Sensity Deafblind and Sensory Support Network of Canada

The company produces new policies whenever they feel like it that hardly ever benefit the employees. If you're looking for a flexible employer you won't find it here. Work life balance can be very poor, especially when they release policies not allowing prime-time vacations. The union contract that only benefits full-time employees don't help with the flexibility either. The union reps never have a straight answer and the contract is confusing. I can honestly say the union never benifited me, only ever hindered my employment. The schedules, policies, and procedures are constantly changing, no consistency what so ever. The pay is also low, we hadn't received raises in a long time. 

The staff just hangout all day, some even sleep, constant errors, and management doesn't do anything about complaints. Not a lot of interaction with the consumers. Staff constantly complaining about each other, management, but won't ever tell people or management directly. The supervisor is rude to staff when faced with questions or conflict. Doesn't know how to properly manage the program. 

Extreme favoritism runs deep within the company and staff. If one person doesn't like you, especially if you're new, good luck. The only part about this job I enjoyed was working with the consumers. They are amazing and working with them is a lot of fun. If it wasn't for the consumers I would have left a lot sooner. The training department is also really good, and head office has a nice set up for their local consumers. 

I am a current intervener, I have been here for over a year and I feel I can give a good judgement now for the workplace. 

I think the negative reviews are a bit dramatic, just as I feel the same way about the good ones. 

At the end of the day, it REALLY depends on which house/program you work in and who your direct supervisor is. This is what makes or breaks the environment, not the work itself. 

One thing I will agree with is that we are very under paid. Right now we have a $3 wage enhancement during covid, which makes it the amount we SHOULD be getting paid, however this will be taken away eventually which is unfortunate. 

But this does reflect the skill set. A lot of the locations do not require you to have relevant experience or specific schooling- so in that perspective the lower pay makes sense. So it's great pay for people without the education/experience, but bad pay for those who do have it. 

Raises are also not a thing here. And being an intervener is the best role- if you are tempted into a promotion with HQ, you will burn out almost immediately and quit- it's not worth it. 

The work itself is enjoyable and rewarding, in the houses that I specifically work in. I cannot speak on behalf of all the other programs though, as again, every place is different. 

Unfortunately, my experience working at the DeafBlind Network of Canada was disappointing. While the mission of the organization is admirable and the individuals we supported were truly inspiring, the work environment and management made it difficult to stay motivated or feel valued as an employee. 

One of the most challenging aspects of the job was the management. There was a noticeable lack of organization, communication, and support from leadership. Concerns raised by staff were often dismissed or ignored, and there was little room for professional growth or constructive feedback. The environment sometimes felt toxic, with favouritism and poor treatment of frontline staff. Management could care less about their employees and more about kissing up to the parents to make themselves look good.

The workload was often overwhelming, with little regard for staff well-being or mental health. Training was either rushed or inconsistent, leaving many employees underprepared for complex situations. When issues arose, there was little support or aggressive phone calls from management. I was being trained by people who were not comfortable training me as they had only been there for a month longer than me. 






Run. Out of all the support agencies I've worked for, this one is by far the worst. In family programs, the families are allowed to treat employees like garbage and management does little to nothing about it. You're basically told to suck it up and make it work. 
Long story short, I went on maternity leave, and two months before the end of it, I was told that I was getting transferred to another program 2 hours away from my home and my family, without my consent, and I was never given a reason why. I either had to drop everything and move my family 2 hours away, or I had to commute 2 hours in the snow belt to get to work, where I was offered even less hours than I originally had at my previous placement. 
I begged them to find something closer, because I could not make it work, and I needed the money to support my daughter and help pay the bills. But it was physically impossible with a one year old baby, no daycare lined up and the small amount of money I would be making to commute 2 hours to work a 5 hour shift. They tried to accommodate me at the new location, but because of the policy stating that the families get the final say (which I think REALLY needs to be revised), there wasn't much else that could be done and this new location was my only option. 
I was essentially forced to quit.

When the organization restructured and expanded services, it left staff in the dust.  Constantly under/short staffed.  If you brought up issues, you would be threatened with job termination, depending on who your manager was.  Unsafe working conditions, expected to lift/ transfer clients with out proper equipment or training.  
Some staff where amazing to work with but others would stab you in the back, gossip and throw you under the bus to save face.  
There are only a small hand full of staff on the "office side" who where genuinely caring.  
Breaks are written in to the contracts but you rarely, if ever, actually get to take them due to being under staffed.  You had better say yes to picking up extra shifts and extending your hours (see comment about threats of job termination).  Work life balance is impossible.  Vacation time is frequently denied while at the same time you are told to use your vacation time.  Vacation time that you do not use is not paid out when you leave.  If you call in sick, you can expect to be harassed and questioned about it the next shift you work. 
The clients are what kept me going until I couldn't take any more.  They are truly wonderful to work with!   

Wonderful consumers to work with, awesome team members. Management is the issue. They are doing their best but supervisors are over worked, there’s not enough frontline staff. 
The agency is growing and the management seems to be struggling to keep up. Staff are frustrated with staff turnover, poor scheduling and lack of support. Many staff have utilized loop holes in scheduling to control their schedules to obtain better work life balance.
Staff that want to work are often met with contract postings that often don’t include any incentives or pay in lieu of benefits or permanent employment. 
The agency in its self is amazing for the consumers that rely on their support and services. There has been a lack of services during covid but precovid consumers had wonderful opportunities. Staff turnover and lack of new staff has cause significant burnout for frontline employees and middle management. 

The family I was placed with did not need an intervener. They needed more PSWs. Under paying intervenors because you don't want to pay for PSWs is not okay.
As for the company, absolute trash. Will waste your time if there's a problem and keep you off work until they eventually ignore everything you have said despite having to waste your time giving "your side". The company does NOT care about their employees, as they see it, everyone is replaceable which is why they don't keep employees long. 

I enjoyed my time at Sensity purely based off of the people supported. However, there is no transparency, secrets are kept from families regarding health and safety of their children, Supervisors are over worked and under-paid, turnover is incredibly high due to changing schedules, there is lack of accountability, and ever-changing policies. Employees seldom know what to expect when walking onto shift as the 'rules' change daily. Intervention is not provided as expected and the services have fallen to more of a basic daily living support. Especially during COVID, it has become evident that the safety and security of staff and consumers is not a priority and often times they are put at risk. I would encourage anyone to work here simply for the relationships with those in service. However, working as an employee within this organization is not for the faint at heart.

This could be an amazing place to work. 
The consumer are individual with complex need but very sweet. Hard to not get attached to them as they have an amazing attitude towards the intervenors.

However the management are horrible.
That is some general manager from the head office that has no clue  respecting employees.  They will give all walk over you like you are a bag of garbage.
They have no respect for you.
They can easily yell like that are you Mother’s.
Some of the college will easily through you under the bus and lie about anything to protect themselves.
Extremely toxic environment as some of the intervenor expend more time gossiping about peers instead of doing their job.
Full of lazy people but those are the ones the company likes.
This is a place for you to work, get experience do you best for the consumer and move forward.

My experience in working for this organization was most concerning and I would not recommend the opportunity to anyone else.  They recently underwent a name change so the previous reviews posted are no longer visible.  Sadly, changing a name does not change a culture.  The organization was recently unionized as well.

I had a positive experience with the training department at head office as the training is thorough and comprehensive.  I also felt thankful to meet the people I was able to support.  They are truly some of the most incredible people I have ever met.

Unfortunately, the culture that I experienced was abhorrent.  There are ongoing recruitment and retention issues that meant continual staffing crises.  I experienced bullying behaviour and could no longer be a part of a toxic work environment.  I would not advise to anyone that they apply to this organization if they are seeking a positive and professional work culture.
