I was very exited when I started even though I was suggested not to start there. In the very beginning I could notice how management treats employees like trash and there is zero empathy or compassion towards clients. First week I was there, the very first thing clients said was "please we don´t want any more changes with employees; it is very hard on us". 
Don´t expect to be treated with a minimum of respect here. No wonder why the turn over rate in this place is so high.
If you try to make the place grow, have any expectations of professional development, if you have ideas, if you care about clients, if you want to bring more clients to the center and help them feel safe and supported, if you want a conversation with management about why they don´t let you develop any of your ideas you will get fired with no explanations whatsoever. They won´t even let you talk with the clients about why you are leaving the place.
And the saddest part of this, is that the clients are the ones who end up suffering and nobody there seemed to care.

As  a former employee who worked in the organization for 6 years my experience was very positive. The tenants, opportunities for professional growth, and responsive management influenced my decision to stay with the organization .
The management provides fair and professional references for staff seeking new opportunities or advancing education. The experience I gained working with the organization has been transferable and recognized by organizations and educational institutions I have worked with after leaving the organization.
There is a significant amount of downtime, which can be utilized to build relationships with tenants, and complete professional development courses. 
It is a great place for practicum students or new graduates seeking work experience in mental health. 


I have worked for the SSA for 6 years now and couldn't picture being anywhere else. I started with a smaller list of duties and as time went on was able to expand and build on my skills. Management is very understanding and even though it is a non-profit organization they still provide all staff with the opportunity for professional development. In my 6 years here I have learned so much and have grown as an individual. The clients are some of the best people I have ever been blessed to meet in my life. The employee benefits are great and the ED is always trying to find special ways to thank employees. I strongly believe in the great work SSA does everyday through providing employment to 200 individuals living with schizophrenia, providing housing to 55 people who have severe mental illness, and combating the stigma associated with this mental illness while out in the community educating Albertans.

Micro management! If you a person with great ideas and initiatives, forget it. You will be shut down for speaking up with the ideas etc. You have just initialed termination procedures. People lasted anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months. Watch any of the employment posting.
When I started work at the Schizophrenia Society in Calgary the individuals supported kept asking me "you aren't going to leave?" This was always asked of any new staff. This is not a way for an organization to support individual's with Schizophrenia. They require patience, stability, trust and empathy. They should not be worried about whether staff has been let go or not. How can you build a working relationship?

If you want an relaxing place to work and great clients this is it. But if you are looking for pay that reflects current wages, yea nope. Management micro manages like crazy. Communication is almost zero, and you will have co workers that will SLEEP on the job and not just doze off but full on sleep. If you are fired, they give no reason at all. You can be let go with no write up or discipline actions.

-A typical day working from home involves cleaning with time flexibility yet also meeting needs of my manger
-A typical day at work also involves cleaning windows on one shift; on another shift/day: dusting, vacuuming, taking out the garbage, cleaning the massage chair 
-the most enjoyable parts of my job are the flexible hours and the ability to work from home
-workplace culture was respectful yet I learned how to discuss things with management

If you want to be treated like garbage ...apply 
The qualifications required are a joke for the pay 
The organization as a whole is corrupt 
The Director has family members on the board... conflict of interest???? 
They fire people with out reason so don’t go there and expect to be treated with any level of respect 
As far as advocating for mental health what a joke ..... threatening to evict tenants, banning past tenants the list goes on

Wow! Just Simply an Amazing Experience For myself and I believe at least in some way, probably for most people who have been associated with SSA. I personally experienced such a beautiful warm welcome the first day I walked through those doors. It is a culture of acceptance and Love.

The tenants  are not so bad but the kitchen manager and the house manager are close that they always get their way and you just have to deal with the consequences. If you say no to what they are saying they  fire you for no reason. Communication here is very terrible. You will not get any news unless you ask. Very bad working here. 

Toxic, secretive work culture. Unsupportive & bullying management. Every effort is made to make  you feel insignificant. The work with clients is essential and there is significant value in supporting those living with mental illness however the management doesn’t want partnerships and will derail any good idea that is not theirs
