This place is a circus. No communication from the front office to the floor, disorganized management, poor quality, bad union, dirty place to work, old equipment that constantly breaks down, machines don’t get fixed properly, safety not a concern as long as you hit your part count for the day. 
This place is a unorganized mess that only cares about numbers. But numbers are almost impossible to get with how often machines are breaking down, then when a machine breaks down instead of taking the time to fix it maintenance is rushed to get the line running as soon as possible instead of allowing them to fix machines in the plant properly. 
Often times supervisors are left in the dark due to a lack of communication between supervisors and the front office. Also there never seems to be a plan to the day and it feels like the supervisors have no idea where the shift before them left off. For the most part it feels as if the people on the floor have a better idea as to what going on then the supervisors do. 
Then to top it off this is a very dirty place to work. No pride taken in the workplace. Almost everywhere you look is covered in grease. There are such poor cleaning practices in place where the workplace has no chance of ever being a clean workplace.
Overall this place is disorganized, dirty and trying to run on old machines. Stay as far away from this place as you can

I came to SAF as a co-op student and stayed for a little longer than a year before I got laid off. Throughout my time there I did learn a lot and I got to gain some valuable experience.  However, at a certain point you will hit a ceiling and your skills will not progress anymore because your not doing anything new or challenging which isn't bad if you want an easy job. 

The best part of working there are the people, I made lots of friends there and I still talk and see them fairly regularly. I learned the most from more experienced welders showing me their process of how to tackle specific jobs and those lessons will stick with me for a very long time. If you go to SAF with a learning mindset then you will definitely reap the benefits of that. 

Worst part is management for sure. It's difficult to keep the good supervisors and most of the bad ones get fired pretty quickly so its always a revolving door. 

Also, 

The Union isn't very strong so don't expect too much from them. The benefits and the pay scale aren't great either. I think it takes 4-5 years to get up to max rate and for a welder that's just north of $30/hr.

But again, if your just starting out or if you want an easy job, I would say this is a great place to be. 


This is a union job. Those in the union do whatever they like, they run the place. Management does absolutely nothing about harrassment, workplace violence or enforcing company policies. 
If you are female, don't bother applying. Your presence will cause drama. There are less then a handful of women working on the floor. People don't mind their own business and the employees are all miserable, they go out of their way to make you miserable too.
It's a very physical and dirty place to work. Straight shifts are good, pay is decent but the environment is very toxic. Employees are ignorant and will scream and yell at you. Very stressful. Who needs that garbage?

Not a horrible place to work. Some of the jobs are physically demanding but many are incredibly simple. The hours are reasonable with the option to work overtime during the week or on Saturdays. The shifts are only afternoons and midnights because most of the long time employees are on morning shift and refuse to switch. The worst part is probably the management. The supervisors like to compete with each other. They don't seem to have a good grasp on how to run the place and constantly make poor decisions when it comes to production. However, it is (for the most part) a fairly low stress job that allows you a small amount of freedom.

Deceitful company with a serious lack of morals! As with all companies they’re only interested in profit and their outdated systems are basic and don’t work in this day and age. Washrooms are disgusting as the people who work there don’t care much for their coworkers. All the staff are like zombies and fail to grasp basic conversation. Be aware that what they offer at an hourly rate for new employees is not what they advertise. $20.73 an hour is for night shift and includes the shift premium and is less for day shift. But they won’t tell you that until after you start working there. 

Horrible management and ignorant staff. I don’t recommend this company to anyone.

Many people were promised plenty of work and no lay offs when hired. These people left better paying jobs for false promises of a great company that is growing and no layoffs, to find out they are laid off before they even make it through their probation period. Management are lazy and if you have a problem you are told “it’s not my shift its not my problem “ or “you better figure it out on your own” If I can give any sort of recommendation it would be to stay far far away from this place  lied to from day one.

The best part about working at Saf is the variety of work and parts to machine on different machines.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Waiting for your first off from the quality control department 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
As long as you're doing your job it's good 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Usually nice and steady most of the time

There are many employee engagement activities, like fundraisers, giveaways, meals, etc.  Service awards for every 5 years of employment and you always get a gift and card on your birthday, something many places dont offer anymore.  Education reimbursement is available to advance if you want to, which is great.  Full time hours on fixed shifts. Comprehensive benefit package, RRSPs and competitive wage.  Lots of long-term employees, so that says alot.

Factory work they way it should be . You don't have supervisors breathing down your neck , as long as you produce a reasonable code, which you can even with one hand tied behind your back , company been here for long time , so there is stability , different products for trucking industry,  work is heavy , at times dirty depending where you work , but unlike other factories in the ariea you dont become a robot . 

Once your here you are stuck if you don't have a plan B, do not come here. This place has the most unorganized management you will ever encounter. They seem to only hire friends and family in management, it's really astonishing how inept the management is. People quit almost daily out of pure frustration. Go somewhere else, I work here now and am desperately looking for another job.
