I truly loved my role as a Family Development Worker at Seabird Island. The work itself was deeply meaningful, and supporting families and community members was the most rewarding part of the job. The position allowed me to grow professionally and reminded me why I chose this field in the first place.
However, there were serious challenges at the management level. The organization experienced high staff turnover, which made consistency and morale difficult to maintain. Employee wellness was not prioritized, despite the emotionally demanding nature of the work. There were also ongoing concerns about management practices and transparency, which impacted trust and the overall work environment.
While the role and community were incredible, sustainable change in leadership, accountability, and staff support would be necessary for this to be a healthy long-term workplace.

Seabird Island focuses around natural environment, physical/mental/spiritual health and learning.

It is the greatest community I have known and someday I wish to give back to this community.

They support all ages and help individuals find their path, whichever it may be. Youth support, Labor pool, job searching and job providing. Education opportunities for many forms of programs.

A typical day at work involves working with many of the community members and the wishes they have, problem solving each situation to achieve what it is that needed. Working in physical labor for distribution, maintenance, cleaning of the building facility, environment as well as aiding the members of the community.

The management in each department is awesome and will provide you with any and all information that you ask and regard to.

The most enjoyable part of each work day is working as hard as you can, as long as you can and achieving each objective as quickly as possible.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Going home. The environment is extremely toxic, the upper management doesn’t respect anyone that isn’t part of their family and will constantly remind you of this. There is a single family controlling the whole company, and they won’t take anyone’s suggestions unless it puts more money in their pockets. Very corrupt.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Upper management and their lack of respect, their constant pulling you away from your work to do their bidding.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
This is a toxic environment and I urge everyone to stay away if you value your sanity.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
If I can actually get started on a task I know I’ll be pulled away to work on something meaningless.

What is the best part of working at the company?
the staff there is awesome and they have the best service for a dentist and a doctor and optometry and they are all about helping everyone in need

there was nothing stressful working at the seabird island band everyone got along

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
their is no typical day it is a great place to work together as a team

This job requires a lot of thinking, organizing, and setting deadlines to be prepared for an event. 

You can learn a lot in a typical day from people, use of the computer, and inviting people to show up for different events. 

You need to be very particular about certain tasks and being a great team player and to keep people motivated in helping you set up, prioritize, and clean up all before, during, and after an event. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is during an event, seeing, entertaining,  motivating, and keeping all peoples happy.

Management seems proud to have less education (Really less) and no skills to manage anything. Wish I could leave. Demonic people working here. No value of people working for more than 5 years. This place is just wasting the money given to the band and no they don't value anything other than idiots. They report you for working hard because they don't work themselves and me working more makes them look bad. Bunch of weak minded fools.

The workload can be sometimes manageable to completely unfair while being forced to do duties outside of what you were hired for. The workers and management talk trash behind each other’s backs while rumors are spread rampantly.  Management changes in the last couple year have been crazy and you’re lucky if you know who your boss is or if they’re even in that day.

- High demand of work in short deadlines
- Miscommunication
- Long wait periods for critical/urgent tasks to be completed

What you believed you learned:
Most staff do not have any formal education/relevant training to their given role.




They were excellent at understanding cultural commitments. Compassionate team. Wage could been better for amount of years worked there. Friendly , knowledgeable team. Accreditation made employees work at a better standard. Having all sectors of individual, family, Elders Health excellent.

Senior Management is too worried about getting blamed for things, so they are always pointing fingers at each other and not taking responsibility for things.  So this causes them not to work together and always causes grief.
