Real Canadian Superstore

Typically, you show up and immediately deal with carts. Thats pretty much your day, depending on the time your shift starts. Either you are doing carts, doing price checks or putting away returns/non-sellable items. The job is so easy you can put yourself on autopilot and just go about your day. There isn't really a learning curve, other than learning where things go and what isle everything is in or where you could find it. 

When you see the "Flexible scheduling" posting in a job offer, its because you will most likely be PT. They almost never high FT, and even people who have been there for years do not get 40 hours a week. As soon as you put any stipulation on your scheduling/availability, you get hit with "restricted", meaning you won't be scheduled for more than 20 hours a week, unless called in (and you are never guaranteed 20 hours a week either). Most times you will have a few 4-5 hour shifts. If you have anything less than Sun-Sat, all day availability, you are restricted. Even if you have all day availability, you still won't get FT hours. If you don't message or talk to a supervisor though about the day's you've said you can't work to get them changed and adjusted, you'll be expected to show up. 

Supervisors are usually pretty good. I never had issues talking to them. Higher ups though you usually have to talk to them face to face or send an email. Not a lot of supervision for the job means that once you know the job, you are expected to just keep yourself busy. Problem is you can sometimes fall behind with tasks cause you are answering price calls constantly. You usually get paired up for someone during a day shift, maybe a night shift and then you are basically on your own to figure the rest out. Coworkers were friendly and easy to get along with. Other than many people not really remembering who you are, other than the department you work in, you are pretty much alone.

Overall, if you have a PT job and looking to top off your hours, a student looking for some PT work, looking for work while seeking other employment, or a 16 year old looking for their first job, look no further. If you are expecting a "real" easy 40 hours a week, you best look elsewhere besides the "Real Canadian Superstore"

I started working for Real Canadian Superstore in High School and have kept the job over the years as both a primary and secondary job to help with income. I learned many skills that I didn't necessarily have as a teenager, and they developed as I took on more responsibility, had new job roles and when the company changed working procedures. I got to know my co-workers more and more and even built friendships at work and outside of work, creating a sense of family with them, and it made working there more enjoyable.

I took on more responsibility and I have worked in several different departments in many different roles over the past 14 years and learned a lot from working for the company, both good and bad. 

I would say my negatives to the job are the cuts to hours that are sometimes very unreasonable and make it so that employees have to either choose to work for them anytime available to get any hours or find further employment to be able to support themselves to live. The rate of pay is fair, but it has stopped since the minimum wage increase for a lot previously hired workers, which has caused a lot of strain on workers and frustrations. When good management changes over, and there is a lot of change over of supervisors and managers in every store, the good managers and supervisors don't seem to stick around very long until they are moved out with either completely new staff or with ones who disrupt the way things are run and want to change the way it is done to suit themselves instead of realizing what is working at the stores and departments and letting them continue on. It does cause a lot of tension and sometimes arguments between employees and management and even between management as well, which has a ripple effect in the stores. 

The positives of working for the company, if you complete their 6 months of probation, is the company discount card, work perks, part-time benefits which are covered under unions dues, full time- benefits covered by paid premiums, and the different activities and events that happen throughout the year at the stores or out in the community. Being unionized, there are lots of safeguards to your employment and you are protected at work from harassment of any kind, the threat of job loss, discrimination and unfair treatment. There is a sense of security in the job, and there are also lots of opportunities to advance both in the company and as well as union training as well.

A typical day at work:
I usually arrive very early at work.  If my manager is short of staff she usually ask me to start working right away, or I sit down in the staff room reading a book or watching TV until it is time to start work.
The first thing I usually do is to clean the convey belt then I turn on the light to show that my line is open for the costumers to come.
When the costumers arrive I greet them, ask them if they want to use bags, then I scan the items, ask them if they have a PC (President Choice) card and if they have I ask them if they want to use their points, or what kind of payment they are going to use.  After they make payment I gave them their receipt and say thank you.

What I learned:
I learn a lot about team work.  The store was bland new; all the staff had to learn together at the same time.  It was nice to see the team work that was demonstrated by the management and all the crew to make sure that everybody knew their parts and was able to be ready on the grand opening of the store.
The knowledge of different produces was amazing to me.  I was able to learn a lot of different ethnic produces that I would have never known if not for working at the Super Store.

Management:
As I mention before the management was so supportive to the staff and they worked hard to make sure that the learning transition was good to the staff before the opening of the store.  I was able to choose the time for the schedule that I wanted to work.

My co-workers:
All my co-workers that I was involved with in my department were very supportive.  The store was real big I cannot talk for all the workers.  Our department was called “Front End”.  And on the busy days we would have all lines occupied by the cashiers, so you always had another cashier in front of you or behind you that you could ask for quick help like a code number that you had forgotten or could not find in the book right away.  You also had a phone beside you which you can use to phone a supervisor or a price checker if you need any help.  There was also someone at the customer service who would be willingly to provide help to other cashiers.  So general speaking I had always had good relationship with my co workers.  

The Hardest part of the job:  
One of the hardest parts of the job was when someone spent a lot of money to qualify for a free item on the flyer and then they didn’t pick it up. Or when someone forgot groceries and you hoped they would come back and pick them up at the customer service desk.

The most enjoyable part of my job:
The most enjoyable part of my job was getting to know different people; my co - workers and the customers.  Also getting to be introduced to different kinds of produce by customers and sharing on how to eat or cook it.

I have worked as a personal shopper for just over a year now but I am going to give my 2 weeks notice as this last week has been the last straw for me. 

when you are hired for this job I wish I would of been told that I would have my shifts cancelled, have my manger calling and texting me and all hours of the day to ask if I can work on a day outside my availability or if I would be ok with making my shift shorter to 'save the department hours' like god I am not on call. I also wish they would have told me that I would never get my breaks which is illegal. 

This job it self is rough too since customers will be racist to you if you have an accent. there is also a lot of heavy lifting like literally you are expected to have to lift 40 pounds from over your head or lift cases of water that customers order. And you have to work outside in all types weather which is great. it went from being outside in 30 degree weather to working in rainstorms and even working in -40 degree Celsius weather at night which should be illegal. I got frostbite for the first time in my life from having to stay outside for 20 minutes when we had 10 customers show up at once and we had to keep running their orders outside to their cars. nothing beats having a customer tell you 'wow must suck working in this weather' as you are unloading their groceries into their trunk as they let their car run and you are getting lovely exhaust/gas in your face.

I was suppose to be fired this last week because apparently when you are rushed into surgery and miss work (even though you let your manager know ahead of time you are having unexpected surgery and wont make it into work and sent them proof) that since you're in the hospital it counts as a 'no show' but I was still scheduled for this following week and when I showed up for my shift some managers told me I would be fired because I missed 3 shifts but they changed their minds because I am a hard worker when I am there and said I could work there as long as I would never request any days off or call in sick ever again and wanted me to uncancel the days I had requested off in next month due to my university exams so I am going to do myself a favour and quit because now they want me to work on the days I have exams on and I won't be able to call in sick for it anymore anyways since if I do ill be fired anyways

I have been working as personal shoppers for 4 years since they do have this service launched. Their system is obviously sucks. Managers from head office even don't know what this service looks like in the reality as I guessed. There are always system issues which cause the picking problem. Everything ruined because of system error and it cuase delays of the picking, orders gets stuck in the system, customer complains, offer them vouchers. Ends up losing lots of money for the company. They do have lots of promotion to make people to use this service but they are making lots of problems and losing their money. I don't know why they have this bad service althought they are not ready for it. 
They will pay you the minimum wage to start. But to be honest, they have to pay more for this position. 
Collegues in the department have to deal with the customer directly without mangers sometimes so prepare yourself that you will get your feeling hurt from the angry cuatomers. 
Sometimes you need to prepare some tears because it will be really stressful to deal with the customers who are really angry and don't care what they are saying to you. 

Because we need to pick the orders on the floor, the customers shopping in the store ask lots of question about the location of the items, out of stock itemes etc which is extra work for us to deal with while we are picking the orders in the limited time. 

It is even more stressful when the orders gets delayed but still need to deal with the customer on the floor, too. 

This system issues never gets fixed properly. It was there when they first luanched this service and it is still there every time I work. 
Regular customers who has been using this service from the start knows if there is something happend and kindly understand. But don't expect this kind to the first time customer. They really get angry so much. I hope they don't come back for this service anymore. 

This problem is what we as personal shoppers have to deal with every day at work. If you think about this position, cashier will be better than this at least you can call to ask help to front end manager or assist manager who are always there. 

I really want  blame the people who develped and is managing the system for this department. They are not doing the right work and they will probably get paid even higher than us. 
So shame on you people. Your work is so sucks.

What is the best part of working at the company?

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day starts with preparing the deli station—making sure everything is clean, stocked, and ready for customers. I slice meats and cheeses to order, prepare sandwiches or hot foods, and help customers with their selections. Throughout the day, I keep the display cases fresh and organized, follow food safety standards, and rotate stock to ensure quality. There’s also a lot of teamwork involved, especially during busy times, and I make sure to keep a positive attitude while helping customers and staying efficient. It’s fast-paced, but I enjoy the routine and interacting with people.

A typical day at the Real Canadian Superstore would be the following:	
Receive payment by cash, check, credit cards, vouchers, or automatic debits.
Issue receipts, refunds, credits, or change due to customers.
Assist customers by providing information and resolving their complaints.
Count money in cash drawers at the beginning of shifts to ensure that amounts are correct and that there is adequate change.
Establish or identify prices of goods, services or admission, and tabulate bills using calculators, cash registers, or optical price scanners.
Greet customers entering establishments.
Answer customers' questions, and provide information on procedures or policies.
Sell tickets and other items to customers.
Calculate total payments received during a time period, and reconcile this with total sales.
Process merchandise returns and exchanges.
Monitor checkout stations to ensure that they have adequate cash available and that they are staffed appropriately.
Assist with duties in other areas of the store,bagging and carrying out customers' items to the shopping cart or getting assistance to carry items to the customers vehicle
Maintain clean and orderly checkout areas and complete other general cleaning duties, such as mopping floors and emptying trash cans.
Sort, count, and wrap currency and coins.
My favorite part of my job at the Real Canadian Superstore would be dealing with the public, I enjoy the interaction with customers as well as assisting them with inquiries from product suggestions and locations to personal conversations about the customers day, work, children etc.
I do not find any aspect of my job difficult in anyway
My co-workers at the establishment are terrific, we all work as a team, I can count on them to assist is there is an inquiry to a product, from codes to location in the store. As well as requiring the co-worker to authorize a code on the cash register. We all work together in harmony.

A typical work day would start of by me clocking in and heading down to my section where there is a list of tasks that needed to be completed by the end of my shift. I would start off by filling in the missing blanks in the shelves with older products upfront while putting the newer ones in the back. Some other tasks included cleaning up the aisles and helping customers find items they need or providing them with a personal opinion when it came to which item suits them best. 

I did not really learn much on this job as it was fairly easy and critical thinking was not required. As any other job, I appreciate the interactions with customers, as being a better speaker and fulfilling customer satisfaction are two areas that I strive to improve on. 

The management was nice. They always answered any questions I had and helped me get accustomed to being able to the job better and more efficiently. 

I was not there for too long to really figure out if there was or wasn't a workplace culture. It was more of a get in and get out type of job for most people I feel. The staff I was around were very nice so it did set a comfortable atmosphere where you can feel at ease and not stressed out about work.

The hardest part was memorizing where each food item was when it came to finding them for customers. I would constantly refer them to someone who had been there longer and knew the aisles better than I did. It didn't help that outside of the organic foods section, some organic food was placed in aisles I was not in charge of. It was a fairly simple job in terms of what I had to do, besides the memorization aspect. I would complete each task on the sheet and then rotate around helping customers and refilling any missing spots.

A typical day at Real Canadian Superstore would be that we would all get together and see what tasks are required of us while still being able to provide the friendliest customer service. We would have to unpack stock and when a customer needs help, we would have to put aside what we were doing and focus 100% on the customer. The managers had strict conduct but friendly, where tasks had to be completed on time, dress code, and cleanliness of the employees and the environment of the workplace. My co-workers were great, outgoing, and they made the workplace a fun place to be. Superstore is probably one of the most memorable places that I have worked at. This job opened me up into the corporate world when I was young and prepared me for future endeavours. The hardest part of this job was the amount of stock that came in everyday which had to be put out on shelves for the next day; with the entire rigorous work load we were given, I worked efficiently and it required me to be able to create new methods on the spot in order to be able to get work done faster. This developed our/my leadership and teamwork skills. At the end, this improved our friendship within the company and outside of the company as well. The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting all kinds of people within the company, and seeing the different cultures that were in the store (employees and customers). I enjoyed learning about the different cultures in my work environment where I learned to better communicate with individuals from different cultures.
