In September of 2018, the nursing hours in retirement were cut from 63 hours per day to 36 hours per day.  Needless to say we are doing almost double the work for the same pay.  On day shift, there are only 2 nurses who are responsible for approximately 230 residents.
On the evening/night shift, there is only one nurse.  This shift runs from 6:30 pm to 6:30 am. It wouldn't be so bad if they required retirement level of care; but many of our residents require long term care level of care.  Some of our residents have been turned down by long term care facilities because of there need for heavy care.
It seemed like one minute the company was telling us to prepare for higher level of care residents and more complex care residents and the next minute we're told that they are reducing registered staff. Does this make any kind of sense?
It used to be a great place to work, but that was years ago.  Staff are over worked and underpaid and unappreciated.  We used to have time to spend and chat with the residents, now since we are spread so thin, we sometimes don't even have a chance to know who they even are.
They are always going on about "Resident Centred Care" but the bottom line is all they care about. One of the Schlegels told us a story one time about a new resident who told him that, he expected the food to be not as good as what he was used to and he accepted that, but couldn't they at least buy some decent coffee.  He was told that he would check into it and get back to him, which he did. He said after close consideration, it was determined that a better coffee was not in the budget. These people pay on average about $5,000 a month to live here. (even more if they have to purchase extra services).
Often, we don't have our full breaks or don't have time to even have a break.
If you want a job where you often stay late (for no pay), don't get breaks and are not appreciated for your efforts; this job is for you.

In all of my years working as an RPN i have never seen such terrible management in my life. Upper management is selfish and unreliable. They all only care about themselves and how to make sure they cover their own behinds, especially so they don't have to do any actual work ( like do a med pass). I have talked to many staff members who all frankly feel undervalued and unappreciated by the upper management. The entire facility is run backwards. Not only does the upper management not care about their workers, to the extent that they are actively looking for over 10 PSW lines to fill, they do not understand the roles of the people that work in these areas ( PSWs, RPNS, Rec) and yet continue to keep making the wrong decisions to the point that other staff members have discussed wanting to quit. 

It is uncomfortable working here and demeaning. They make you feel as though you are the lowest person in this world everytime you walk in the door. Management looks down on everyone and those kinds of attitudes come off so disrespectful that some of the residents even start to question RPN reliability so they ask for an RN. It seems unbelievable that a facility who is entrusting all of the care to the RPN is making them look so poorly to their residents that they have to ask for RN assistance. Its very sad.

If there were a 0 star area I would be putting that for management because something really needs to be fixed.. from the top down. There is no need for 4 assistance directors of nursing  and having 2 RNs walking around everyday when we are so short of PSWs that people are doing doubles everyday to cover shifts. 

It is very obvious that management either doesn't know what they're doing or has just stopped caring. If they cared about resident and worker safety at all, they'd get up out of their chairs and lend a hand.

This is a great place to work. A typical day at work includes communicating with the residents (within their rooms, and in common areas) learning about their lives and personalities, as well as the other staff on the neighborhoods. As a housekeeper, the job entails cleaning the resident rooms, common areas, some areas on mainstreet, and deep cleaning. 

I've learned that everyday is different and employees have to take them in stride, because individuals suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's exhibit different personalities everyday. Most of the time the residents have expressions, to which they aren't sincere, and you learn to brush it off.

Management is awesome; each department has their own manager, as well as the general management who oversee the running of the entire building. Many are very friendly and willing to assist in whatever way they can. 

Co-workers mainly mingle within their departments, but strive to be cross-functional, meaning offering assistance to other departments as needed to provide superb care to the residents. 

The hardest part of the job is when a resident passes away. After sometime on the same neighborhood, employees grow attached to the people. When they pass away, it's as if we are losing a part of the family. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is the conversations; you never know what individuals from dementia and Alzheimer's will come up with in terms of a conversation. Topics can range from their pasts including significant others, children, grandchildren, their experiences to unfortunate non-lucid conversations.

Management is ridiculous.  They only care about the RNs. They expect you to work like a dog and thank them for it. On days off you're called, you're even called when you're already there. The entire scheduling team is a joke. They can never get anyones hours right. Bullying is a constant from upper management ( especially RN to RPN). They dont care to understand situations they just want them dealt with. They dont care if you've never had an orientation day on a floor they just want the shift covered. They basically care about nothing but themselves. NCs do absolutely nothing, it's like their job is to sit there and talk but have no action. The older RNs are great but the others dont seem to know how to be professional.  It's like this place works backwards..  they like to talk all about working together and teamwork but they themselves dont know what that is. They make you feel terrible about not taking shifts even when theres no way you could ( like if you're already there...) it's so stressful.  They CONSTANTLY guilt trip people to try to get them to do doubles which is very awkward. They dont bother checking to see if the person is working till 10 and has a 6 am the next day.. they only care to fill gaps so RNs dont have to work. All I've seen most of the younger RNs do is walk around and talk.. some of the older ones are more responsible but for the most part they dont seem to do much either way. I think that this establishment should stop thinking so highly of NCs and RNs who basically do nothing..  and start appreciating the people who do the most work like the RPNs, PSWs, Rec, ect, the people who actually interact with the residents in the village.. who, if they werent there.. you wouldnt have a workplace.

Working at Schlegel isn’t terrible. The problem is that you’re undervalued and severely underpaid by the company. 
Having good staff on your shift and having good management (or at-least getting along with management) is what determines how you feel about the job. You’ll have residents with or without problems, you’ll bond with them, and that’s just the day to day happenings; so it’s not a bad job or a difficult job as a nurse - it’s expectable. HOWEVER, if you are short by even a single person on any line (cleaning, cooking, PSW, PCA, VLS, nurse, LHIN) - You. Are. Finished. Just get your tissues out and Tylenol cause you’re going to need it, maybe take a lorazepam too, honestly.
Your day will not get better, you will have limited support, you will get pulled every which way, residents will be beyond angry, family/POAs will be even worse, all safety protocols will go out the window like it’s a mixed unit ICU/ER in a hospital. At Schlegel Villages you need to be prepared to do anything and everything and you’ve gotta accept that while your team wants the best for you and is grateful - the company doesn’t care, you’re another bill to pay.
Congrats, you’ll get ice cream or a T shirt every now and again, but you won’t be paid a livable or worthy wage. 
And if you don’t work on a full time line, don’t even think about benefits - it might be cheaper to go to an American hospital than it is to pay BIWEEKLY for health coverage. If you work full time and qualify though, they’re pretty good benefits.

A typical day at work would be coming in early to set up your station for the dishes. Get the condiments, glasses of water, juice, wine carts, and coffee ready for dinner. Write down the menu for the evening, and start serving juice and coffee as the residents come to sit down. After dinner, serve dessert, clean tables, take garbage out, wash dishes, and set up the tables for breakfast.

I learned that you have to be a people person, because you're going to be talking to the residents, and getting to know them. You need to be detailed oriented, and able to work in a fast paced environment. 

Management, is alright. Sometimes they are able to meet your every need ( time off, extra shifts, etc...) but sometimes they can't for obvious reasons. However, if you work part-time, and just changed your position to casual because you're going to university/college, good luck getting your hours back for holidays and summer. Sometimes you might be able to work on holidays but as for the summer, you won't be getting your hours back. You'll most likely be getting low hours during the summer.  

The hardest part of the job is getting everything done on time, but if you're fast and don't cut corners, then you'll be fine.

The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to know the residents. They love to talk to the staff about their life and what they did, and I personally love talking to them. Another enjoyable part of the job is that all the staff is there to help you out when you need help. Everyone is really nice, and loves their job.

The worse I have ever seen in our city (Windsor) no management actually leaves their office to go check to see if anybody’s doing their job. residents are NOT BEING WELLNTAKEN CARE OF! their nails are filthy their laundry is missing they wear clothing that is too small or too big because no one wants to take the time to find or locate their own personal property. And your pay for giving your best is  lowest in the city, this company is A multi million dollar business that has patience toothbrushes on the bathroom floor spit still in their cups from the day before because nobody wants to clean it but don’t worry management will not check that neither they get one wipe in the  front they get one wipe in the back and they get put back in bed if you think that your loved one is being placed on a lift to transfer them from one area to another safely you are out of your mind nobody knows how to use these things properly they do what they want and keep going .  the amount of cattiness unprofessionalism in an organization is very real here even if you are doing your job!! Pettiness/catty is alive and thriving here! every resident is It’s just a body at this village it’s just another $3500+ a month payment that St Clair Schlegel they collects and give the bare minimum unless family is around then the resident/patient will get the royal treatment, Momentarily that is.  Do not waste your time to be walked all over and degraded there is no life here …..RUN!

1 RPN and 4 PSW to 32 residents per floor
8hr shifts, consistent shift of either morning, evening or night (unless asked to pick up shifts or do a double)
May get pulled to work on a floor you were not trained on. They just want all positions occupied regardless of how prepared or how the you feel.
Burned out nurses giving away lots of shifts.
Drama and gossip on all levels. PSWs on your floor not getting along. Bullying new employees/agency.
Management shows appreciation but it doesn't always bring up the morale of the person or team. There is lack of respect and empathy and privacy. Ineffective conflict resolution.
Hard to balance work and life when they constantly call on your day off to pick up shifts and guilt trip you.
It is difficult to ask for vacation or days off.
It is hard to call in sick without being judged, nurses should know best if/when they are sick.
Not much job security as they can fire you for whatever reason regardless of having a union.
Job Advancement: specialize (wound nurse, personal expressions, rai/qi etc.) Or work in management
No pay raise after 3 years

BUT when it comes to the resident/patient, the interdisciplinary team works their hardest together to meet their needs and expectations and takes pride in their work. The resident always comes first in a home-like environment set up as a village. This culture is changing the way people think and feel about nursing homes.

I worked as a cook for schlegel for 3 months in 2019-2020 before the coronavirus outbreak. It was, by far, the worst place I've worked. The labour expectations for the cooks are unrealistic; one scheduled cook to produce breakfast & lunch meals for 250, ontop of serving breakfast, washing service dishes, maintaining and cleaning kitchen equipment, recording time & temperatures of food & equipment, and then move onto finishing food prep for the next shift. All within an 8 hour shift (they get upset if you stay late on clock). The food service managers and dieticians were office shut-ins with little to no influence on the day-to-day production of food, and would rather openly debate the superior coffee maker for thier office than jump in & help the successful function of thier staff & food service operation. A half handful of the dietary aides I worked with we're competent and able to help with prep, however a majority didn't seem to care. I was appalled that so many seniors pay good money to end up in a home where they can't even hire enough cooks to feed them. Schelegel, you need to contact your shareholders you value so much and revise your business plan.  Finally, the company's labour union would rather come into your workspace and yell at your rather than address the issue of unrealistic labour requirements. I would rate 0/5 if I could. 

Worked here as my first RPN job after moving in the area. It was decent, some nurses and psws were supportive on good days. On bad days, you were on your own. RPNS/RNs in management don't help the RN who sometimes is in charge of all 250+ residents and on med cart if an RPN calls in.(if you are an RN reading this literally the biggest mistake of your career and your license is ALWAYS on the line) They let family members abuse the heck out of you, its actually ridiculous. They wont help you if you are being bullied either, they actually blame it on you and will tell people what happened in the union meeting  Isn't that great? The first few months of covid was hectic but we managed. During the summer, we had to get agency nurses, a bunch of nurses quit etc. Like the title says, if you have a heart, do not work here. Make a mistake( a minor one too) and they will remind you your license is on the line.. how professional. If you are the type to say, a paycheck is a paycheck or it is what it is, well this is the PERFECT place to ruin your license, sanity and to earn money thats below normal wages! WOOHOO! (PSWs start at $18/19, RPNS 21/22, RNs $28/29).
