Sonora Resort

Sonora can be a very busy place with some long workdays and long shifts in at the resort, but the team becomes a tight knit crew and there's a strong Sonora family vibe. Be prepared to work hard but also make some life-long friendships along the way. 
The staff accommodations are great for a camp job with private bedrooms and washrooms shared with just one other person. The staff meals are great and there is always a ton of snacks and food. With the current price of groceries and gas, it's a great way to save money since you really have no expenses while you're there. Tips are paid out basically once a month and vary based on how buy the resort is.
Some of the members of management have been there for several years and if you put your time in over multiple seasons there is definitely opportunity to learn, grow, and move up within the company. 
Certain departments at the resort work longer days and shifts than others; work life balance can really vary depending on which part of the resort you work in. Make sure you make the most of your off time when you're not working and go for a hike, swim in the lake, fly fish in the ponds, and get out on the boats with the guides - this is what it's all about and there are lots of opportunities to enjoy the island if you get out there and do it rather than just hanging out in your room after/before work.

Loved working there, but unfortunately for my department and all the others the tips are dismal for the amount of work you have to do and the cost of the place. They don’t want to raise or enforce their own tip recommendations and group rates. So big group would come spending tens of thousands of dollars and leave zero and I mean zero for the resort staff.  So serves imagine what you make in tips over a week at home and that’s what you’ll get over a whole month at Sonora because it’s all split with every department: dock, house keeping, maintenance, landscaping, servers, kitchen(guest and staff), front desk, etc. Doesn’t leave a lot when there’s 80+ people your splitting with. ( guides and spa make there own... they do well) 

Lovely area to work and the some of the people that work there are awesome. 
Oooo big hint if you go, be nice and friendly to the guides don’t except them to take you fishing if they’ve never even talked to you, they don’t get paid to take you out so treat them in some way if your lucky to go out ex: make them a dinner to go or maybe some $$. Unfortunately most are getting up there in age 40+ only 1 last season was in his 20’s. 

Drinking is allowed don’t be the new person who shows up empty handed on there first set of days. 

My time at Sonora is - to this day - the BEST job I have ever had.

At the time, I was a university student trying to save money and ready for an adventure. Working at Sonora allows you to live nearly rent-free during the entire season, and all your meals are provided. The accommodation is lovely (two suites sharing one bathroom between them) and the food is great! I found the schedule to be very accommodating, and I always knew what my rotation would be. Some days were long and hard, but the beautiful surroundings and team mentality more than made up for the extra hours. 

You get to live and work in one of the most gorgeous places in the world, hone your interpersonal skills with some of the most influential clientele (did I mention getting to meet celebrity guests?!), and work with fun, energetic, hard-working people. What more could you ask for?!

Sonora is a unique place to work since you have to live on island while you're working, along with all of your work colleagues. Of course this comes with some challenges, but overall there is a great Sonora Family vibe while working here and I've made some of my closest friends through my time at Sonora. Being in the wilderness and being able to explore and enjoy the area is one of the biggest perks of the job.

Especially when the resort is busy, we work some really long days, and we hustle. There can be some long stretches of work on the island before days off, but it's a great way to save money, since accommodations and food are provided, and overtime adds up. I have been able to work hard and move up within the company over the course of several seasons, and there is definitely room for growth and development at Sonora if you put the time in and effort.

Great place to work if you enjoy your line of work and are prepared to put in some serious hours.  Awesome team environment  joining a group of like minded individuals to get some pretty immense and satisfying tasks completed. Good place to learn and gain confidence in a  fast paced  environment.  Down time can be very enjoyable as you really can't beat the scenery, and untouched peaceful area. I would say the strongest asset this place has is its people, get ready to make some life long friends. 

The headline says it all. Over worked (10-12 hours day with a MINIUM of 18 days straight, often much longer, as much as 34) and way way underpaid. What you could easily make at a normal fining dining restaurant of this prestige in one 6-8 hour shift is what you make here in a week 84 hour 7 day work week.  Sure, they give you a room and feed you, but Sonora is a remote island with no other establishment or housing rentals so its their only choice for staff and does not at all make up for the lack of pay. Management also has very HIGH expectations, with no appreciation and tend to completely ignore the fact that their employees are over worked to the point of exhaustion. I would avoid this place.

For Resort work, this place takes the cake. Sonora provides great accommodation and staff food plus the employee culture and quality of work is top notch. 
Because of the standard of service Sonora provides to their guests, the work can be tough and your skills will be put to the test, but you will be better for it! 
You'll make tons of friends who will last much longer than just the season. 
It's a great way to earn and save money. It's nice knowing that all departments are involved in the tip pool. 
There are tons of returning staff which says a lot about the company! (Some 17+ seasons)

Yes, the location is really attractive and they told you everything you want to hear to hire you but... In reality, you work hours and hours without break and the wage is not worth it for the amount of work. They ask you more and more but they are not grateful or even kind or even polite. Even the tips weren't great in a 5 stars resort.
When I decided to quit, they tried to put guilt on me, I had and I am still fighting for my money. They still owe me the breaks I never had because they don't tell you at the beginning but for each day they cut off 30 minutes for break even if you don't get them. I never had such a bad work experience. I am still hoping that they will be fair with my hours. 

Working at Sonora was the experience of a lifetime. It's an excellent opportunity to surround yourself with like-minded professionals. Everyone that works at the resort, works hard and has a deep passion for tourism/hospitality. Sonora is a great place to learn a lot about ALL parts of the resort-culture, working closely between all departments.
I have loved my time at Sonora and wish I could stay forever, however there really isn't room for advancement within the Sonora family.

I feel this needs to be said, Sonora is an All Inclusive Resort so tips aren't garenteed with service and gratuities are split amongst All Staff. 

The island is beautiful but it's extremely strict and you aren't allowed to be there at all on your days off. 2 days off after weeks on and you have to spend them traveling on a boat to the main island where you then have to camp or hotel for your days off. 

Not worth it for an experienced FOH, better off getting a job in the city for the summer.
Great for younger kids without anything else going on, worse than working at summer camp, at least you can stay at a camp on your days off.
