The work is very easy for what the starting wage is. Lots of walking and bending. Can be smelly, but luckily you rarely have to work directly with excrement. For the most part you work by yourself assigned to a ward or two, so you can work at your own pace. You are expected to finish a checklist and audits do happen, so you do need to have good time skills. Extremely repetitive; boring. Thankfully management doesn't seem to mind housekeepers to have one earbud in, so if you love podcasts or listening to music while you work your days will fly by.

Always short staffed due to being understaffed (apparently it's always been like that), so you're often given extra duties. Starting as a 'casual' you can basically expect near full time hours; albeit to do that you need to give them full availability and you will work very sporadically. However the great part about being casual apposed to FT is that you have full control of your schedule and can refuse any shifts with due notice.

An interesting take away from working at the SMHC is that it's eye opening and humbling to the realities of mental health, and has made me want to be a better advocate for it. It's also partly why I left. It can be a very depressing environment, for many reasons. But it is also a good place, it exists for good reasons, so don't let the sad aspects discourage you too much.

As a mobile driver (Service worker), my duties were simple: transfer patients/staff/ materials/documents to the different buildings/facilities. However, there is a person always disrespectful to coworkers no matter inside the department or outside the department, Irritable and quick to take offence at petty things. The person frequent yelling to others via radio, phone...entire centre knows about, but management has no action, that's why they're always hiring new people and quit after few weeks and hiring and quit. I can not believe that mental health centre have a mental problem worker,  and  provide services to its patients.
Besides this, coworkers from other departments are very friendly, approachable.

If your thinking about working there you might wanna rethink it. Coworkers are nothing but backstabbers they are nice to your face the minute you turn around they are talking smack about you behind your back . As for management they don’t care about there employees. And you always get mandated.
And as for ward managers they are the worst they don’t care about there staff and don’t even get the time to know you you’ll be lucky if they remember your name. And as for majority of the nurses they treat the patient like dogs . I wouldn’t recommend anyone work at Smhc.

As an experienced nurse I was under utilized there, but it was an on call relief position. Work roles were fixed and unchanging. Very institutionalized.
Staff education was good especially Mental Health First Aid and Trauma informed care as well as experiential exercises around understanding mental illness.
The institution itself was oppressive in the rigidity of the routines and the lack of stimulation in the environments.

I had bad experiences with supervisors and co-workers, who didn't know how to do their jobs properly. Any concerns I had, I felt weren't being heard by management.  At the end, I was fired/resigned, it took forever to receive 
money owed to me. It was getting to be such a toxic environment, I was so glad to leave, although I loved working with my patients.  It was like I was the only one who followed the rules and it was sickening.

Staff is generally good to you if you’re a good worker. A bit of drama from time to time like any workplace. Lots of overtime if you like double pay. Managers some micromanage to the point everyone hates them. Other managers well most managers don’t have a clue what the policies are or amendments by unions and will definitely try to over step so make sure you’re well versed in what your rights are or get to know a couple senior employees who will point you in the right direction in standing upto them!

No real support from management

Bad negative energy all the time sick calls and nothing ever happens to the ones that abuse it

Tired and hungry staff negative attitude

Horrible place to work. Horrible pay. Horrible, horrible management. Want be treated with no respect and get extra work put on you? And have no say in jobs or processes that clearly affect you. Want to hate the field you went to school for? Then work here. 
A place to treat mental health and yet they don’t care about their workers. 
Any place is better than this. Trust me. 

Oh I miss working I made may great friends. Work was great I enjoyed my job. My sons father moved from Manitoba to Ontario and I felt it was important for my son to have his father in his life so I moved now I need a job.

As an SMHC support service worker, you are in the housekeeping and dietary department. Your job is busy every day and it never gets boring. It's a great place to work, as everyone helps each other and your supervisors are supportive and flexible.
