On the production floor, many senior employees have a chip on their shoulder and and unwillingness to train. Often times giving attitude, harassment and abuse to new hires who are struggling to and trying to acclimate to the position. If supervisors don't like you, you will know it and they will fail to help you train to become better. Oftentimes treated like a club of discrimination. Management is generally aware of the behavior but is afraid to discipline in fear that their only knowledgeable yet under paid and underappreciated employees will leave and will look the way on certain behaviors. They will have unqualified supervisors, who have no actual knowledge of the job, give reviews without even asking trainers for input, resulting in insulting reviews. Even had the CEO briefly tell me that under reviewing is normal and that he will explain, only to never follow up. Most times, management is only reactionary and rarely proactive. Had hours cut, forced layoff for a week only for them to decide to force Saturdays right after. Been forced to do work beyond my title without pay and had management compare me to specific people when asked about it. 

In some departments, the morale is terribly low and can be felt easily and pulls you down.

There ARE some employees within the company that I have found pleasant and I enjoyed the work itself. There is much to learn but you need to have the right people with the patience to teach. Benefits and pension are good but

A typical day at work involves trying to patch together set ups done by certified set up mechanics who just don't care. Shortly after starting your runs on your assigned machines, they fall apart, parts go bad, machines stop running The rest of your day is spent trying to piece things back together all while being hounded by a supervisor as to why its not running yet. That "why?" could be because although they say they have a one of a kind training program, they really dont train. You shadow someone who has only been there just over a year and learn from his mistakes. After many years, Ive watched many new employees come and go. Most leave due to the amount of work expected. Machine operator also includes set ups, repairs,making tooling for the machines, material handling, janitorial and quality control and on 2 of the 3 shifts there is zero quality control in the building.

Employee moral is low as you aren't permitted to talk to anyone else as you work. If you are seen chatting even for just a few minutes you get told to move along and do something productive. There really aren't very many happy people in the building until the bell goes at the end of your shift. Everyone is very happy to be leaving.

This was the most toxic environment I ever worked in. Employees constantly reporting each other for no good reason, or to get ahead. Senior employees refuse to train newer employees, securing their status as untouchable by management and preventing you from advancing. Complaints about senior employees go unheard.

Female employees are separated from male employees and are non-existent on the production floor, instead being regulated to sorting and office positions so they don't "distract" the male production workers.
 
 They lose at least 2-3 employees a month and management will use every excuse in the book to not give you a raise. Stating wage is minimum and the hours make little sense. Shifts are 9 hours in length. 45 hours a week. There is a 2.5 hour overlap between midnight shift and day shift and a 1.5 hour overlap between midnight shift and afternoon shift.

On the positive side, the benefits were excellent and the company contributes a percentage of your pay to your pension as well as shift premiums given as a percentage of your wage instead of a flat rate but those are the only positives I can come up with.

One of the worst managed companies I ever worked for, attendance is all that's cared about, tenured staff members can get away with anything, up to and including basic theft in the form of no work for hourly wage. 

Absolutely no work life balance, no schedule or structure, everything is late or in some different process also late that you can never achieve the due dates due to how poorly the process flow is controlled in all stages. 

Because the work atmosphere is that of do as little as possible to keep your Job, finger pointing and bus throwing are the normal, do not trust anyone that works there they are worried about them and only them you'll never be more than a scape goat for a tenured employee. 

If you do decide to give it a try, just know that most new hires are fired or quit before 30 days. It's a revolving door policy. 

Training is none existent, you will spend more time looking for the person ment to train you, then they will spend time training you 

They are constantly looking for new people as the turnaround rate is high. That tells you a lot about the place.  It is very noisy and cramped when production is in full gear. Toxic environment with lots of grumpy men and women.  Long work day with minimal compensation.  You are eligible for retirement benefits after one year of employment ( this was the first place I heard of this nonsense). If you happened to work in an area called secondaries you will work more than anyone else in the building. None of the senior employees work there. This is where all the sorting and packing is done and it is the busiest and noisiest area in the whole building.
Many of the machines need upgrading or replacing but they expect you to work magic with outdated and broken down equipments.  The lunchroom is the same room used as the locker room so it is dirty and filled with smelly work boots.  The washroom always smell like sewer, strong smell of methane gas. 

A standard day begins with a review of raw material that needs to be ordered for the factory and an assessment of raw material open and on order with our suppliers. Immediate concerns regarding non-stock materials are reviewed and resolved. A production meeting walkthrough is undertaken to better grasp the position of the facility with other supervisors and managers. Learning based around supplying and recognizing negatives in the system as generated by inter-company demand and scheduling needs. Working directly with our scheduling and planning department, engineering and production, as well as the International Manager of Freight and Logistics for larger steel purchases. The most difficult part of the position is adjusting the schedule to meet customer demand as the position runs as essentially a third party. The most enjoyable part of the job is the interdepartmental relations and being able to work as an effective team to accomplish goals and meet customer and facility needs.

Working at SPIROL has been the best thing I have done. The company is strong financially and a leader within the industry. In Canada, management are fair and easy to work with and for. You are compensated for the experience and work you do. They are not shy in giving raises on a regular basis. 
During COVID shut downs, the company did the utmost for the employees in granting a two weeks paid leave to care for and take care of any personal issues related to this pandemic. There was no layoff or furloughs. Hours were adjusted but everyone continued working.
The interaction between areas of the plant is built on working together attitude, keeping the end goal in sight which is satisfying customers needs and requirements. 
The social events carried out throughout the year are wonderful. From lunches on Chinese New Year to ice cream social event in summer to Cinco de Mayo Mexican Fiesta get together. 
Finally, if you have the opportunity to apply, I encourage everyone to do so. 




I worked at Spirol for a year and there was huge turnover in that time - especially in management - which made it go from a reasonably happy place to one I dreaded going to. Anyone with any knowledge kept their cards close to their vests, almost completely unwilling to help me learn or thrive - their job security! There were at least four legit psychopaths in my area and they made every shift a perilous nightmare for newer workers. I loved the first 3 months there, I hated the last 9. I would never recommend anyone work here.

The workplace is clean . Safety is strictly adhered to . management is very knowledgeable about all processes and details going right up to the president . the president is very involved and familiar with all the workers. I find the interaction refreshing . The environment is very good. and I would recommend this company to anyone I would gladly return .

First of all, Spirol had it's moments. There are some good people there and the workplace has potential.

But some management play favorites. Some decisions make no sense. Pay is average at best, and if you want to watch someone cry about Tariffs, ask for a raise. The tears are almost real.

I worked alongside a toxic person that management protects. After 6 years of seeing no change I left. I guarantee you he's still there. That's Spirol.
