I wish I could say better things about working here, but my experience at this branch will not warrant that. Although the compensation was great and I loved the work and the overall company, I found the middle management at this branch was the worst I’d ever encountered. I found office practices to be highly unprofessional and tasks were constantly changing with little to no direction. I was constantly pulled off tasks to complete  additional random tasks then judged harshly for not completing the original tasks. The scope of the role was constantly being redefined with tasks both changing or being added daily.  Suggestions for positive change were ignored or unappreciated. If you are used to a large company with contemporary and professional
corporate culture and clearly defined roles and tasks, you might find working here challenging. I found this branch of the company to have great potential, but has a long way to go to reach it. I found the office culture in my section to be very outdated and toxic. Very stressful environment. Each team member in my section broke down in tears at some point. Hopefully the culture has improved because this branch has the potential to be a great place to work if you can survive the growing pains. Sadly, I did not. It’s too bad - I really liked the work I was originally hired for before all the toxic chaos.

Working at Star Building has definitely been the highest point compared to prior employers in the same industry that i have worked for. The store and administrative staff alone have over 700+ years of service with Star and I know that there are lots of yard staff and drivers who can boast the same amount of years.

Every month we have a random draw, we have done baskets of chocolate around Easter all the way up to apple watches around Christmas. 1$ per entry and after the draw is finished they donate the money to charity, again this takes place every month.

Management are all class acts and understand real life, no matter the issue I am always met with understanding and open doors to figure a situation out. I truly feel the best way to enjoy your job and give your best effort is with praise where praise is do and in my years of being employed I have never once been yelled at or put down for a mistake that I have made but asked to take it as a lesson learned and "don't beat yourself up over it" attitude.

Amazing staff, awesome benefits/perks and great management make this an easy 5 stars.

Management is easily the worst i have experienced, any work you do will go unnoticed. Management would rather get on its loyal employees to pick up the slack than hire new employees or pay their current staff properly. There is little to no job security or position advancement. The supervisor in the Customer Service yard is the worst supervisor I’ve encountered, and often times is forgotten about due to his lack working or simply not being around. The job itself isn’t the worst, it’s the management that makes it unbearable at STAR.

They always pay on time every 2 weeks

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
dealing with management, and started working at 5am is really hard.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
there are opportunities for all nationalities, and they have social events a few times during summertime. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
all days are the same, routine,do your job and go home .no changes on your position same salary doing the same over and over again.

I do not recommend working here. In orientation, they boast about being all about work/life balance, and yet they pay you out for your vacation, but dont pay you enough in order to afford a vacation, let alone afford to take time off. 

The company made a record $150 million dollar profit last year, but won't pay their employees a liveable wage. In Calgary, the entire company is moving north of the city, where it is inaccessible by city transit, but doesn't pay its employees enough to live, let alone afford a vehicle to get back and forth to work. 

Great job with a real sense of family in the workplace. Everybody is Kind and understanding alot more so then you should Expect from construction, Management I'd amazing and constantly working with employees on a personal level and look out for each individual best interests. You will not find a better job in this Industry.

Management only thought of themselves not their staff.

Toxic management and backstabbing no thought about staff upper management.

Hopefully to get thru a day without dealing with management

Star Building Materials Winnipeg is a very good local company. Star has made many improvements to the facility to better service the customers and to make it a better place to work for the outside staff. Ongoing improvements will continue to make things even better. There is a team environment at Star and great support from all departments. Star promotes from within which creates a solid team environment. Overall a great place to work and very stable.

Absolutely horrible company to work for.  They expect you to work beyond expectations, long hours, horrible management and toxic environment. Most of all upper management who don’t give any thought of who you are and think of you as people who are easily replaced!  Huge workload for minimal pay -  over worked and underpaid. They expect you to work overtime without paying you and colleagues are very rude and overall culture is very bad.


To many hours expected of you,and no grace for mistakes . If you enjoy working outside (as i do ) , its great . Lots to learn if you have not worked flat beds . Mostly the drivers and yard crew are ok , management would happy if you as a driver could stay as a driver because there is a turn-over, last i saw . The equipment is functional , but you have to compromise to stay satisfied . Over all maybe a 3.5 of 5 in general .
