A typical day at work focused heavily on customer interaction, repricing cards (each card was in a plastic slip which had to be opened and manually repriced as they were all listed in American prices) and ensuring store cleanliness.

Ultimately the team I worked with - my employees, my sister store and our area manager - were agreeable people and good to get along - we helped each other out as much as we could. 

The best part of the job was finding the best possible product for highly particular customers. I had numerous returning customers that I was on a first-name basis.

The hardest part of the job was dealing with expectations placed by head office. As with most larger retail businesses, head office is utterly disconnected from their stores. The store I worked at only received head office visits about once a year, where the execs only wanted to know the positives about the stores - didn't want to hear about any negatives going on. Middle management was under tremendous stress from head office as well which negatively impacted store culture. Furthermore while I was working there, head office was "finding efficiencies" to reduce costs despite showing sustainable growth. A lot of penny-pinching at the top to squeeze as much short-term profit as possible negatively impacted the culture of the store.

Papyrus is a great place to work for students who have limited availability and is interested in growing in the retail industry. The manager's work hard to train and support their employees. The atmosphere in the store is friendly but competitive (in a positive way). You learn to handle specific customer concerns and are able to cater to them. The job also teaches you how to handle rush hours and how to be calm under pressure. Overall it is a great place to work if you're looking to improve your skills.

I loved the atmosphere of the workplace. I learned how to wrap gifts, a skill I've used outside of the work place. The management team was always supportive and friendly. We knew when we needed to be professional but we also had a good balance of fun. It was physically strenuous at times, especially when we had to carry heavy boxes, but we worked as a team as much as possible in order to avoid injuries and strains. I loved helping customers and booking appointments, wrapping presents and organizing displays.

I went into this role with previous management experience. I am treated like a child and hate my job but I need the money. If it’s your first job then it’s awesome because you will learn a lot. But as someone who has been in the work force for 10 years, I go to work wanting to quit every shift. I was promised full time hours when I was hired and I’m lucky if I get 3 shifts a week at 3 hours.  and there are days where I can’t handle being treated like that so I go home in tears.

This was a great place to work while I was in school. My manager was incredibly flexible and helpful when I had any questions. I have never had a better district manager and would happily work with her again. The downside was that hours had been on the decline which did not bother me as I was finishing school and am looking for new work.

The DL is hard to work for but it seems to trickle down from corporate. They expect too much in a short amount of time with little to no positive feedback. The staff otherwise are great with a drive to succeed. There are no raises unless government mandates.

Sadly this industry didn’t really survive the pandemic. The stores were beautiful, and nice to work at, but it felt like they were t willing to get enough supplies for base daily operation. Ex: Ribbon and gift-wrap. 

Long hours, not paid enough for the additional stress of dealing with ego driven management - lots of time wasted on busy work rather than clients needs, always tense - micro managed on every level.

Good company, fair hours and wages, good vacation days and time off, fair days off and schedules changes. Excellent management and co workers at the Chinook location.

SRG is now closing all of its locations across Canada and the US.  There will be 1400 people out of work
