I have worked many years at Sunset Manor and my experience has been a great one! I have been there through some changes and I do believe they now have some great managers who are trying their best to make the Manor a great place for the residents to live and call their home, they are listening to their staff and are willing to make changes for it to be a better work environment! Yes there has been some ups and downs but that is everywhere. At least we are all working as a team to be a successful place to live and work! Our Diverse team consists of amazing Nurses, H.S.A, Housekeepers, Dietary, Maintenance, Program Support Service, Wellness Specialist, Behavioural Support, Nurse Practitioner, Managers and Administrative staff and I am so glad to be a part of it.

The job is straight forward and I loved the residents,however working with a few coworkers that made it un bearable ...bullies get overlooked even after taking concers to supervisor, managment,and union.
Nothing was done.it was more then just me dealing with same issues/same people.. And as soon  as you bring things up the supervisor  turns on you.
Rules don't apply to all staff. there is a lot of favoritism. One person has a ongoing injury and can still hold a job and the other is forces to quite.one makes a small mistake due to family issues going on and is disciplined severely and unfairly..
the supervisor was only there half the year, and put a coworker in charge who was the problem bully...
The pay is low for the work expected of you.raises are few and far between.... 1.5 years before a raise and only .15 cents . Benefits are not worth it....I could go on.

We do the same routine everyday, preparing and setting up for each meal. We serve the residents drinks, then food. Deliver trays to the bedrooms as well as serve in the dining area. I've learned about the concept of serving, how to communicate with seniors with Alzheimers. Also learned about time management which is the most crucial part of the job. Everything must be done in a timely manner. The difficult part of the job is the stress of being short staffed. One server has to do the job of two servers and it can be very strenuous. Also teamwork can be a challenge, striving for everyone to be on the same page. I most enjoy interacting and socializing with the seniors. I do enjoy and get along well with the rest of the kitchen staff. Our kitchen manager creates a positive atmosphere,  and makes time to interact with the cooks and servers.

What is the best part of working at the company?
My colleagues are more like family, the staff, both nurses and Psws are like friends, easy going environment, everyone is ready to share their knowledge with you. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Non, the have flexible shifts and you can always swap shifts with colleagues example, I don’t like working nights but I have colleagues who like night shift but have morning or evening, I can swap shifts. So, check what works for you to avoid stress.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Inclusive. Friendly environment, respectful.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You arrived at work, you get what went well , wrong and needs adjustment. You given your chores for the shift, time for your breaks and your partner. Stuff like that.

Lower paying than others jobs in the same industry; always blames the weak union for how bad the pay is. There is no room for advancement within the company. They would rather hire outside then promote from within. They show no interest in retaining those that have been there for years and know their jobs and the residents. Management is completely disorganized and cares more about their days off than the residents or employees. Due to staff turnover you are usually understaffed and under trained. If you really need a temporary job then its okay in a bad economy.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The seniors, I enjoy helping the seniors. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Top management does not listen when an employee brings a concern to them regarding a resident.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I stay because I like my shift and if I were to go somewhere else I would not have the shift I have. Over all, stressful.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working with a diverse group of individual can be trying. We are full out non-stop all day.

I was taking care of 43 clients, with medications, ointments, eye drops, insuline injections, glucose testing, catheter insertions, dressings, VS, colections of samples, transferin, bathing. It was a fast paced environment, working with the other health team members and the resident`s family. It was alo rewarding when the residents were happy and in good health.

This facility needs to be investigated from the servery, to all other departments. The department managers and supervisors make their own rules to fit their personal agendas. There is a lot of workplace harassment, backstabbing and the union is useless as they only take your dues and have no backbone. There should be cameras in this place to make sure the safety of the residents and staff.

Set tables serve meals and drinks, do dishes, do laundry, clean and sanitize kitchen areas. Meal prep, juice prep. Management was unorganized. I enjoyed the residents and there families, the meals were good. Hardest part of the job was being short staff, only working 3-7 hour shifts, and only being casual.

Excellant place to start for a first job, the co-workers are always co-operative and helpfull, the schedule remains the same for each shift and the pay is pretty good. Time management is very important in the kitchen, which is sometimes difficult to maintain on busier days, but otherwise it's a good place to be.
