i did my placement at Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities. My typical day at placement would arrive at the Centre at 9:30 am sit at the front where i would greet staff members, and clients entering the site. I was expected to connect those who needed resources throughout the city of Toronto ( particularly Scarborough). In the afternoons i would either work along side the Child and Youth Health Promotion Coordinator, or with the Coordinator for Action for Neighbourhood Change.

I learned how to do intake, brief counselling, how to engage with those who have mental health disabilities, how to book rooms, i learned about the priority neighbourhoods in Scarborough, I learned how to take minutes for meetings that occurred monthly, i learned how and what it takes to plan events and facilitate it.

My coworkers are all from a diverse background, and was so nice to learn about them, and they were always willing to help out when they could, to help me grow to become an effective Community Service Worker.

Hardest part of the job was being emotional over clients I personally, and the centre could not help at the time. I would leave placement thinking about them, and feeling as if there was something more I could of done for them.

Enjoyable part of the job was being able to be the lead tutor for the homework club that Action for Neighbourhood Change ran in the Eglinton Avenue East/Kennedy Park area. It brought great joy to me that i was able to give back to the community and help children with their homework, and get to interact with their parents weekly.

Never felt more betrayed by a healthcare organization than here. Had to provide my own PPE during the early days of the pandemic as we were denied eye protection. Didn’t ask patients to wear masks until *after* the city of Toronto required them, despite staff asking for it. Felt ridiculed for voicing my concerns about running group programming for the elderly during a pandemic. 

Outside the pandemic, so much money is wasted here because management creates too many rules and bureaucracy in how care can be provided. 

Claims to be anti-oppressive but provides no training to staff on LGBTQ+ or POC topics. Claims to be harm reduction, but provides little education to staff about that so people do not feel comfortable accessing services. Received a naloxone/harm reduction training workshop that contained inaccurate information and was apparent the facilitator needed more education on the subject. 

A shame as this organization is well positioned to help people in this community. 

Horrible place to work.  Management is Horrible and don't appreciate loyalty at all.  I was let go for no reason after 6 years of working hard and with exceptional performance reviews.  In fact no reason could be provided for my abrupt dismissal.  In fact I had a case to take them to court for wrongful dismissal but didn't have enough money to fight this case.  The CEO IS one of the biggest problems in this company.  Instead of doing good for the community including seniors in need this organization is solely focused on politics and keeping only those that the CEO wants.  It's not worth joining this organization unless you want the unnecessary stress.  I've been asked by several of my team members to come back but I refused knowing that the management teams are not loyal.  The worst is that they not only treat their independent contractors poorly but the same goes with how they treat their employees that have been working there for over 20 years and I had to witness this several times before I was abruptly dismissed. 

Provide IT Support in the corporate office and other locations in person, via phone, and electronically via remote login.
Assist colleagues in using Microsoft apps like Outlook and Adobe.
Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, or other network and system. problems, and replace defective components when necessary.
Image and setup PC’s for new employees.
Maintain computer networks and related computing environments including computer. hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
Add new users and perform changes to user accounts in Active Directory.
Manages ticketing system.

after school on wednesdays I would catch the bus and go to Scarborough village where the tutoring took place. I would walk in and sit at a table. In a few minutes my students would arrive and show e the homework they needed help. When they did not have homework i would print out a worksheet. If they finished the work i would do riddles with them in order to keep their morale up so that they  enjoyed the experience. when the 1 and a half ours was up I would clean up the space with the other workers and then go home.

each day is a typical day because I am committed

Working there was a very good experience. Overall I learned how to be more social to others. The management was very welcoming and so were my co-workers. The hardest part of the job was dealing with some people that just did not want to cooperate with instructions. The most enjoyable part was to work with others that were in my age group.

It was such a great experience in making every child lives a difference. Seeing them grow and change as a individual. It was so rewarding to see them enjoying their lives and learn how to build relationships with other and their family.

Community-oriented and focused on providing care for sensitive groups on individuals. Very adamant on ensuring the fulfillment of individual client needs. Objective accomplished through extreme attention to details and open-mindedness.
