Working at stokes had its challenges, particularly due to poor management and unrealistic expectations from the head office. The focus on sales metrics felt disconnected from actual customer behavior, with sales goals often set so high they were nearly impossible to achieve. Inventory control was chaotic — some shipments included excessive stock, making it unmanageable to organize.

The lack of proper product training for staff was frustrating, especially given the high expectations. The salary is low. As a manager or assistant store manager, you’re entitled to 5 sick days and 2 weeks of paid vacation annually. While I couldn’t imagine staying long-term, this role could serve as a decent survival job or a stepping stone to gain experience in retail operations.

The Stokes company has an excellent focus on customer service and store presentation. When you're working with the right co-workers the day passes easily and tasks such as restocking and cleaning seem less monotonous. 
In Management there seems to be a considerable amount of turnover and confusion. In five years my location went through 5 managers and almost as many District Managers. Also a number of store policies would change (particularly regarding  merchandising and store plan) with little notice to the actual managers and staff that had to enact these new policies.
The hardest part of the job was managing the stock. Since there is no control at store level, and head office has little regard for store size and available space, shipments were often frustrating and stressful

Work life consists of customer service, operating cash register, making price tags and doing inventory if you're a stock associate.  Salary is entry level, so minimum wage.  Like, most retail business, they don't promote within, they hire someone outside to fill management positions so don't be looking forward to getting ever promoted.  Also, expect to be working 15-20 hours a week, sometimes 5 or 10.  Management was nice to work with, they are very friendly and helpful when you have lots of questions.  Your daily life is what I mentioned before, just customer service, operating cash register, making price tags/price changes, and managing stock if you're a stock associate.  There's always something to do in this store.

Chitchatting with my customers…very satisfying finding the perfect item to complete their purchase

Not being able to find that perfect object

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Diverse young people that I work with…interesting interacting with 20 ish year olds when I am 61…different vibe… the customers make the whole day

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Helping customers with their inquiries about our products,running the purchase thru,light housekeeping and maintaining a neat tidy store,and stocking the shelves

i was hired at stokes as a part time student (management knowing i was in high school). from there i was immediately hired and was working 25+ hours a week while in school. this was the most unorganized  store  i’ve ever been in and management was atrocious. managers would talk poorly about their own employees behind their backs and give bad jobs to the ones they didn’t like, eg unloading boxes. i quit after nearly a year because one of the managers cussed me out over the phone for trying to call in sick. please avoid at all costs this place was the worst decision i have ever made. 

The culture is fine, though it can suffer if you have a bad manager. My first manager made work highly enjoyable and she was very kind but my second manager was extremely critical and only cared about the numbers of sales you were doing. 

The way that sales run can be frustrating and confusing and be prepared to deal with customers who want you to break down exactly how they work. 

It can be decent, however. But again, depending on managers, you can be called the day before or day of and told that you're now on the schedule for the next day or whatever. It makes it very difficult to have a good balance.

While I worked there I would be working cash and maintaining cleanliness alongside one or two other employees. While I was there, management was laid back and I got decent hours. After I left, management changed and later on fired an employee who I had worked with, with no explanation at all, and blacked out things on the record of employment they gave to them. New management seems to only want to hire middle aged people and had no interest in rehiring me even though old management had said they'd be very willing to hire me for the next holiday season.

I was an assistant buyer. My boss was the director of a category & we met at the interview with the HR person. I will never forget this boss & the other ‘manager’s in this department it was a good experience . I have learned to manage Communications between  stores & the head office as well as subordinate buying tasks in retail. 

A typical day at work could involve many things such as customer service, stocking shelves, receiving and checking shipments and/or changing visual presentations. I learned a great many things at this job. I learned how to effectively manage my time, properly handle upset or frustrated customers, and how to step up when leadership was needed. The management at stokes was the best I have ever had, the manager knew how to play to employees strengths and encouraged employees to work on their weaknesses.

The most enjoyable part of job was the great team, manager had no idea what was going on. Employees basically ran the store. Head office has no clue what goes on in the stores, they need to be present more and listen to store employees. We had great customers, but lousy products.
Very frustrating not to be heard by head office when you are trying to provide great customer service for a lousy product.
