It was implied to me CONSTANTLY that I wasn’t doing my job properly when in fact I was never given the full resources to do my job properly, which would have meant hiring an additional staff member. I was not provided with opportunities to enhance my education beyond the occasional refresher on material I was already familiar with. I was not included in key activities which could have helped me be more effective at my role and I was pushed out of certain activities which had traditionally been a part of my role. Many arbitrary decisions being made - the intent to control the flow of information or prevent certain team members from having all the information they need really shows a lack of transparency. I enjoyed working with most of the team members but I needed to work somewhere that my hard work is appreciated, that my value is seen, that my manager advocates for me and provides the necessary resources to do my job.

This was one of the most unprofessional jobs I have ever worked for. Your job security is based off whether you are managements/unions favourite or not. People don’t communicate rather play the blame game. Ministry is constantly in the building and management blames staff for not knowing when proper support and education is not given. The union doesn’t fight for you rather fight whoever’s the presidents favourite. Everyone works with an negative attitude rather than together. Southlake is a beautiful new building that has an advantage from other long term care homes and huge potential for great things but have very poor management/union leaders. Change isn’t for the people who need it rather than the people who want it and that cannot happen without a change in management/union team.

Was once a very pleasant somewhat tolerable environment to work. But nowadays, it is a very toxic environment where the management condescends, picks favorites, gaslights & micromanages/nitpicks & can't ever see the wrong in their doings. The union barely fights for worker's rights despite them taking a reasonable amount of our pay every paycheck for union fees.  Takes forever to receive benefits and until then job security is very low around there.

Majority of the staff are at conflict with one another. Gossiping and backstabbing towards each other, is regular occurrence there as well as constantly causing unnecessary drama and toxicity to the workplace. No peace of mind given on any day.

Wouldn't recommend this workplace to anybody!

What is the best part of working at the company?
Best place to work. From residents to management and regular staffs. I have had a great experience so far.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Parking. I paid for parking and I have to make like 10 minutes walk down to the building on regular days except on weekends and or anytime from 2pm.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Diverse culture. People from different backgrounds and believes. We all have our differences but still work as a team.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Day shifts are always busy. However; there are tools to use for some difficult tasks. Which makes it a lot easier..

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working here was not easy at the beginning,  but after knowing my residents, I am comfortable in every thing I do.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
As the morning nurse,  I am supposed to know everything that is happening on my floor and that is so stressful for me.


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is sometime stressful because of so much gossip and cultures are respected.


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy with medication administration   , wound dressing , and not having the time for break.

Southlake nursing and PSW staff are phenomenal, but overworked, stressed and feel unappreciated.  A honest "thank you" never happens, even when staff have worked multiple double shifts all week and are visibly exhausted.  Leadership has trouble saying "no" to family/resident demands that are unrealistic and expect staff to routinely miss breaks or work unpaid OT to meet backbreaking demands with no payoff. 
Threats of discipline is used by managers as motivation. Unfriendly managers, sit in offices behind closed doors. Shady behaviors from janitorial  staff.   Housekeeping friendly and go out of way to help PSWs.

I myself found it was a good place to start. Unfortunately, as the years past I found the job environment slowly declining. I was in dietary for the last 2 years, the other few months as Resident Assistant. This job was very rewarding in regards helping the residents. Otherwise, I wouldn’t apply here unless you love the clients. 

A great working environment...loved tending to the residents and families...amazing co-workers who shared in the same passion of caring for the elderly..working individually or as a group has many benefits and gives you access to others techiques and knowledge

Residents are lovely.  Love to bring smiles to their faces. 

Staff are another thing.  Everyone at conflict with eachother.  Mr Ford offering the psws only the 3.00 extra per hour, noting them as healthcare heros has only made conflict more intense between different departments.

Stressful place to work.  Culture is unpleasant. 

It's a great place with passionate workers devoted to best practice and people’s wellbeing during their time at the facility. Working with  intelligent, perceptive, and compassionate coworkers dedicated to their job. Excellent communication between staff and openness of ideas.
