On a regular day at work I engage with many customers and co-workers. As a Deli Clerk, a large portion of the environment is based on the emotions of the customers and the employees. Because this job requires a large scale of customer service, it is very important that the employees do not make a customer feel unhappy or mistreat a customer. I have learned how to properly approach customers and make sure their experience was positive by thanking them for their service and to have a good day. This allows the customer to feel welcomed and appreciated, which will most likely result in them returning. I have also learned how to properly label and handle chemichals and the tools used in the workplace. Preventing any accidents and illnesses are very important therefore proper care is vital in this type of work. The hardest part about my job is dealing with unhappy co-workers and management. often times, the rules are changed and minipulated based on who it is reguarding, finding it unequal and discriminant. Dealing with co-workers who bring their personal problems to work is also another issue that I find at my current job.

Working at Starsky is a real meritocracy: you get what you put in. For those who work hard, show up for shifts and have a good attitude, you will get respect, raises and promotions. If you are lazy and a have a bad attitude, you probably won't like it here. 

The staff is bright and helpful, there's a really great atmosphere of teamwork and camaraderie- most stay for years. With so many repeat customers, there's a family feel that's very warm and comfortable, I enjoy coming to work everyday and most of my co-workers feel the same. 

Starsky is one of the few grocery stores that hires full time and are very good with vacation time and trying to find a job that is a good fit for the individual.

I've learned a lot at Starsky and have been given the opportunity to be creative and thoughtful on a daily basis. THere are always new challenges and always people to help when the challenges may seem too much. 

Managers really care about the store and the staff. They are hands on, approachable and know every in and out of their respective departments.

I've been at Starsky 4 years and see myself there for many more.

The job was simple, would not recommend full time there is no room for advancement, noticed the management would favour employees that spoke polish, and you could only obtain a customer service position if you did. the breaks were short to minimal, 15 minute breaks was not allowed to take a full 30 minutes, they would schedule you to work 7h45m so they wouldn't have to give you another break. you had to punch in and out for breaks and while starting your shift. if you were 1 minute late your pay was docked 15 minutes. the machine to punch in hours didn't even work half the time you would spend 5 minutes just trying to punch in and your pay was docked management did not care they did what they could to intimidate you into believing they were doing you a favour by docking your pay. was not consistent, some could do things without consequence while others couldn't. full time workers hated the job and part time workers did not seem to mind.

my  shifts were either morning to afternoon or afternoon to closing.
the shifts changed every week, we had 1 or 2 15 min break, depending how long your shift is.
maintained a cleaned a cash made sure the money is safe.
i enjoyed working with the managers and my co workers i made many new friends. the costumers were most of the time friendly. 
i learned how to be more talkative i used to be very shy.
i also trained my memory of remembering most of the codes and learned how to be faster and multitask. lastly i learned how to deal with rude costumers on rare occasions. my managers were all caring and very helpful. my coworkers were very helpful and friendly especially when there was someone new on the team. 
the hardest part of the job was to keep track of the money make sure i did not loose anything. 
most enjoyable part would be talking to costumers meeting new people.

Very very busy weekends with long shifts and only 15 minute breaks with no actual time to eat your food. Managers breathe down your neck for no reason. You could be doing your work and they would still find something negative to say to you. Our warehouse is detached from the store so we have to go outside in order to access it. This results in going out in very poor weather conditions (Snow, rain, etc) Coolers are always so messy, unorganized and dirty. Customers have no respect and some co workers do not either. Sometimes when they do not have enough people in other departments because they do not hire properly, they proceed to take people from different departments, specifically produce. In addition, you have no say, they just take you and you have to obey it.

The supervisors do not speak English, and you are discriminated against if you are not Polish; this is portrayed through the many primitive behaviours of the Polish supervisors and managers. 

You are basically interviewed and given a job the next day without having the chance to go through a real orientation training. Then, you are thrown into a job with very little training and with very high performance expectations which set you up for quick failure. 

The work hours are inconsistent; in one week you are scheduled for 35 hours and in the other for 20 hours which makes it very difficult to keep up with the bills. 

Overall, I would say this Company needs a definite improvement in their human resources practices and as a reminder to start really focusing on making employees happy rather than crucifying them for making small mistakes.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing to say specifically they are taking people as seasonal but letting us to do everything I was interviewed and appointed as grocery clerk did the same job only for 3 days.
After that they asked me collect baggies from outside.
Their employees doesn't smile with another colleagueas.
They giving opportunities only for some particular countries. I had a worst time with this company

Took me as grocery clerk and worked as grocery clerk only for 3 days after that they told me to collect baggie

There's no work environment to admire 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I started on Saturday to work

This was a bad experience for me. The managers did not account for the fact that I was a student and they didn't have flexible hours whatsoever. They will have their favourite workers who will be allowed to slack off and talk to others while leaving you more work. They are quick to yell and some hardly speak good English. You must be prepared to get attitude from many customers. It is the busiest and most stressful department in the store. You will get very tired on your feet. You will get thrown into the job and are expected to know everything with minimum training. I recommend you do not work here. If you are able to deal with ticked off customers, remember a lot of information, cut meat accurately, and handle unfair management then you could possibly withstand this job.

This was the most degrading job that I have ever worked. The supervisor and manager in the deli department are unprofessional and will cut your hours if they don't like you. There is micromanaging, gossip, no team work, and no support. If you are a few minutes late returning from your break, you will be spoken to like you aren't a human being. You will be reported to HR. This place doesn't treat their staff well at all. This was the most stressful place that I have ever worked at and I'm so glad I was finally able to find another job. DO NOT WORK HERE FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH. 

Supervisors need sensitivity training. 

I love to work in Starsky fine food the management is good and the salary is direct deposit into my account but it is not enough for my food industry level experienced .Good people .fast faced environment did not bothered me I had a good experienced with their system. Polish groceries store, and most of the workers ,sometimes it is hard to understand their language ,some costumer cannot speak English at all but still I called my other workers to translate into English so I can serve them .Good hours schedule at day time only, I have a good hours in a week even par-time position only ,easy to learn their system with good trainings. Flexible schedule .
