Shepherds of Good Hope

Just as the title suggests, I don't think there's quite enough words to put into focus how not great sheps truly is. 

I loved my fellow co workers, even the clients were great. But shepherds as a company? Terrible. 

I got paid minimum wage to save lives, with little to no training. My first overdose i handled ALONE. Because shepherds throws you in SINK OR SWIM. And the ones that are at expense are the clients and us. Because to them we are expendable. You can see that by their roaster list. And how they treat staff. 

Management talked down to me, when I informed them about safety concerns of both Frontline workers and clients. I was severely overlooked and sexualized. They also would schedule me on days I DID NOT PICK and expect me to work while I had class and was a university student.

The only plus is free food, but remember sheps is just a place to get your leg up into the Frontline path. Nothing more. 

And, something to note, no client of mine wants to stay at sheps. Calls it "the shepherds of no hope" and insists that they would rather sleep on the street than go there. And I don't blame them. 

Hope my review was overall informative. 


As fulfilling as working at Sheps can be, it is also extremely intense and you are required to remain completely impersonal with clientele.
Overdoses and fights (both verbal & physical) quickly become completely normal in your typical shift. However they have a very strict policy regarding employee/ client interactions/ relationships. The employees are expected to remain extremely impersonal with all clients, both drop in and long-term residents. 
If you are someone who is very loving and actively supportive (typically in a hands-on way) I strongly encourage you to consider all aspects of this organizations employment requirements 
 

A very interesting work experience. Allows you to work with other individuals to achieve the goal of helping those less fortunate. The job starts with actually cooking and preparing the meals that we serve to the homeless. After a few hours of preparation, we prepare the food for serving. While some volunteers serve the food, other will wash and scrub the dishes that were used when cooking the food. Preparing meals for a large number of people is a hard task, even when the task is is done collectively, which is why good teamwork, communication and effort is required when volunteering at The Shepherds of Good Hope.  

Very disgruntled. Upper management gives staff  the impression that they care but this is not reflective in their actions i.e. how they support staff in crisis or in dealing with a shift in work culture. There is constant movement within organization with management members getting promoted and job titles being changed. If you like a dangerous, challenging environment, where job expectations are changing on a month-month basis, then this jobs for you!

Of note, there are passionate staff members who do care about the work that is being done. If you can work here you can work anywhere.

-Inputting information on HIFIS: Book-ins/outs; information on clients.
-Dispensing of medication, logging time.
-Some household duties: Laundry, sweeping/mopping. 
-Working with clients: Waking them up in the morning, talking to establish goals leading to referrals , some budgeting. 
-Reporting to management.
-Working with medical professionals and OPS.
-Generally speaking, keeping peace in the building, establishing a good relation with clients.

I worked at the Montreal Road facility and was very satisfied with my job. Most co-workers are nice, management is supportive and encouraging. Some clients are more difficult to work and moody with but in general they are okay. The payment is acceptable. Sometimes your shift is not peaceful and you may expect foods and drinks to be thrown and people yelling, but if you take these as a chance to learn human thinking and behavior then you should be fine. 

Staff here do a phenomenal job supporting some of the most vulnerable people in Ottawa. They are literally the first responders in too many critical and life and death incidents to count, yet are paid extremely poorly for their hard work and the stress they experience. Management, on the other hand, treat themselves handsomely, yet many managers there are arrogant, under-qualified, and lacking in professionalism, which shows in how poorly they support the staff in the important work they do.

I was offered a contract and signed expecting a raise and benefits however afterwards I was told I don't get a raise or benefits because you need a 6 month contract for that and my contract was only written for 5 months and 30 days. If you're wondering what the actual wage is after taxes and union dues it's $11 an hour. Good place to start and build experience since almost every new hire quits but leave asap for pretty much anywhere else. 

They will send all new staff to the wolves with minimal training and with incompetent security that won't respond to radio requests half the time. The only good thing about this job is the clients and getting to make a difference, but if you care too much management and HR will fire you anyways. Decent starter job in harm reduction because they go through staff like crazy so will hire anybody but find a better workplace that pays better ASAP.

This is a great shelter to work at for experience. Harm reduction-based, the clients are absolutely amazing. However, VERY POORLY PAID as a front-line worker. If you miss a shift you may end up needing a bed at Shepherds of Good Hope, even their staff of over 20 years live pay cheque to pay cheque. Very little support from upper management, assistant managers and program managers are very supportive and help you achieve your goals.
