Radius Recycling

My main task was to ensure business processes were in place to use SAI as the ERP system. That meant learning the business and system we were migrating to, but had no documentation or any foreknowledge of what the new system was like. It was a culture shift for the employees as Schnitzer (large corporation) had just moved into Canada(a bunch of small companies). My main task was to prepare the employees and make sure the business did not shut down when the system went live. The people from head office were great. The project went fairly smoothly.

Then Schnitzer expanded further into Canada, and I had to be able to travel with less than a day's notice to meet the new employees and train and have them up and running even if the ERP system was not in place. I found myself travelling, sometimes 3 weeks of the month with only 1 or 2 day's notice of where I should be. Most times, I felt I did not have enough time to properly train most people.

Schnitzer is a good company to work for. They strive to have great ethics and they treated me very well. However, the business is mapped very closely to the commodities market and when the US economy is poor, so is the business. I saw the stock price drop 40% in a 1 month period and when that happens, the company needs to do drastic things like layoffs with little notice. They seemed to have to do that often.

Terrible environment with no sense of progress with any task assigned. Management could care less about actual training or proper delegation of tasks to workers.

On the first day the supervisor for where I was working could barely explain what my general duties were or what the position's work would entail. Safety is supposedly a top priority yet the equipment was run down and in terrible condition.

Only by chance on the second shift worked I was informed to be careful with extracting lithium-ion batteries from scrap equipment as they have a chance to explode if you do not remove them carefully (after I was trained to break open the same scrap with a hammer to access said batteries).

Every employee gave a completely different set of guidelines in training and I was often sent to work on things in which I barely had a clue on how to do. The main reason they try to emphasize on safety is because the environment is prone to injury and they only want to cover themselves from risk with WorkSafe. 

For about a third of the days worked there was at least 2 people waiting around doing nothing with sometimes as much as 5 people that have nothing to do due to poor management of workers.

I was hired at the beginning of the pandemic and had 1 week of training. The remainder of the month I was left on my own with absolutely no help with regards to how the system worked. Fast paced and very unorganized. The management was horrible and no breaks whatsoever, had to try and eat at my desk with customers constantly coming through the door and vehicles on the scale. There is no light for the trucks and vehicles, had to give a "thumbs up". the computers were always failing and crashing. After 1.5 months I was laid off due to the virus and then brought back to try and pick up again with losing some of the knowledge from my training. After 3 weeks back, I was fired for really no apparent reason. I was told that I didn't fit in.  My work was completed in efficient and correct order. This company has essentially weak management and horrific company ethics for the position offered. I would not recommend any young woman or mature woman this job.  I am reporting my issues with the Labour board.

Constantly belittled by management over the radio. MGMT will tell you one thing and do another. Different privelegas giving to different people. MGMT will say no to something the literally do exactly the same thing if it's too their benefit. Instead of training and promoting the hard working guys that have been their for years they constantly hire someone new instead of training the guys who have put in the time for years. Expect lay offs twice a year minimum. Corporate beaucracy is what this company thrives on. Foreman and yard manager are high paid bullies

When I started working for Steel Pacific, before they were bought out by Schnitzer, I enjoyed what they stood for; "Keep It In Play". As an avid recycler, I loved the idea of re-selling good "junk", and recycling what was left. Now however, the model has been changed to crush everything and sell it as scrap, and other services like toilet and tire recycling have disappeared. The loss of the "Outdoor Hardware Store" was a bitter pill to chew for regulars of the last 50 years, and now it's just another Corporate metal crusher - hot, stinky, and streamlined.

My experience was altered with a specific Regional Manager who is no longer with the company.  However with the exception of that person, now removed from the company.  It was a great place to work.  They are a leader in Northern CA and the commercial team has tremendous experience and talent.  I spent a bit of time in Logistics, that wasn't what I wanted to do and eventually lead to me leaving.  But I would recommend the Commercial side of the Metals Business to anyone who knows the business.

nothing good about this place if you have PTSD they will set you up to have flashback so they can fire you

the long hour and high levels of mercury poisoning no coffee brakes

safety meetings that have nothing to do with your work

Responsible to ensure operations were ran effectively on a daily basis.  Inexperience in the scrap steel industry was working against me along with minimum supervision and coaching.  shortage of manpower and equipment did not allow our team to properly bid or complete a job in a timely manner which effected our ability to establish clientele.

During the interview they make it seem you will have a normal work schedule. As the company is very number driven you need to make up short coming even thoight you are short staffed. As a manager I knew on salary to work few extra hours would be normal but it became 10 hour days and 6 days a week and if you made any noise about proper compensation you would have your job threatened

Schnitzer steel is very nice company to work with, we have a code of conduct being practice by the employee that make the company world most Ethical but it doesnt happen to Pick N Pull barlow, the Store Manager dont know what is integrity and respect. He doesnt deal that to his employee and to Customer, customer who didnt sign the log book in going in is banned to enter the store premises.
