I am a counsellor for a Outpatient 6-week Day Treatment Program.  A typical day would come into work get things set up for the client's, food and drink, and get material ready for the day's session. I prepare for a 1:1 session with a client if it is scheduled for that day. Management is incredible at St. Leonard's.  You have opportunity to advance and grow within the company, depending on what role you are looking to advance in. I really enjoy my job, and the services we offer at St. Leonard's Day Treatment Program. We have a great team of counsellors and support workers that do an amazing job every day, and leave with a smile on our faces. My job does not feel like work, it is fun and also it is important service we provide for people trying to get their life back, and learn how to focus more on day to day instead of getting their next fix or drink.  Change is a process, it takes time, hard work, and practice!!!

Job description/posting didn't quite match the work actually done, would have liked to have been more involved. The free training and certifications received were great bonuses. Lots of sitting and admin work, interacting with clients coming in and out of the facility. Learned a lot about trauma informed care, crisis management and the justice system. Culture was very welcoming, staff was friendly and talkative and everyone wanted to help. Hardest part of the job was the overnight shifts, especially if you had to do them alone. As a female sometimes it felt a bit unnerving. Overall a great starting point into justice and crisis based work if you want to get into the field. 

I was in the HR department covering a maternity leave and looked after all the day to day HR functions. I learned to do many HR tasks since it was a stand alone position. I also interacted with all the departments within the agency. Management was great and the workplace culture was very pleasant. The hard part of the job that I had no training b/c the person before me had already left. The most enjoyable part was the work experience that I gained. I also enjoyed meeting new people within the agency as it was a good experience.  

I would recommend this agency to those starting out needed work experience. Overall a great place to work.

Coworkers are great. Moving up in the company is possible if you want it.

The youth can be a lot to handle.

Diverse and fair, most youth workers are friendly and accommodating.

Encouraging youth with different needs to become a successful in family life and in the community while detailing their everyday life.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Wonderfully, highly skilled frontline staff. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Client service for many disordered individuals in residential settings can be very stressful.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It depends on the department you are working. The rapport between staff and management and clients makes all the difference when working in the social service field.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Very non growth oriented. Encourages overly punishing mindset

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The fear of reprimand for making mistakes. Also the lack of clarity in expectations.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
High turn over. Very little efficient supervision

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Dealing with clients and being unable to point them towards any meaningful direction

The average work day was very unpredictable. Staff would need to be prepared for clients on drugs, promiscuos activity between clients and aggresive behaviour towards staff and other clients. Staff assisted with finding clients jobs, a place to live continuing education, social/life skills.

What I learned most from this job is working in crisis setting, making quick decisions and learning form the clients struggles.

Dealing with lies to cover themselves

Depends on who you talk to and their role

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very uncomfortable based on decisions changing daily to suit particular needs

It has been an amazing experience working for such an amazing agency, very supportive leadership team and colleagues, a rewarding career with great advancement opportunities! If you love helping people you will love this agency! So happy I chose to come to this agency and broaden my career.

If diversity/inclusion in your workplace matters to you, don’t work here. Management acts like ensuring our work considers the unique needs of marginalized populations is a burden. Most staff act annoyed by any mention of race/gender/sexuality issues (especially race) — we work in social services so this stuff is important! Now that I’m working somewhere that prioritizes equity, I’d never tolerate a workplace like this again.
