Shignanski Construction

My time at Shignanski Construction's was just perfect. I have had upwards of 10 employers over the last 32 years in construction. Shignanski were by far the most professional and organized management team I have encountered.

As far as the team and company events go, I am still friends with both my fellow carpenter and project manager.

I worked there for a short time of 2 months as I had to move out to the west end of the city. In that time, I seen coffees, donuts, and 2 company events of food & drinks and a get together.

The main project manager I worked with was very experienced and encouraging. The other PM was the safety ambassador there and was also quite encouraging. Nothing but positive feelings for my time worked at shignanski Constructions.

It is my belief that the key to their success is that they have an entire team of office staff that match the number of carpenters. Back then I was 1 of 9 carpenters with a role focussed on Finishing Carpentry and Cabinet Joinery Millwork.


All in all it's a ok place to work. They pay you vacation time on every paycheck and you are entitled to 14days/y but you are always free to take a day or few days off with a proper written notice given. Wage wise, they are not going to underpay you, they do a detailed interview but they never advertise job postings, it's always some connection in question. Work is always fast paced during summer and verry slow during the winter(working 5-6h/day for like 3-4days/week). They do not pay your overtime, they bank it and you can take a time off of it but it's 1ot/h for 1h time off which is not fair exchange.
Big minus in this company is that employees are constantly competing between them, there is no seniority system implemented and as soon as cold days comes they start to lay off workers.
You have to have your own transportation and tools as the job sites are constantly changing, sometimes even during the day. They somehow pay for the mileage but that's only if job is more than 50km away from the shop

Most of the carpenters are good people to work with

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Being micro managed . Most carpenters can achieve the same results with a different process . At times your told how to complete the task at hand rather than allowing you to decide

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They attempt to make it a big family dynamic but fail to do so . There are office people and field people 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Showing up on site and setting up your own tools and make a plan for the day or meet up with your foreman and have the job explained to you

Shignanski Construction really prides themselves on offering a fun, secure work environment with an emphasis on quality. The variety of tasks on any give day keeps me on my toes and feeling engaged. This company has helped my provide for my family for a long time now and I am very grateful for that. As a small-medium sized company, there is no one here that is here for a free ride. We all work hard and we work together as a team to ensure the customers have a great experience. So if you are looking for a place to grow, learn, be challenged and make some lifelong relationships along the way, Shignanski is a great place to work!

They have no system to develop apprentices or new journeyman.

They throw into jobs by yourself, whether you are ready or not and then blame it on your skill level instead of their lack of employee development.

They have poor communication, considering it is a company of 10-15 employees.

They do not appreciate hard working employees.

I currently work at Shignanski in the sales department. This place is a lot of fun to work and a place where I enjoy getting up to come to work everyday. My co-workers are down to earth and a lot of fun and they keep me on my toes! We work on a wide variety of projects which keeps the day to day very interesting and I am always learning something new. If you are looking for a fun, fast paced environment that provides a work life balance, this is the place for you.

I have worked at Shignanski Construction since 2009 and I have no intentions on leaving.
This is the best job I have ever had and I consider the people that I work with my close friends. The culture of the company and its people is respectful, inviting and overall positive.
Wages are fair and they consistently provide employee reviews to help grow the company with the employees future in mind.

its a good company to work for but with some major problems like:
-constant pressure to finish as much as possible in shortest time
-very competitive work structure
-no job security as a new carpenter (they hire you for the season and lay off as soon as winter comes)
-questionable safety culture
-project managers and supervisors are very egoistic type of persons

Shignanski is a great place to work if you enjoy work-life balance, healthy relationship with colleagues, and challenging yet rewarding projects. I've been with the company for almost ten years and have grown so much professionally. The culture here is help first so never afraid of asking questions! 

Shignanski has been an awesome company to work with. I'm able to push forward and grow with the company which has always been a goal of mine. I feel heard when I have a solution and get rewarded for doing a good job. I recommend working at Shignanski Construction.
