Slegg Building Materials Ltd.

I worked with Slegg's for only half a year, but what I saw in that short time surprised me. I've never worked somewhere so much turnover, hence the title of my review. Even at the smaller location I was at, every month there were countless new people coming and others going. This led to a workplace that felt unstable in building teamwork and success towards accomplishing long term goals. People were let go seemingly spontaneously, sometimes over single minor infractions, others were great employees that must've just been disliked by management, while some with chronically poor performance went unnoticed? It was all just very inconsistent and demoralizing.

Another issue was the glaring inefficiencies that led to a messy unorganized workplace that made it hard to be productive. The stock orders were automated for some insane reason and not based off of what's needed, which meant things being difficult to organize and having to be constantly juggled for safety reasons. The management (immediate and upper) didn't seem to at all appreciate the space, capabilities, or output of the branch. Certain results were demanded, yet any suggestions to improve the OBVIOUS flaws are dismissed. Teams in the yard were starkly undermanned and overworked, while some roles that existed were completely redundant and unnecessary. Not to mention there were large policy changes every so often to adjust to, causing constant confusion and more chaos.

I took the job being promised certain timed advancements, raises and roles, but they were ALL slowly eroded over time, despite exceeding all milestones and even taking on initiative for extra responsibilities. When confronted on this, I just got more promises and no plan. Which meant I knew I couldn't waste anymore time.

Speaking of time. They DO offer overtime which is nice, so if you've got the energy it's great. But it more exists as a mechanism for them to catch up from the bad organization. It's "technically" optional, but I noticed there is an unspoken guilt complex put on employees if you don't work extra and exhaust yourself.

It's a shame because Slegg's is a place that seems to have a lot of potential, and all the resources it needs to reach it. But a combination of inconsistent leadership, bad organization, and disconnect between regional and local management leads to a jaded workplace with a toxic culture that lacks the human element to make it worth putting in any extra energy or effort. From what I've read this seems to be a systemic issue with this company.

It's not ALL bad. The pay, benefits, and overtime are competitive. Not to mention the free food and other small material goodies are nice. Take advantage of it for something short term if it's what you need, but I would be skeptical of making any considerable long term investment.

I am  working at Slegg Cumberland currently and fully enjoy working there. The work is fast paced and interesting. I learn something new everyday (from little things to going away on courses). We continually have Product Knowledge sessions where our suppliers come in an instruct us on their products. The staff, on the whole, all get along and work well together. I have always felt I could go to management with any issues or problems I have. After all the time I have been there, I still look forward to going to work every day. Every day is not sunshine and roses, as with all companies taking over a business, they are going through a learning curve but  overall a great place to work.

Understaffing, strict corporate rules, lack of training

Toxic corporate toe the line masquerading as family based

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Arrive to understaffed store, pick up duties from yesterday's incomplete tasks from yesterday's understaffed shift. Left alone to perform tasks not trained for. Lunch break. More of the same after until shift end. Shift alternates between screaming busy to incredibly boring

This company is a joke!! Management has No respect or good treatment towards their employees of all levels from yard to corporate employees. Big turn over with new employees. This company does NOT do absolutetly nothing to keep good and loyal employees, motivate, train or advance them. No training no support. As about Pay is a pity, expect  $.70 per year!! 
I will advise job seekers  to stay away from this company, only if you really are desperate and looking for job till find something better. You will feel worthless and depressed!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Doing several people’s jobs. Reception, tool repair, local finance, managing front end cashier staff and  cashier.

This is a completely toxic company and I love all the fake reviews they have placed making it seem like some kind of great place to work. They are only out for money and as an employee you are completely replaceable. Management is highly inappropriate and they seem to think it’s ok to send employees explicit pictures of themselves, seriously what is wrong with this place. Disgusting place to be employed.  Good luck to anyone trying to have a career here. 

Great team to work with, makes coming to work enjoyable, busy in the yard and store, great customers, hearing about their projects and knowing that we are helping is a good feeling. Benefits are great, closed every stat day, I’m use to working late shifts and working stat days with previous companies. I was promoted within the company several times. Hard work pays off. 

Slegg lumber was a very boring place to work, your whole day is spent either helping customers, sweeping, or flat stacking lumber piles. All outside. On a slow day, after you've swept all you can and all the lumber piles are flat it can be a long day of waiting in the rain. It was also not the worst place to work, when it was a busy day and it didn't drag on I really enjoyed helping customers and casual talking with contractors while loading supplies.

Were very friendly at first but then it became a place of gossip. It was an "everyone for themselves " atmosphere. Expected you to know how they wanted things done but didn't train you on how to do it. Management were always in bad moods and not supportive. Benefits were good, pay not bad but very negative place to work
