SUMMERVILLE FAMILY HEALTH TEAM

Things have changed for the better in the past few years in terms of the culture and atmosphere at Summerville.  While the pace is fast and the patient roster size keeps growing (without as much resource increases as one might hope; the MOH is ultimately responsible for overall budgetary/funding decisions), the staff size and diversity of positions has also slowly increased and it has become a much more positive place to work with more collaboration and the opportunity to have a voice.  Ongoing clinical learning through external professional development opportunities has been given a higher priority despite limited funding.  The hardest part of the job tends to be keeping up with the increasing demand for service and the complexity of the issues that patients are seeking support for, while community and hospital mental health services are also being narrowed to cope with the same increasing demands and limited funding.  There is no official funding for clinical supervision for mental health professionals, therefore, staff need to be comfortable working quite independently and in taking as much advantage of opportunities for peer consultation and professional development as possible.  The opportunity for true multidisciplinary work is good.

Summerville Family Health Team (the Mississauga location specifically) is a terrible & stressful place to work. All of their staff is overworked & underpaid. Their medical administration staff are top notch, but are very poorly treated and never given the credit and appreciation they deserve. 

Most of the physicians there are great, however there are a few who feel their admin staff are beneath them and speak down to them. If it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t even have a patient schedule! 

The office manager is a very cold hearted and uncaring individual. She has no empathy for her staff during hard times. This makes for a very depressed & negative environment. 

Do better!

Use as a stepping stone to another job.  Work very basic not challenging.  Lots of politics, favoritism and tension between doctors  and FHT.  Board, composed mainly of doctors who don't seem to care about any of it.

Pros
 - 9-5 type job 
-  rarely work more than 40 hrs aweek 
-  pension 
-  good place to start in order to be able to move on.

Cons
- office politics 
- lots of gossip at by everyone (including doctors & management) 
- no opportunity for advancement 
- favoritism - manager and ED have favorites.  
- very negative atmosphere due to tension between FHT and doctors
- Not a professionally challenging environment as doctors don't allow working to scope since they want to be able to bill extra.

•	Providing administrative support including drafting, general correspondence, preparing agendas and briefing packages 
•	Managing incoming communication with Managers office and interdisciplinary health professionals, scheduling appointments on electronic medical records database 
•	Assisting in orientation of new employees 
•	Developing MS PowerPoint presentations, finalizing MS Word documents and preparing 
MS Excel spreadsheets

The family health  team  has a good relationship with the trillium health partners hospital and good access to  their  specialists and tests. 

Too much staff turnover due to the way  executive director treats staff. Staff try their  best but limited by constant scrutiny, poor work life  balance and the worst  salary and benefits.  Ridiculous policy and procedures with no input  from staff. It's a shame that so many great people have come  and gone  and no one cares.

Very high staff turnover.  I have never seen this much turnover in any organization I have worked with.  Staff under constant scrutiny.  Poor work life balance, terrible benefits and salary.

This has created a negative work environment with a great disconnect between staff and management.

ED has unreasonable and unrealistic expectations.  Expects flexibility from staff, but doesn't provide it.

Colleagues were a pleasure to work with.

Good benefits and pension plan. Great colleagues. Management needs to rethink their leadership style. Strive to be an "employer of choice" not a dictatorship. Unfortunately, there is a history of Executive Directors who are not fit for the role. It is a pity as there are many wonderful professionals who won't stay if current ED's dictatorship continues.

I enjoyed my time at Summerville Family Health Team. I was able to learn lots of new skills that continue to aid me in my college co-op placement today. The staff were so pleasurable and kind as they taught me how to perform my duties. They also made sure to let me know that I could ask them anything if I was unsure about anything

Work was relatively easy, not too much micromanagement when it came to the actual work that is done, but they can be quite strict about clocking in and out. However, you are free to work form home in certain roles.

They are open to collaborative ideas and creativity. But budgets are often low so not much can be accomplished.

working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary health care team is a great opportunity. working in the family medicine teaching unit is a nice experience
