Sukis Salon and Spa

As a coordinator, my day typically starts with opening up the Salon, checking voicemail, counting the float, etc. We greet clients and guide them to the change-rooms; we proceed to offer them a beverage and inform the stylists of his/her arrival. We schedule and if necessary reschedule appointments for hair and spa services with multiple service providers. We check clients in and out, ensuring they are charged the correct prices. We assist with retail sales, and promote our products and brand. I learned a lot about the beauty industry at this company, and was exposed to how exciting it an be from a creative stand-point. Suki's has a very high-end vibe; yet we prioritize the highest level of customer service, nothing less than excellent will be tolerated. Importance is placed on professionalism, poised look and body language, clear friendly communication,  and ability to multi-task and problem solve on-the-spot. The staff are truly talented and amazing; it really is a Family. There are always events, or classes or work-shops that help to bring the studios together and build the brand. The hardest part of my job was dealing with difficult, high-maintenance client requests, scheduling conflicts and there are often issues with the booking software. Transportation to and from work was primarily public b/c there is no affordable place to park your vehicle at certain locations. As far as the management goes, being honest... not all are who I would have nominated for Management, but it really depends on the location and area of expertise. The founder Suki, her son (current CEO) and their General Manager are an amazing group of people that will continue to steer this company successfully into the future. Some of the brighter moments included the opportunity to be extras in a film this past year, as our salon was rented out for a movie set; Suki's has been featured in several films over the years. Suki's is very in-touch with the community and promoting hair and beauty as an art form, their apprenticeship program is like none-other; and they specialize in precision, Sassoon-style cut/styling techniques. You will never receive a better shampoo ANYWHERE!

Very high end vibe which is what i liked about the salon I was apprenticing at. all the stylists working there were very nice and kind. The management are alright too. However, i lost a lot of motivation when i found out the pay scale even for stylist was so low (near minimum wage) which I found very shocking. Some of the stylist seemed like they were struggling financially. However, they are all passionate people. I overall enjoyed working there. One thing is that they sometimes have too many apprentices on the floor, so often you find yourself having a hard time finding something to do. It's important to make sure you commit only the hours you can commit to. don't say you can do full-time when you have other commitments and you just want to try out the industry then just work part-time. What i concluded was that to be successful at Suki's will likely take a lot of passion as it's a challenging but rewarding career (no financially it seems). So it can't be for the money. You will get back aches, tired feet, high maintenance clients. You need to be able to gab (talk to your clients, basically as a low-paid therapist). Everyone seems to respect the founder of Suki's. She an amazing women.

I worked at this company for awhile and have come to realize they are very greedy. They underpay their staff like crazy and find any loophole around paying them for anything if they don’t have to. They make so much money off their staff, each person alone brings in more then $10,000-$15,000 a month. That is a lot of money for one person to bring in and yet they get paid basically minimum wage. Long as the company makes money, they don’t care what their staff makes. You can barely get time off because they book you solid and don’t want to lose money while your gone. It is even hard taking two days off for a long weekend. You are book so full and they are constantly understaff which makes it very difficult to manage. It’s not fair to book you that full with no help when the juniors are completely empty and can take clients. If you don’t trust your juniors with clients they you should have them on the floor. It’s not fair to them or the clients. If you all you care about is money, you shouldn’t run a business that is so personal. The hair industry is very personal and all about your relationship with the clients and should not be treated like a factory.

I was working in the a well established salon  10 years , went through , Pivot point , Aveda , Goldwell , Redken training I was still not completely feel confident.
I decided to take the 3 month Advance training course at Suki’s academy . This was one of the best decision I ever made . I was very lucky to get my training by a  best group of  , hard working, talented teachers. Suki’s  hired me after I finished the program. 
I am currently working with a great Team 
-Our president and General manager are working very hard to lead the company to be one of the best in the industry 
-Managers are all working hard to help the staff to reach their goal 
-Apprentices are all passionate and  hard working 
-Mentors put their students success first
20 years in the in Hair industry , 10 years with SUKI  I am so proud to be part of the Suki’s family.

Suki's is a great company to work for, they are constantly innovating and changing to keep up with changes happening in not only in the beauty industry, the business industry but in the modern world around us.   They have recently added extended medical/dental/life insurance, they offer 2 free nights of training at one of Vancouver's #1 boutique gyms, they have offered  meditation and anxiety workshops to their staff.  They care about their staff on a personal level and offer them opportunities that are of value to them.  Their level of diverse continued education available is incredible.  They are a group of people that genuinely care for one another which is really rare to find, they have become a second family to me.  

Suki's isn't a salon for everyone, it is a very structure organization and has strong beliefs, but if you join the team you become part of the family, and they will fight for you and grow with you.

Suki's is a pretty good company to work for, it gets a bad rap because they have high expectations and standards for a hair salon.   The staff are nice and friendly, but if you work in one of the bigger salons it takes a little while to get to know 60 people.  I've worked for other salons that don't even pay stat holidays or over time, Suki's is pretty good, they offer incentives like paid training, photo shoots, working events and other experience.  My friend still works there and says they just got extended medical benefits which the company pays for which is pretty cool.  Suki's can be a hard company to work for if you have a bad attitude and don't want to work hard, if I was still in the industry it's where I would be.

Ever since I was an early teen I wanted to work at Suki's, we would pass by the Robson location well shopping. So you can understand my excitement  years later when I was able to join the apprenticeship team. The apprenticeship isn't easy, it isn't designed to be, but it is always worth it. I apprenticed for 2 1/2 years and it was tough but it really prepared me for what its like to work on the floor of a fast paced, high end hair salon. I have been here for 12 years now and have been given the chance to travel, teach, and explore all areas of my career. The staff/culture are amazing, pay is great and, there is benefits. I am extremely happy at Suki's with no plans to ever leave!
