I worked at this location for less than a month. Going in, their definition of training is a lot different from other jobs i’ve worked at. They will vaguely demonstrate how to do a task and then expect you to fully understand and make no errors after that. If you do, you will hear about it. Not always verbally at first, but the huffing and puffing by the managers are enough to start making things difficult to stay focused and stay calm while trying to execute your task the right way. Many times I would be left alone to run the front of store before even knowing how to do certain tasks needed to help customers. (i.e: gift cards, returns, over the phone orders etc). Anytime I tried to voice that I had not been shown how to do something, the manager would act frustrated with me and tell me I need to look in “the book”. which is a binder they keep amongst many others that they keep outdated “how to’s” for only a few different tasks. 
I would constantly be walking into private conversations being had with the manager and the assistant manager in the back room, and I always had a strong feeling of discomfort by it as they always stopped what they were talking about when I walked in. With that, these conversations would be over the span of 15 to sometimes 30 plus minutes, while having their new hires out on the floor. 
The atmosphere alone as an employee there was enough to leave me crying at the end of most shifts (the manager and other employees said a lot of people do this there) and my anxiety has risen. 
They don’t treat their employees fairly here, as there are people who’ve been with the company for over 6 years, and they get treated horribly by management. I don’t think I have worked for a place where I have heard so much gossip in such a short period of time. 
Overall it’s a horrible place to work if you care about your mental health. 


Worked here for a month before issues with  management (me being unwilling to acquiesce to management not following workplace regulations in regard to scheduling- not communicating schedule changes with 24 hours notice, scheduling outside of given availability, not having access to time management system, and a general lack of care) resulted in my no longer being with the company. 
The area managers relative was an employee, and there were obvious signs of nepotism in regards to the behaviors displayed, in both interactions with other employees, and lack of following proper procedures, free from repercussions.  

Two of the employees who worked in the location I was in had been there for over 5  years, and neither had received a raise in that time period. The company puts forward a nice front, and has high expectations of the employees, but there simply isn't enough given to the employees in return for some of the expectations being set by management (ie. being told you have stay longer for a shift the day of, and being made to feel uncomfortable for refusing to do so. the manager was openly hostile afterwards refusing to acknowledge, or interact from then on).

Overall I would recommend if you value your time, and have a reasonable level of expectation for a work place (livable wage potential, reasonable scheduling, reasonable and competent management). If you're just looking for a relatively easy part-time job, and don't care about how much money you make, or about being taken advantage of by predatory management practices, then you can definitely be happy here!

This place is so unorganized and under staffed when they expect full staff work to be done they’ve had more people leave then come in 

They greatly show favouritism where the managers friends will legitimately sit in the managers office for over an hour and they’ll talk about non work related subjects but if you’re talking on the floor to someone about anything for over a minute they try to come down on you about it recently 2 people did something one was fired for it the (which is one of the friends/favourites w) was put on forced vacation another claimed to have joined afternoon shift was only seen staying till the end of the shift maybe twice he did a six hour shift took four breaks and yet nothing was said and if anyone mentions anything about them they do nothing about it this place is very boring unorganized and unfair to its workers I highly don’t recommend working here they say about their pay raises if you do long term here you better plan on waiting cause they ain’t coming you should expect a few threats like the out bursts of them saying they’ve gotten the go ahead of firing everyone and if the understaffed workers don’t pick up the pace and do a full staff job (while on mandatory 5 hour overtime) will also have mandatory Saturday overtime aswell meanwhile you know those favourites getting away with leaving early and messing around people are starting to realize it and get sick of it they’ll soon have nobody to work for them

The training in head office is awful. People treat you like you should already know how to do things and get frustrated when you ask questions. Most people in that area have been there forever and they forget what it’s like to learn a whole new job/system. For an education company who spends so much time saying “every child learns differently” they don’t put that into consideration with their training for grownups.   There are no policies and procedures to follow. That’s not to say they are bad people. I did enjoy my co workers personally. 

Some managers have a better than you attitude and will say what you want to hear to your face but do something completely different behind your back. Also their shortcomings are usually projected onto someone else lower on the totem pole. So you may get blamed for a project not getting done one time, or something not getting done when you were sitting around waiting for what you needed to do your job. 

All in all it’s not a bad job. They have a lot of awesome products and you do get a pretty great discount on toys and school supplies. The buyers have excellent taste.  They do nice little things that only a family run company would do.  I wouldn’t go back, but I also don’t regret my time there.

A typical day is setting up XL sheets for daily and nightly close, email to for daily store activity report, and daily Que count (mini inventory count) and setting up coaching/hourly check paper work.
Store well merchandised and front faced before, during and after during store operations.
I have learned quite a bit on some of the hurdles families experience with learning, social issues and the cross over with elderly parents experiencing same.  I am excited to be able to listen, ask and solve the best solution.  If I am not able to find a solution I let customer know that someone else in store may be able to provide assistance.
Our store has a terrific working relationship and we all communicate well as a team to achieve promotional set ups, price and sale changes.
Hardest part would be the red bins stock arrives in.  Some can be somewhat heavy (but does reduce excess recycling) 
Customer support will help but have experienced issues when an item is no longer available there is no support to what may be the best available option to inform customer.
Ugliest part of day is using hanging hooks.  Not sure if they contain lead

This company has some amazing staff but they are clearly undervalued by higher up people. They do not compensate their staff appropriately and expect them to jump through hoops to do a job they are never fully trained for with limited resources. 
Their outside sales team members are amazing but pushed to their breaking point with tasks every day. And their CEO is also their HR which makes for an uncomfortable report to be sent by most lower staff members. They expect you to do to much for a none living wage and they do not have your back when you aren’t around. Marketing is pushed to much for what their actual job is and very strongly do not recommend applying to this company unless you want added stress with bare pay and limited support unless you beg for it. Then at that point they may just blame you for not getting your job done. 

Working at Scholar's Choice can be a blast when you have a good team - I've seen this firsthand. The problem is, upper management is so unorganized, restricting, and blasé about their responsibilities, that many of your teammates will get (rightfully) fed up and quit. Try as you may to troubleshoot and solve problems, you'll be punished for any solutions you do come up with while you wait for head office to get back to you - which could take from hours to days to WEEKS. Their favourite expression is "Figure it out." I was never properly trained on company policies or procedures, despite consistently seeking clarification. Assume whatever position you're applying for will hold the responsibilities and duties of the level ahead (ie. Sales Associates get Keyholder responsibilities, Keyholders act as Assistant Managers, and Store Managers suffocate under the pressure of everyone's expectations). Great discount, though.

The management and staff are amazing, we help each other out and work as a team. My first retail job and I honestly love the experience, so much better than restaurants

Nothing really, customers are great, can get hectic at times but nothing too crazy. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
You’re always doing something whether it be learning all the products they have or some light cleaning duties. Plus bonus everyone is super nice and chill

Helping people find whatever it is that they need, ringing through customers and getting to know your customers and coworkers.

Co-workers are the important part of running a store they are genuine and love to work at their job.
Managing the store and doing outside sales for daycares and schools it is time consuming and not enough hours allotted for this in store hours.
Enjoy being helpful to my customers and giving them the service they deserve. Like the one to one with our customers.

Coworkers are great. The products are nice and it's not overly demanding physically.

Company changes schedules at a moments notice and you have to speak up get and recognition or pay increases.

Work environment is relaxed. Culture is practically nonexistent.

Standard retail job. Light cleaning, mercha dising, use of cash and point of sale
