STARS Air Ambulance

STARS does incredible work and it was an honour to serve there. There are challenges with management in the organization, but that's everywhere and overall it can be a very meaningful place to work.

Working on any of the operational teams (aviation, clinical, ELC) requires a strong teamwork orientation, willingness to do long hours and shift work, and good interpersonal communication. 



This organization has highly trained air medical crew who are good at what they do. Sadly the organization is run by poor leaders and is very top heavy in this leadership. The leaders lack the skills and education to lead this organization. Failed paramedics have been promoted to director positions and lack the ability to think or make decisions. Nepotism is alive and well in this organization. The CEO is a puppet, who is more of a cheerleader than a leader. Most employees leave this organization under negative circumstances.

My daily work involved motivating and maintaining a team of representatives, and handling the monies raised and stock. We used a variety of fundraising techniques including residential and commercial door-to-door canvassing, kiosk sales, and trade shows.
I loved working there, but with a 2 year old child, I must stick closer to home, and look for a new place to finish my career.

Working for STARS was fun but the organization and expectation of employees needs to be adjusted. Management style is quite hands off but the manager in Finance does not have any background in IT or project management. Unrealistic timeline makes it extremely hard to plan out the project. No regular database analyst for the Finance department to ask questions. Overall, it was not an ideal work place for database professionals.

STARS Air Ambulance is a great place to work. Management is responsive, there is communication between departments, they encourage staff to make improvements (and if it's a good improvement they keep it in place), and the work is incredibly rewarding. 

Over the past 2 years there have been changes in STARS management that has improved the work place very much. They have the right people in the right places, and those people do good work.

It’s a great opportunity to treat and transport the most sick and injured Manitobans in the province. The team of nurse and paramedic is pretty amazing and the pilots are first class! Plus the helicopter doesn’t get off the ground without amazing engineers.

The rescue team does a fantastic job, but some of the management staff are quite overpaid for a supposed non for profit organization.  Quite a non professional back office.

When we worked in teams it went well, always had a meeting before and after a shift.
Got to work all over Alberta, which was a plus.

I have worked here for almost 10 years and have seen a big improvement in culture and senior leadership. The CEO is a breath of fresh air, though a change in some executive would go a long way. it’s a great place to work for operations and no shortage of challenging work for office stuff.
