It is my responsibility to teach from both textbook and Powerpoint slides and provide the exams for each class.

What I learned is that I love to teach and that I can make a connection with students and even show them that I care and believe in them when they don't believe in themselves. Giving a student who is struggling the ability to meet with you and help this also provides them with hope that they can meet the expectations of post-secondary education.

Management was fine.  They provided the trust in you to complete the job effectively and were always open to setting up a meeting to speak with you.

Workplace culture is very different since it is an educational institution.  I kept to myself pretty much as I did not know a lot of staff.  I met staff along the way and was able to connect over lunch or coffee but class time and structure creates the inability sometimes to be able to share in meetings or even a coffee.People were friendly and were always willing to help you if you had a question or connection with the proper person to help answer your question.

The hardest part of the job was preparing the tests as I would have to prepare different sets so that persons beside each other were not getting the same number to do the test together or falsify their answers.

The most difficult part of the job is working with a student who believes that a grade was unjust or explaining to them the consequences of plagiarism and the effects to damaging their school transcript.

As a mature student employed as a Student Mentor, it wasn't difficult for me to take on most mentees with a nurturing spirit. For those mentees that fell into my 'same' age range, I was happy to aid in listening, empowering and providing the same strategies I had to implement to become a successful student, while balancing my family and professional life. However, with this said, I felt and witnessed on many occasions that my employer, the same that educated me, failed to respect my prevalent role in life....that of a mother, and therefore I found my own common sense approach to some student's behavior was derailed and nullified for the sake of the employed status I held. I was a successful mentor, currently still providing private services since the Mentor Programme was cancelled after it's first year - pilot initiative. The majority of students I mentored were those women within my age range, which kept me quite busy and still does.

Delivering various communications-based courses at St. Clair College has afforded me the opportunity to work creatively and interact with my students in ways that have enhanced our academic experience.

While I do adhere to course objectives, management has allowed me considerable latitude regarding the ways I choose to deliver the required material. I believe that the confidence displayed in my abilities and judgement allow me to enjoy my job and be more productive.

Each course requires a thorough review of objectives, the collection of appropriate teaching materials (both required as well as supplementary) preparation of a weekly lesson plan.

When I first started working there they provided atrociously bad training which is virtually non-existent on a very extremely outdated computer system! They have extremely high numbers of part-time workers and extremely high numbers of international students numbering over 70% for part-time workers and over 40% for international students. Very focused on building white elephant buildings like new stadiums and esports complex but they should be focusing on good student and staff experience. What I am saying is just about everything with them is a charade. There is also no pandemic if Canada use the terrain model in healthcare which they don't but they love the germ model because they get to prescribe perpetual pills doctor visits and endless spending for healthcare which they never have a solution for! The downtown so-called campus is constantly staffed with police which makes it extremely uneasy!

When I wasn't creating outlines for certain divisions of camp (etc. Art ages 6 and under etc.) I was answering phones, and organizing which family would be doing which programs. I also took care of the finance and helped families that needed financial aid for the camp. I became familiar with photocopying, faxing, answering phones in a professional manner, and having face to face conversations. 

My coworkers were very genuine people who were very enthusiastic and inspiring about kids and the camp we provided. Management was also very kind and very approachable. 

The hardest part of the job was having to say 'No' to certain families either because financial aid had dismissed them, or that their kids couldn't fit in the programs they wanted to go in because they were full. The mot enjoyable part of the job was creating the outlines for certain age groups. You got to shine a little and feel proud when the kids really enjoyed what they were doing.

Going into the college , prepare for classes and instruct the students and afterwards look over assignments and tests and grade the students on blackboard, socialize with students and fellow employees

During my time at St. Clair, I found that tasks and expectations were not well-defined. I was ordered to do things that were not in my initial job description, then reprimanded for doing additional work. When I asked for clarification regarding my job duties, management was very unhelpful. The management structure is very rigid and there is a lot of in-fighting between departments. There is also a high level of favouritism. Overall, I found the work culture in my department to be very toxic. Most of my colleagues in my department were looking to leave the organization or transfer to another department. Your work experience here is highly dependent on who your manager will be. While some departments are certainly better than others, I would not wish my worst enemy to be treated the way I was here.

There’s a time that I thought the college was a great employer. It is clear now that they are a good and fair employer only when there is money coming in.  I have observed them treat long time employees poorly, not caring about the impacts that a job loss would have on their lives.  Management has over the last couple years, made some deplorable decisions when it comes to the health and well-being of employees.  From what I can see, the management team is still taken care of and no overwhelming concessions of the made.  Probably one of the worst employers in the province at this point. 

I love working at St Clair and enjoy watching the students succeed. The co-workers are great and are quite helpful. It is a great job; however, the chance of getting hired full time is very unlikely.  There does appear to be a lot of nepotism in the hiring process. You are paid only for your class time but should expect to do an extensive amount of unpaid work, including, but not limited to: course delivery preparation, marking, and completing all courses, tasks, and seminars that St. Clair requires you to do on your own time. There is absolutely no guarantee of teaching hours and contracts are only per semester.
