Majority of the work day involved, but was not limited to, standing behind the counter serving customers. Other duties included making coffee, restocking and cleaning beverage dispensers, pulling stock from the back room to restock shelves, cleaning the public washroom, restocking beverage coolers, changing promotional signage and displays, emptying outside garbage bins, restocking window washing stations, sweeping the parking lot, wiping down fuel pumps, shoveling snow, washing windows, washing the floor, putting away deliveries, pricing items, counting tobacco and lottery stock, reading back fuel tank levels to fuel suppliers, dusting, etc. 

As a first job, I learned the basics of time management, responsibility, cash management and handling procedures, and how to operate transactions. 

As a franchise business, our owner acted as management, and he tried his best to address our concerns despite being the owner and manager of several other stations. This sometimes became an issue, however; as he wasn't always available at times requiring immediate intervention, or when customers or suppliers asked to speak to the manager. One system of interacting with management, which I really enjoyed, especially since it was unknown when he would be in to discuss issues, is that we kept a daily communication log (just a simple notebook) at the counter entrance that employees would read over at the start of the shift, often containing notes of the importance of certain tasks to be completed that day or upcoming events / promotions. Employees could also write down notes to management to read or messages to each other if you weren't going to see them before their shift ended.

As with any job, it had its ups and downs, but the relationships I formed with my co-workers were a massive source of motivation and mentor-ship. The atmosphere was very much relaxed, as you could often find time to chat or take a quick break IF you made sure you were caught up on your duties for the day and didn't have customers to attend to.

The hardest part of the job was probably the same for any retail job, which was dealing with challenging customers; the boisterous customers who would disturb others, the customers who would complain to no end after being asked to provide ID for tobacco and lottery purchases, the customers who couldn't understand that occasional errors in out computer systems, were ultimately beyond our control and would shift blame to employees regardless of how we tried to such handle situations, and so on and so forth.

On the flip side, the most enjoyable part of the job was also the customers. Some customers we had formed close relationships with (we once had a birthday get together after closing for a few of our employees, and invited along some of our regulars and a few others who worked for a local towing company that were regular customers as well). You get to meet many interesting people, from all walks of life, who all have something interesting to talk about. Many of our regular customers were very compassionate as well, offering to step in to defend employees from other belligerent customers, offer a hand to move something that was too large to move on your own, or even chase down and get the license plate numbers from people stealing fuel (this was before prepay only, and we couldn't always see the license plates on vehicles at the fuel pumps).

My typical day would involve: Provide overall leadership and direction to the site Joint Health and Safety Committees *Overseeing the implementation of corporate and site-specific Health and Safety procedures in accordance with all pertinent regulations during project execution;
*Driving a comprehensive and effective contractor safety management program; 
*Assisting with hazard assessment activities (JHA and JSA) 
*Maintaining an active field presence; 
*Actively participating in Shell and Contractor safety meetings; 
*Conducting and documenting inspections and focus/management system audits; 
*Conducting, supporting and documenting behavioral HSE observations; 
*Taking an active role in HSE training and competency initiatives; 
*Leading or supporting incident and accident prevention, investigation and analysis; 
*Assisting with the coordination of environmental requirements for the site. 
*Maintaining relevant HSE documentation (electronically).
*Proactively partner with contractors to establish goals and objectives and to identify and implement appropriate, practical and sustainable HSE solutions to existing challenges that enable the contractors to 1) meet or exceed applicable HSE laws and regulations (including tracking, analyzing and communicating HSE legislative and regulatory developments); 2) identify and effectively manage HSE risks and opportunities; and 3) comply with HSE policy, standards and Codes of Practice
*Perform HSE audits of sites to assess compliance with applicable local, provincial and national regulations as well as HSE policy, standards and Codes of Practice
*Ensure that key internal HSE processes are implemented onsite (e.g., HSE Letter of Assurance, Risk Management, Emergency Management Systems, Reporting and Incident Investigation, submission of periodic reports to various government agencies, etc.)
*Lead Incident Investigations and perform Root Cause Analysis as needed. Prepare effective communication documents for senior management, government agencies as well as appropriately communicating "shared learning" throughout the North American business
*Perform HSE Emergency Response Actions as necessary
*Represent the company in interactions with HSE government agencies regarding compliance matters, including enforcement actions
*Develop and maintain professional relationships with key HSE personnel throughout the Oil and Gas Industry
*Camp inspection including dwelling/living space requirements, food preparation and occupational hygiene as per Canadian Food and Drug Act
I've learned a great safety culture and productive methods to instill these ideas to workers. The most difficult part of the job can be when some workers or management disagree with certain rules and regulations but when you can explain things to them so they understand and agree it can be very rewarding.

“Knowledge comes by eyes always open and working hands, and there is no knowledge that is not power”. This statement characterizes my beliefs. Ever since I attended the first industrial visit during my studies at FAUJI FERTILIZER BIN QASIM LIMITED (FFBL) in Supply chain Department. Where I learnt all the procurement, logistics procedure, customer services, warehousing and SAP software.

I have nurtured a dream of becoming a part of the top level management team of a firm. Now, after two years of relevant experience in SAF international group of companies as a Procurement Officer in Procurement Department and my responsibilities was to all protocol of Procurement Department. E.g. Floating enquiries after receipt of indents, prepared comparative statements and negotiated with the sellers and managed substantial cost savings for the organization.The power of knowledge seems to call me out persuading me to seek more.Early in my life, at Iqra University, I learnt the value of hard work and perseverance. During a recent project “effectiveness of mystery shopping survey in evaluation of customer service” I had managed an implementation of everything; everyone loved working with me. Similarly, it was a unique experience to walk with them. I worked with Iqra university research centre (IURC) on research project. I am excellent in public speaking. I always create a team atmosphere that at once allows for outstanding output, while maintaining the most excellent relations with the people working with me and for me. I am a great team player and peers have expressed interest in working with me in future. 

Soon after my graduation I set out to realize my dream by joining Shell Pakistan Limited as a Global Retail Supply Chain Support & MCSP where my responsibilities were to act as a first focal point for all customers and analyzing customer’s queries/complaints quickly and respond with appropriate answer to meet their demands within agreed time frame, as per the Complaint Management System. The company trained me in global procurement and appointed me as a Global Retail Supply Chain Support for the procurement team at Shell Pakistan Limited which I consider as one of the biggest achievement so far in my life.

A typical day at work would be to arrive 15 minutes early and open the store, and start on daily routine such as making several pots of coffee throughout the day, counting till, unlocking smoke cabinets, and outside windshield washer cabinets, filling up washer fluids outside for customer use, and for customers to buy, put squigees in buckets, refill coffee cups, lids, napkins, stocking shelves, smokes, pop, chocolates, candy, writing down what needs to be ordered , counting smokes , cigars, snuff at end of shift, counting till, and doing end of day paper work.

I didn't really learn too much at this job, it was all straight forward things ive done before when I worked at 7eleven.

management was hardley around. they just came to do paper work from previous day , and pull out the smoke cartons I needed to fill shelves in front. 

I usually didn't work with any other co-workers, except when I was training new employees who were going to work on the weekends, or evening shift.

The hardest part of my job would be when it gets really busy, and theres a line up, and I have to use the bathroom, and there is no other co-worker to help me manage the till at the time. 

The part I enjoyed the most about this job, was meeting new people , making small talk, and socalizing with the regular customers.
I also enjoyed making a lists of things to do for the day and setting goals for myself, and rushing to get everything done before my shift was over.

It is fairly flexible to work a variety of the three shifts available (7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM, 11PM-7AM) on a part-time or full-time basis as the manager usually manages several stations in the area. People come and go as well, thus freeing up shifts.

The salary is what you can expect from a gas station job regardless of your education, experience, or how long you have been there.

There are virtually no opportunities for advancement at Shell's retail locations. Even transferring from retail to the other business sectors is virtually impossible or there is no consideration for the fact you are a Shell employee. Job security is very good as long as you perform well.

Management depends on the location you are at, my manager was very good and was very invloved in the operation of the stations and understanding when it came to customer complaints from the view of both the employee and customer. Corporate management is a bit different, they keep trying to socially engineer every interaction with every customer. This makes customer service more robotic/animated as opposed to genuine and it makes both the employee and customer cringe a little.

Cannot say much about the job culture. You will have to deal with bad customers calmly regardless of the situation no matter what. If you cannot take a verbal berating lying down, don't take this job.

A productive day with a start of email responses related to LEAN Projects and Coordinations. Requests usually regarding creating logistics for LEAN sessions and events.  Also, included creating soft copies of data collected and presenting analysis, monthly reports for stakeholders.

Learnt a great deal about Project Management, Dashboards, Key Performance Indicators, Front-Line Problem Solving, Planning and Organizing logistics, and last but not the least, LEAN tools and Methodolgies to solve productivity and efficiency issues.

Management being staying on top of deliverable yet understanding and flexible with employee needs. Keeping up a healthy work atmosphere so that employees stay happy and deliver better results. Making sure everyone gets a work-life balance for aspired results. Safety was the top most priority for every worker, contractor, and employee.

Worked with a great diverse team of professionals from all kinds of demographics and backgrounds. All of them being Six-Sigma Black Belts in LEAN Manufacturing and Management.

Shell has a large pool of talent to pull from, and  it is easy to find SME to mentor and coach you in your field

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Because of their business model of “do more with less” a significant amount of employee time is spent on job justification, rather than actually being productive. Overall employee satisfaction survey results have been in decline for years, with job security, and growth being the poorest result. This is steadily being over taken by dissatisfaction in pay

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Overall, this is a decent company as long as you recognize that is a company of 90k employees. There are good and bad groups, however most projects and assets work in silos. While they certainly try to be inclusive, it is important to remember that unless you are an EC level employee, you are just the number you are assigned at hiring.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
In my role a typical would consist of assurance activities with contractors, meetings with stakeholders, delivering training to internal clients. Sprinkle in a couple dozen meetings that may or may not have added value…

The position of a Chief Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Superintendent on or for a Barge Type Drill Ship MODU ( modular offshore drilling unit )  is very demanding of knowledge with experience.  These positions are not for the light hearted or inexperience personnel in their professions.  The Chief Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Superintendent  are responsible for the welfare of at least 120 personnel on board,  the drilling vessel and all of the components that is required to maintain life aboard along with the 24/7 -365 componentry for the drilling operations.  The mode of trans[port to and from these drilling infrastructures is by helicopter. Generally you land on the Hili-deck of the vessel and you have a ten minute hand over  from the parting Chief Mechanical Engineer, then your on duty for 24/7 -28 days tell the parting Chief returns so you can be relieved for your rotational time off. The Mechanical Superintendent is shore base, between the Chief and the Superintendent these drilling installations have to be maintained, repaired, refurbished so as these infrastructures can support the safety of personnel, welfare of personnel and the drilling operations  24/7-365 without fail.

What a great work environment Shell Canada offers to all its employees!!! I worked as a contractor for six months and really enjoyed my time in there.

I had the best manager anyone could ever ask for and the team I worked with and supported are busy professionals who take work seriously but still have a sense of humour.

Typical day at work was performing daily admin routines such as: calendar management; prepare weekly agendas and meeting minutes; maintain office files, records and monthly expense statements; on/off boarding of (new) Shell and contractor’s personnel; booking local and international (live) conferences using Microsoft Office Communicator (MOC); SharePoint (and livelink) Focal (Duties required I added/removed and also gave people “read-write and/or read-only access” to highly confidential documents); expense statements, etc.

The hardest part of the job was to respond to high-level emails on behalf of manager, and the most enjoyable was the feel of being in control of your job and the office.

I would definitely work at Shell again, should there be an opportunity.
