Every so often when the Forman does not like what he has herd coming up from the floor he will have a 30+ minute speech about how everyone is expendable and you will be fired if you don't meet some demand of his or rule or regulation that he can not even preform. this happens 3 times ever 2 weeks on average.

Once the morning 'safety meeting' is over you are subjected to the logistical nightmare of how the shop is set up and its hierarchy.  Labourers having free range of the shop on where to put materials, fit components and finished components making delivery times to fitters and welders extremely long. The fitters fit up just enough material to maintain a 1-2 component ready for welding with no regard on how long it takes to weld said piece. For a shop that has 12 fitters and 11 welders one would think that the welders would be buried in work. This is not the case, each welder is averaging 120-140 single pass inches a day (40 true weld inches). 

With both these issues compiling on each other when a component is finished it not only takes quite a long time to get the component out of a welding bay it takes almost twice as long to get a new one in. This is where the problem for welders really lay. Because the lead hand has no idea about what is going on and is more concerned about talking to his friends about curry and cricket all he notices is the welders that are not interested in curry or cricket are not welding. Thus giving them trouble for not welding..... 

HR will never admit it but there is favouritism when hiring due to the fact that the hiring department is east indian and resumes get 'lost' on a weekly basis. At the time of my employment I told HR that i was in school for a career change and that the position i was looking for was one that they had open, once my schooling was completed and i applied for the job as a internal hire and the job was given to a east indian with less qualification and i was given the "your over qualified" speech. so i am still doing the job i went to school to get out of.

I worked there at the start of building the project as a B welder and from day one the place was in shambles. There was no tools or proper precedes on how to do things safely here in Canada. Everywhere I went on the job was rush rush rush to get things done but no tools or proper guidelines on how to do a job. When coming back on my 1st rotation I sat next to a accountant and found the reason why no tools cause they hadn't paid the supply bills. When coming back on my rotation I got my toolbox finally and set it up only to discover they started a night shift and needed all tools in including my welding helmet. I started to follow the proper procedures on welding with the same standards in the welding industry code book but I found it was broken way to often. They asked me to cut into a 3" pipe that was xrayed and hydrotested from the shop and I refused it cause I needed QA a procedure to do the job and they wouldn't or want to go to QA for this and it's supposed to b hush hush. Sry a foreign worker from poland who hadn't done his qualifying welds yet went and did the weld. This is not the only one of many weld procedure codes I witness that were broken and unsafe. 

As for the management I would say the draw back they have is there is no Canadian managers that know the codes and work safe practices.  I know the project is in operation already but I am really concerned about the quality of the work and their work practices to make the company's first show in oils and projects.

A place where respect for people and competence is ignored but favoritism and systemic bullying are fostered.  The culture has dwindled to that which keeps the most mediocre of leadership.  The hr department is among the least competent of any company that seems to employ only unqualified ex-starbucks employees and college professors who know nothing about the industry or practical hr practices in general.  Imagine being in an environment where hr has the authority to fire people without the consent of the department manager. 

If you look at the state of the company, it's obvious the mismanagement continues.  Any reasonable client with half a brain will avoid doing business with this company at all costs. 

Anyone who has left the company has moved on to better jobs in Canadian workplaces where good work is rewarded and people are given the respect they deserve. 

The one positive aspect is the worst people in the company are still employed there and are trapped in a job where they can't leave because the pay is too high; this ultimately benefits the entire industry because then they can't cause damage to other organizations.  It will be wonderful when the company finally leaves the country.

I started working for Saipem right after completing the Architectural Technology course. We worked 12 hour days for 21 days straight and then were flown home for 7 days. Although the days work long and the work was very repetitive, the job itself was very accommodating to our needs and allowed myself to see a larger portion of what the different positions that were needed to make our site come together and function. Co-workers were all very helpful when myself or someone else was stuck and we operated as a unit to accomplish a bigger goal than just the daily tasks we were given. Our workflow was constant but we supplied to client with the best product we could put together and were ultimately thanked and recognized as one of the strongest teams on the site. The best part of the job was learning new fields of work and being able to accomplish something as a team rather than as an individual.

we would set a goaled date to finish a job and if we needed to stay late to complete we would do that everyone worked safe and helpful in showing how things are done the hardest part of the job was if there was no job to be done we would just clean up which is no fun but has to be done what i have learned from this job was how to cut and shape a pice of pipe to fit as a show or dummyleg on a other pipe system learned alot about pump systems heating systems how to read blue prints what the height was what was needed before getting to the task at hand the most enjoyable part of the job i would have to say would be after finishing a big job and standing back and looking at what myself and the team have done knowing itll be there for a long time just taking pride in the work ive done on any job with this trade would be the most enjoyable part

Some difficulty working with temporary foreign workers as there is a communication barrier, although some do try very hard to overcome it. Lack of proper tools make it difficult to complete tasks, but not impossible. Great people to work with, some of the most responsible management personnel I have ever had the pleasure of working with, although like every other work place, there are individuals who make it more difficult then it needs to be. As a new comer to the oil patch, I was welcomed very warmly, and found that everyone was more then helpful in my orientation, and that the company was very good for the progression of my career. I would recommend them as an employer when oil prices recover, which is why I rated job security low as it is completely dependent on a fluctuating market.

Great place to learn and to work. A company based on highly technical, very serious on safety management. Workload challenging in the field as well a lot of fun in the corporate office. Follow up is killing. An unnecessary number of employments caused a financial burden as well as no body's job. Initial investment in short time and without proper survey as an international company in the Canadian business culture. A lot of mismanagement with the middle managers, either inexperience to work in the Canadian culture, or because of the standard.  Flip flop HR department another big blow to general employees. A company is a good place for serious and knowledgeable employees.

A typical day of work would be to first receive your job scope from your direct foreman.  Then you will plan your work and gather materials as a crew (team).  Always keeping safety in mind and a clean organized work area, you would erect the scaffold that is assigned to your specific crew.  Saipem was my very first scaffolding job and I learned everything a beginner should learn because I had very good teachers.  Management were good but I think a lot could of been improved upon to make for a much more sustainable and enjoyable environment.  I really enjoyed working at Husky Sunrise because it broadened my horizons and I met a lot of very interesting and good hearted people.  The hardest part of the Job would probably be enduring the extreme weather conditions because 90% of a scaffolder's job is outside.

Morning Safety meetings, morning stretching and warm-up exercises before actual work commences. Split up into designated crews and completion of all paper work, permits, pre-inspection of tools, equipment and mobiles, A.W.P's and Company Trucks. I'm usually paired with more experienced Ironworkers, Journeymans and discuss tasks at hand. Sign out required tools and fall-protection gear. Assist Crane Operators as they set up their Cranes and outriggers. other tasks include loading/unloading steel units, bolten up with temporary bolts, rigging, depending on the project. I love the workplace culture and learn as much as possible. Hardest part of the job is working in -35 to -40 cold tempatures. Most enjoyable part of the job is getting the job done efficiently and maintaining safety is a number one priority.
