Like any job, if you work there long enough you will have good and bad experiences. A lot of it depends on the employee and their work ethic. Yes SPIKE can be rigid about their policies and rules, but as a unionized work force, they need to be. 
I would urge anyone reading bad reviews to look at if the person is currently employed or not. I see many from people who were let go because they weren't doing their job or didn't have the right disposition for this line of work. I have always found that SPIKE has an excellent balance of caring for their clients and employees but at the end of the day, the clients well being needs to be a priority. 
It worries me that bad reviews can have negative effects on current employees. I know of someone who was afraid to speak up about mistreatment from a co worker because their reviews said that management doesn't listen. I have personally never found that to be true. During my (almost) 10 years here, I have been supported in so many ways. SPIKE has given me many opportunities to further my education and provided a work environment where I have been able to advance based on my education, work experience and performance. I have also been supported personally. Even though they are a larger company, I have always felt like I was seen by management and even the director would notice when I was doing a good job. 
The benefits also include mental health support which is really important in this field of work. 

The work environment at S.P.I.K.E breeds hostility. Poor management and sub par training fuels the disconnect between employee and proper residential care.

My experience working in one of their homes was almost entirely negative, save from the residents themselves which are wonderful.

Expect little support from supervisors (if you can even find one or have one answer their phone). If something goes wrong, the company will not take any responsibility, but blame it on under trained staff.

The company preys and thrives on low cost, foreign workers that are in desperate need of a job. English is rarely spoken in the homes. Be aware of this if you are a newcomer to Canada.

The hardest part of the job was seeing the residents live in filthy conditions will little food to eat.

Best part of the job was watching residents have fun and smile.

I learned that even in non-profit organizations, it's run like a business with maximum cost reduction VS resident care. In other words, the company would rather save money than care for their residents.

I worked for almost 8 years and moved all the way to the top.  involved with the Union involved with the management but favoritism always trumped Superior work. The fight for resident security support and advocacy didn't go all the way to the top. The executive branch took money to improve their office spaces when the residential houses suffered from structural and functional improvements. You stay because you care but the ones that are the coordinators are too busy hiding themselves in their offices or running errands for their personal use and creating our environment of double standards.if you care you'll stay if you find out what's going on you'll fight for change get burned out be stomped on and leave. It's a sad truth but this goes on in a lot of agencies around the city.

S.P.I.K.E does not care about their staff, particularly senior staff. The company would sooner hire newer, cheaper staff rather than pay their senior staff properly. This has a direct effect on client care.

The work environment is hostile and does not foster teamwork. It's every worker for themselves. Don't dare speak up or express concerns or the assistant director will target you.

Not sure how this company gets away with their policies and practices but sooner or later it will catch up to them. Even the families of the clients aren't happy. TAKE CARE OF YOUR STAFF AND LISTEN TO THEM FOR ONCE - TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT YOURSELVES AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

I recently ended my working relationship with SPIKE Inc.  In my time I found working for SPIKE to be very rewarding and fulfilling. SPIKE also supported and guided me to continue my education while in their employment. SPIKE offered and paid for a course that I found to be 
very beneficial. 
I loved my working with and getting to know the clients. They are all unique and funny in thier own way.

I was very lucky to have made and kept the bonds that I had made with my clients.

Worked here for a few years as a residential support worker. I did not enjoy my time working for SPIKE. It was unprofessional, disorganized and the employees are not treated with respect. The clients are suffering.

There are far better organizations to work for in this city. Go ahead and apply, and you will see what's going on there and leave. 

The turnover rate there is staggering. Can't keep staff for a reason.

All I do is to ensure that the residents receive quality support to enable them make a good life.  I get along with people and enjoy a productive and team spirited work place.

I have learnt that good communication brings about cordial employer - employee relationship that foster mutual respect.

I enjoy seeing the residents happy; it tells me that we are making positive impact on them.

The clients are the only reason people stay at Spike. The coordinators and supervisors have no say in how they run things, it is up to the Assistant Director. She will also never answer the phone if there are problems. Spike does not care about the staff and if they dare say anything bad about the company, they are targeted by the assistant director.
Until she leaves, don't apply.

Terrible organization that should be investigated for neglecting clients. Various incidents occurred and no one other than myself addressed or documented them. Clients are left un supervised. Management isn’t reliable and does not have an educational background or expertise working with vulnerable people with disabilities. Please do not leave your loved ones in this organization!


I worked as a residential support worker for two months. The job itself wasn't bad but the supervisor was a very rude and negative person. She never treated staff with respect and was even rude to clients, some of which are severely handicapped and shouldn't have to deal with a person like that. Until she leaves nobody should apply here.
