I recently completed a CO-OP placement at Smythe LLP and would highly recommend it to anyone pursuing their CPA designation or looking for CO-OP experience. The firm has a very supportive environment, great people, and a strong culture. There are also many fun work events throughout the year that help build connections across teams.

As a junior in the PrivCo department, you can expect to work on a mix of personal, corporate, and trust tax returns, primarily for clients in the tech and real estate industries. You gain exposure to a variety of files and managers, which allows you to learn a lot in a short amount of time.

Each employee is assigned both a manager and a buddy who provide guidance, coaching, and support throughout their time at the firm.

Busy season hours can be long (Expect 50+ hours/week from February to April), but management is caring and consistently checks in to make sure employees are supported and doing well.

As with any workplace there are busy seasons and tight deadlines, but there is always support to help during these times. Focus on wellness and self care through these busy/stressful seasons.

Company events and social initiatives help ensure a fun, friendly environment for the staff.

Smythe is an amazing company to be a part of. Everyone at the firm is very helpful and resourceful. Everyone is super helpful especially during the busy season.

Ideal location. Heart of downtown.

Tax season and the toxic environment coming from toxic management.

Terrible and blatant favouritism.

Well-organized and clean workplace, well-structured onboarding process, supportive management and team, and welcoming and bright work culture. Clear sense of purpose and responsibilities.

Lots of fun office events and daily refilled coffee and snacks. Ergonomic chairs, standing desks, and adjustable dual monitors.

I truly enjoyed working alongside my peers, managers and partners. 99% of the people are bright and such a pleasure to work with, and Smythe is willing to work with that remaining 1% of not-so-bright employees. Busy season is gruelling, and goes on from Feb trough July. Rest of the year is a piece of cake.

Not a bad place to work; management sometimes doesn't do anything about "bad apples" which can be frustrating. but a good place to grow in experience and advance your career.

It is a good place to work, until you get dragged into some politics playing at the high level. Other than that, it just feels like another firm in public practice. But the size of the firm does limit what it can provide, professionally and compensatorily.
