What is the best part of working at the company?
Building connections with the youth and being a positive support person in their lives.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
My position wasn’t really stressful but I would say that grocery shopping with all the youth was a little stressful. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Overall it was a good work environment and the hours are really flexible. I loved working there. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I worked evening shift so I would spend time in the office, then start cooking dinner with the youth in the home. After dinner the youth would do their chores and we would either watch a movie or go for a ride to get out of the house for a little bit.

I've worked at shawenim abinoojii for a long time and the thing I enjoy the most is the passionate people and positive workplace culture I've experienced. There is a lot of humor, strong values, and compassion from the staff in their work. The benefits and pay are good, esp for a nonprofit. It is an organization that is constantly growing which means there is opportunity for growth as an employee but there is also growing pains at times (fast paced work, stressful situations, areas where the organization needs to build its processes). Despite this, it is a good place to work.

No job security, threatened with your livelihood on a regular basis. A lot of lateral violence in the workplace. No support from the top management,supervisors, executive director.  Blindsided and unseen undercurrents. No honesty or truth, the seven sacred teachings are certainly not followed as they say they do. Very westernized thinking, “profit before people”.  They really don’t care for their employees or the people they serve. They just care about the money and the grants to better their own lives, not the children in care or the families they are supposed to be helping.

The best part is the team environment. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Favoritism and poor management. High employee turn-out, oppressive work environment. Gossiping, misinformation sharing and false accusations run rampant.

Oppressive and counterproductive.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Be available for everyone at all times.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The people!  Flexible understanding, reliable job!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not much that I can think of.

Beautiful! Wonderful, based on nurturing the children

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Good I can pick my schedule while I go to work or school.


Not  well organized. 
No formal training of policies and procedures. No orientation.
No guidance  or support for caregivers or support staff.
Don't bother asking for help they just shut you down and make you seem incompetent. 
Lots of favoritism within management 
Nepotism exists here also 
Unrealistic expectations put on staff.
No room for advancement to pursue learning and development opportunities to enhance job performance. 




Personally, working with Shawenim is a good experience. I enjoy working  with kids and watching them grow and learn everyday. I work support from 12-8 usually with one child and the pay is worth it. But sometimes I work with 3 or more children and it becomes challenging and stressful, and by then, the pay is not worth it.

Lack of communication, flights always cancelled, house that was supposed to come with supports never given, never dealt with issues, lack of maintaince on homes, unable to have days off due to anyone being able to handle my home and kids, allowed immature drama from other house parents, low company vehicle availability. 

It is a lot of work but it is contributing to families, communities and Nations... what could be better?  
There is lots of room for advancement and clear objectives. The strategic plan is very clear.  Benefits are great and lots of people around to ask questions to. Lots of support.

Rewarding work with children. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Unequal pay and favouritism based on who you know. New staff being paid more than staff who have been with the company for multiple years. Staff is not valued or respected.
