Sky Cafe

This review is for Sky Cafe, the airline catering service in Canada, not the catering service in the UK.  This review specifically refers to the Halifax location.

The Commissary Agent position requires the cleaning and loading of airline trolleys for snacks and drinks on-board flights departing from Halifax on specific carriers.  The workplace is cramped and unorganized, with messages about changing requirements from the airlines being hidden on a whiteboard behind an open door.

The employees hate each other, often threatening violence and engaging in screaming matches.  Management considers this situation normal, and as they schedule their workers for 60-hour weeks and have a high turnover, this may be true.  This company took on another contract despite being unable to manage the contract they had.  They pay slightly more than minimum wage.

The building and lot are cramped, and the sewer vents right next to the office door.  The company is too small to afford a better building, but chooses to focus on that rather than the problems that they can fix, such as toxic employee relations and understaffing.

Management and Supervisors tends to throw a lot of the work onto other workers, having supervisors leave early while workers stay overtime. Overwhelmed with work, a lot of the time you will be asked to stay extra hours and return home the next day regardless of the amount of time you worked the day before. The hardest part of the job was juggling the assigned work to finishing on time or you would have to stay extra hours to finish it. During the evening shifts (3:30pm - 11:30pm) we are expected to only work 8 hours but most of the time you will be held back to finish the work. Lunch is not paid for, so in order to get a full 8 hrs you would have to say an extra 30 minutes. The most enjoyable part, were the hand full of hard working employee's who would always be willing to help you no matter what they would be doing. A lot of the company supervisors delegate most of the labor work to other employees as they would go home leaving the labor for someone else. I learned how to manage my time, and understand that you can't finish everything in one shift. I learned to do as much as I can as best as I can.

My first impression of the Company was that it is a fast paced environment, which was quite intimidating at first but it ended up being fun once I got the hang of it.

My first day, I was given access to online training which explained what the company does coast to coast and how I fit into operations. Then the next 2 weeks I was training while working, it was a on-the-job kind of learning process. It helped a lot because I learned the right processes from the start.

There's a lot of information thrown at you but luckily the HR helps with everything and answers all of your questions...even the RAIC transport application, which took me forever! 

Management is also pretty nice, they definitely set the standard straight from the get-go. The culture, is all about positive vibes and helping one another meet targets daily. That's why I like it here.

Sky Cafe in YYC is a horrible place to work. Stay away. Management has misleading intentions at the best of times and malicious ones at the worst. The entire operation is disorganized, and inefficient. 
Terrible work culture, unreal turnover rates. Over the time I was there we lost 20+ to attrition. I’m not kidding. Equipment constantly breaks down and training is non-existent. They don’t care for your safety, all they want are cheap employees to run their mess of an operation. Only good thing are my fellow coworkers, however many have already left due to the shoddy management. The place is chronically understaffed and was in disarray every day I worked. If management didn’t care what business did I have there? None. 
Glad I got out.

I work at the Kelowna location with Sky Café. Having just retired, I still wanted to keep busy and this was a great opportunity.  I work during the winter at the warehouse building trolleys and atlas containers for the planes.  We then drive the containers to the plane and load them on/off.  

The management is very supportive and friendly and I love being a part of the industry.  Flight staff and ground crew are always great.

The hardest part of the job is if the airline changes the type of plane coming in.  Then we have to scramble a bit to rebuild for the correct type of trolleys and atlas containers.

One of the worste small bunch of opportunists from western Canada i have ever seen. The bosses are a joke! they keep there jobs simply cause most of them are related to the owner, not because they know what they are talking about. Middle management is the worst i have ever encounter! As a exemple the guy that trained us on how to approach, board and service and aircraft, had ever set foot on air side! He had never really did it himself! Most of the drivers where cool guys, but the rest of them where plain dumb. the turnaround of employees is staggering and now that Air Transat being sold to Air Canada, they will lose the contract at least @ YUL. Don t lose your time with them.

 Poor management at almost all levels,just the GM is doing a good job and keeps this location still alive but otherwise there are some Duty Managers(with some exceptions) underqualified and not suitable for the position. Orientation not existent,you may be guided by someone who just started there two days before you ! That's not a joke! There is no opportunity to grow in this company even if you are a hard worker and you care about your work ,but just if you may be someone's favourite, in this case you may have a skyrocketing career. To put it briefly it's a waste of time and hope working in the SkyCafe YYC , avoid it at all costs and it's underpaid too.

I have been here in the YYZ location for almost 2 years now and in all honesty so far it's been great, coworkers are down to earth and friendly, a very multicultural environment and lots and lots to learn as well.. plus working at Pearson International is a privilege for me.

I'm not sure why the last comment was posted regarding this location the way it was but from the day Sky Cafe started and with the changes made on various staff and upper level early last year everything have become much better, clean and organized, it's outstanding how things have changed now and I feel all of us have a secure job we can rely on.

If you want to work here, you may want to think again. The management is composed of terrible people who take advantage of you right in front of your eyes. There is so much control, favoritism, yelling, and bossing around.
You will never move up if you tell them that you want to and the pay is not worth it.
They overwork you continually and never appreciate your efforts.
Co-workers are just some of the best people but it's unfortunate that we all get taken advantage of.
Overall, very toxic environment that will leave you feeling frustrated and wanting to leave on a daily basis.

- Hours of opporation is pretty random but easy to get use to.
- Work load isn’t overwhelming until charter season or when there is a abscent employee.
- I have learned to manage my time properly as working at the airport for any airline consists of managing your time to the very minute, as well I have learned to be more organized.
- There is a mixed culture at YOW station.
- The hardest part of this job would probably be working in different climates(weather). 
- The most enjoyable part of this job is working with with good people.
