If you are a welder looking for work, this is not the place. Tacking and tying rebar cages is not a young and ambitious welder's dream. 

But if you enjoy lude comedy antics in the workplace (like me), this may be your true calling. My coworkers were fun to work with, and I believe that kind of relationship-building can be absolutely invaluable to anyone in the working world. 

My shoulders may never fully repair from the physical labour but atleast the foundation of rebar, concrete,  and steel worker friendships will forever have structural integrity.  

i worked there for 45 years, had alot of ups and downs, to many azz kisser's.if you were friends with the white hats besides in the work place,you could get easier jobs,etc. after i retired, there was a thank you from couple office staff, that's about it, what peeves  me off, some people retire and the company gives them a little party with pizza, a can of pop, a couple gifts, and some gift cards for up to $ 400.00 and that was for some of the employees that had less than 30 years service when they retired, as for myself, never got a thing from them when i retired after 45 years, but i guess it just matters for some. the more you give of yourself to the company, it looks like the less it is appreciated. it's pretty sad when some workers work their azzes off while others don't do 3 hours work in a day and not a darn thing is done about it, what they need there is a foreman with a back bone.

Worked here for 2 years learning basically everything the shop had to offer. Was suddenly laid off along with atleast 30 other employees due to “construction” and was told we would be called back “soon” only for everyone  to be FIRED 2 days before Christmas… they said the lay off was due to construction but everybody knows it was because we were trying to unionize so they had to cut us in order to try and re build. Management here is an absolute joke. Pay is decent but not worth all the extra and unnecessary work they insist you do. 
Mandatory overtime Saturday shift  every 3 weeks is a blessing and a curse. 

I would give this company a zero if that was an option.

The two redeeming qualities of working at Salit was I really loved my job, my co-workers and my direct boss.  Otherwise this environment is toxic and management is unprofessional.  

Working for Salit has taught me a really valuable lesson that I don't want to work for a company that condones bullying and harassment; allows their workers to come to work stoned and or drunk and turn a blind eye.  A company that walks all over their employees. A company that doesn't mind when their employees have full out fist fights on the plant floor and they just get a slap on their wrists. A company that doesn't provide the proper tools to complete one's position.

Management and organization is a joke. Most of the people are decent to work with. Bowmanville location could use a union presence as employees have basically zero job security and are at the whims of the management who in my experience couldnt organize a game of bingo. HR department is also a joke. You cant get a straight answer out of ANYBODY about anything and trying to contact the HR department at head office is like pulling teeth, nobody responds to emails or phone calls.

I was genuinely excited to work here at first — the hours were consistent, and I appreciated going home every day. My fellow drivers were supportive, respectful, and created a good team atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for management. I experienced rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional behavior from leadership during my time here. It felt like employees were not valued, and communication was often dismissive and sarcastic. That’s ultimately why I chose to leave — no job is worth compromising your self-respect.

If the management approach improves, this place could be great. But until then, it's not a healthy environment to work in.

Your fellow employees, have built friendships with a few. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Having a superior looking over your shoulder, we all know our jobs.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
For the most part it's good. Almost feel like you're being harassed with your superior over your shoulder micro managing everyone.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It's fairly straight forward. All employees have their work stations and work to do.

45 years of employment with various companies and in various roles Salit Steel was by far the worse. Poor training. Incredibly disgusting management from trucking dispatch. Back stabbing. Zero support. Pathetic benefits. This is the company for you if you are on a work release program. They will throw you under the truck at every opportunity and destroy your cvor. This company still lives in the dark ages and everybody employed there have no other options. They are the text book standards for everything wrong with supporting their employees. Try it. You'll see. Trying to help.

A manager that does manage, does not how to talk, does not try to improve himself, is not open to feedback, considers anyone who disagree with him as being aggressive.
A company that changes process every month and expects to build good client relationships by creating exceptions for whoever yell the stronger or has the highest exec contact on speed dial.
It's a nightmare for admin workers on the scheduling department, long hours, needlessly stressful job, absolutely no recognition
HR refers to employees as bodies and always sides with management, lies to your face.


Salit Steel can be a good place to work if your supervisor likes you. If your supervisor doesn't like you, you will be persecuted and your job is always on the line.
Salit Steel very rarely shows appreciation for their workers. Pizza, or barbecues are very rare for the employees.
After working at Salit Steel for 16 years I thought I would try something else, and left on good terms. Things didn't work out and after a month and 10 days I returned. I lost all seniority and started as a new hire. I was then fired a month after starting, for no reason explained.
