A typical day at work starts off with debriefing with the staff that was in before on the mood in the home. Getting instructions for what needs to happen next. From what they tell me its my job to analysis in real time the mental state of each client and figure out how to help them out the best, whether that be leaving them alone, or speaking about an incident that might have just occurred, or rewarding and encouraging them for good behavior. Once I have done that I say hello to each client I check all doors or exits to insure safety. I then start working with the clients with the clients. Whether that be arranging their scheduling so I can drive them to a friends home, negotiating curfews, to a extra curricular activities. Once the activities for the night have been organized I take action either by driving them or arranging transportation. I then depending on the shift will start a meal I then cook, set the table; eat with the clients then we will clean up as a group. Again that requires me to organize tasks, delegate and follow through making sure that they are completed. After the meal depending on the shift we might do an activity like play outside, arts and crafts or movie time, Then I get all the clients off to bed depending on the age some can get themselves for bed other require assistance. Usually around bed time the other staff will come in and I will then debrief them on the moods and attitudes of the clients how they were through out the day and triggers that I observed. I've learned from this job to never stop learning, I am constantly challenged by a client if a client is yelling and screaming at you it can be difficult but the key is knowing your client knowing how to deal with them you can only do that by being observant, communicating well and being non judgmental. The most enjoyable part of my job is constantly being able to learn, being challenged to adapt at a moments notice I enjoy a fast-pasted pressure filled work environment.

Storey Homes is great. Based on previous reviews I will have to disagree with some. I've been with this company long enough to know that they do care for their employees. Some new staff comes in and expect to sit on their phones and not contribute to anything and expect when working with kids  from the Child Welfare System, it's going to be easy. Any where you work, whether it's being a care provider or staff, you will have to face a stressful environment especially in a group home or foster home setting. Storey Homes is great and I will continue to work for them. Stop being negative, because you have to  work. Not all homes are the same, so you have to understand it's not going to be perfect all the time. When you just finish from college or university, don't expect a 80000 dollars salary..Be passionate about what you do and love your job. Stop complaining and stop making a company look bad because you cannot handle certain situations or people. Speak up and give feedback directly, so the company can make changes.

The training was practically non-existent. While you do your official “in class” training, you barely get any training as to what to actually do during your shifts. However, with a very low pay rate for the job, you get 24 hour shifts (mine always got double or tripled due to staff shortage), with 8 of those hours being unpaid because you’re meant to be sleeping, yet are still at work. You never quite know what kind of shift you’ll be having; one day you might end up with a kid lighting the house on fire while the next there will be next to nothing to do. There aren’t any actual breaks, and depending on the house care provider, you might even end up working shifts alone with 6 children in the house, so little to no support. 

Overall a great experience. Great Pay. My Supervisor was the absolute best (KM) - She allowed me to debrief, vent and gave constructive feedback. The owner is such a jolly person and actually care about the children and youth. Just be on your pees and cues. Like most agencies they are affiliated with CAS and will follow through with any necessary actions if CAS sees it fit. All in all you are there for the children and youth and they teach you as much as you are there to assist them. I enjoyed my team and my clients.. we were one big happy family !

Storey Homes was a great company to be a part of.  They are truly in it for the right reasons and care deeply about the children they take care of.  The support for Supervisors and Directors was also fantastic, a positive and upbeat work culture with you felt like you were part of a team.  Life direction took me somewhere else, would love to return if I had the opportunity.

It's an okay starter job, but get your experience and leave as soon as something else opens up. This company will walk all over you if you let them. They will have you driving the kids around in your car and not pay you any gas money. The rate of pay will never allow you to advance in your life. The kids are the only reason the job is worth it. If you manage to connect with your group of kids, the job is much easier. Overall, Get your experience and start applying to other jobs. 

It was a nice place to work, although you’d be doing a lot of work for little pay. You couldn’t have much of a social life due to taking over for the foster parent. Group homes would have competition with each other, where one would try to be better than the other, which caused a toxic work environment. Management had favouritism, as some staff would be taken out to dinner and others wouldn’t. 

The kids were great to be around and some staff were friendly. The downside was the little pay and that some staff were more interested in drama and talking badly about the kids than doing their job. Management gave the impression that they cared about staff's mental health but they don't.

You will never be valued at this company unless you are at the top of it. And trust me you don’t want to be there either. 
The ideology of the place is backwards. 

I really loved working with the supervisor there at the time. I think the management has changed now. The youth there were pleasant and the foster parents were quite supportive.
