating to all other company areas. You have considerable close proximity with the customers end products & ensuring that the company's products continue to allow the customers business to operate without interruption. Normally you get to be involved in the entire issue resolution process. This was an extremely satisfying job from a job satisfaction perspective. It was never one of those "Oh no, I have to work today" jobs. 


- Prepare and analyze indirect tax returns, reconcile multiple tax accounts, ensuring the compliance with regulatory requirements and internal controls (for example: GST/HST & QST, T4A-NR, NR4, T106 & Transfer pricing documentation, Excise Tax on insurance purchased outside Canada)
- Be responsible for the audits and queries conducted by tax authorities, both Canadian and international 
- Prepare and analyze corporation tax returns of various company members in the corporate group
- Participate in the calculations of tax provisions of various company members in the corporate group, contributing to forecast, budget and tax planning
- Prepare and analyze foreign reporting packages and information returns, ensuring that foreign tax credits and the amounts of income or expense are in line with the associated corporation tax returns
- Perform tax research on tax implication of ongoing projects in both Canadian and international perspective


During contractor period, you will be exploited...Some departments are more chaotic than others.
There could be a sense of family - but be careful, they expect lots of devotion (meaning countless hours) and no training ever,

During permanency period, you have more perks...They claim you have a higher salary than the industry (which is not always true and on top if you go outside the industry you will see that you do not need to wait one year for retirment perks (other companies offer them since day 1)....Again everything depends on the management-director team, some will break you, some can help shape you

Overall it can be a good entry place, but be aware of their exploitative tendencies, protect your boundaries, and apply elsewhere. Do not at all stay there by loyalty!

Working at PW&C has many benefits. Policies in place support working from home and as well as a few "flexible work arrangement" options that can help with work/life balance. They have flexible dental and benefit plans. The vacation allotment is 3 week for the first 5 years, 4 weeks at your 10 year anniversary and 5 weeks at 15 years.

There are new and interesting challenges on a weekly basis that call for creative problem solving. The environment in Operations is very fast paced and dynamic. There are always challenges facing the delivery of engines to customers on time and to spec.

The culture is one of respect and mutual support. There is not much tolerance for gossip and negativity.

At Pratt & Whitney, a typical day involved structured training, safety-focused work, and learning aerospace assembly standards. I learned the importance of precision, documentation, teamwork, and following procedures exactly. Management and senior employees were supportive and professional, especially during onboarding. The workplace culture felt disciplined but welcoming, with a strong focus on quality and accountability. The hardest part was adapting to the high standards and detailed processes expected in aerospace manufacturing. The most enjoyable part was being surrounded by aircraft engines, learning from experienced technicians, and feeling like I was contributing to real aviation work.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Close to home. Conveniently located.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Having to learn the different programs and they're not user friendly.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Clickish and somewhat toxic.  The supervisor is hardly around and relies on the heresay of  co- workers. So, if they don't like you  they can sau whatever they want against you to get you fired.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You put on special shoes and goggles to enter the work area. You sit inside a cubicle surrounded by metal (airplane parts), do entries, shipout parts,  collect data regarding different parts of different engines, you eat ion your desk, etc.

Last worked there as a co-op student back in 2013. So this review might be outdated. But what a fantastic place to start an engieering career. They were heavily organized, well managed, and exercised lots of "best practices". Of course, there was also some great exposure to some serious engineering considering what they make. Very collegial atmosphere with great mentors and training. From what I gathered, at the time, full timers would get straightforward salaries, vacation, benefits. A lot of lifers.

PWC is a great place to gain essential skills in today's workforce as they provide free ongoing online courses on skills development and industry government standards as well as Health & Safety standards. Unfortunately due to the numerous job cuts over the last 5 years and no permanent replacements in the budget for the near future, it should be regarded as a good place to start or refresh your career. Not necessarily a stable enough environment for a life-long career. At least not for the next 5-10 years.

Good pay as long as it lasts. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Egregious management. Not to be trusted. Several long term employees I have known have been unjustly terminated. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It has changed over the years. There was a time when they were considered the “employer of choice”, sadly that is no longer the case. In fact, it is completely the opposite. Years ago a new General Manager changed all that, too bad really. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Constantly looking over your shoulder, not a good environment at all.
