Sunset Grill

Worked there for almost 1.5 years (few months as a cashier, rest as a server) and my god was it a weird experience.

 No managers, owner was rarely there, terribly dirty building, and extended hours WITHOUT pay. Met some pretty cool people there who I still keep in touch with, but all of us quit one by one when new servers were hired and ownership changed.

 Some of the new people were absolutely malicious and not easy to get along with. One was even stealing from the register and change box with no consequences (we have cameras!!!!). They were also completely incompetent and have no idea how to serve. New owners are okay, but they are way too controlling. We went from being completely independent to being micromanaged to the point where we couldnt do our jobs without being questioned about every single thing we did.

Owners also fired all bussing staff, hosts, and cashiers, which made everything 20x more stressful, since we would have a full restaraunt (almost 30 tables) with only 2-3 servers working and no bussing staff to help clean and clear tables. Quality of service suffered greatly due to this. 

Good starting job, but would not reccomend staying long term.

I was happy to be hired at Sunset Grill because it's a well known franchise and you can't beat the hours (7am-3pm).  Unfortunately the owners/managers don't believe in giving their staff any breathing room and that's the main reason why the turnover is SO high.  I tried to stick it out but it's impossible.   It's hard to be micromanaged when the owners have no real clue as to what they're doing.  Even worse, they're terrified of head office so if a customer takes back food, they have to pay for it and you have to deal with it.  No voids.  The ipads used to input the orders freeze constantly (especially when busy) and you're tipping out 4% but constantly running your food/everyone else's food and cleaning your own tables because the only busser they can keep is incompetent (and smells, AND hovers over customers.  Real treat.)  Also - nepotism!  Coupled with the owners inability to keep calm when it's busy and the  cramped layout of the place, any experienced server will usually peace out of there either immediately or within the first month or so.  The pictures they post on social media never have the same staff, see for yourself!  Overall a very frustrating 2 months of my life that I am relieved are over.

Working at Sunset Grill has been an absolute delight. From the moment I joined the team, I knew I was stepping into a dynamic environment filled with warmth and camaraderie. The ambiance of Sunset Grill exudes a welcoming vibe, making every shift feel like a joyous occasion.

This is relating to the Kennedy road and 401 location in Scarborough.
I went for training here, in which I was told I would NOT be compensated for. On top of that, one of the owners wanted me to go out of my way to go downtown to an employment service to sign papers that said they are hiring me. That meant the owners would receive compensation instead for hiring a student or whatever.  
Ridiculous. Also, this Sunset Grill did not serve alcohol but were offering the wage of a restaurant that does (if a restaurant does not serve alcohol, the wage should be regular minimum wage). All the servers I spoke to there also did not receive compensation for their training and were generally unhappy in terms of the management of the place. Stop ripping off the people that make your establishment run.

Cooks are hardworking guys that dish out good food, service is generally quick due to their great tech system, not very personable place at all though. In and out is their main goal.  Management is a major issue - verbally aggressive with employees other than their own daughter. Could be an amazing place - but the level of professionalism is painfully embarrassing.

Tried to get paid for my hours that I worked, after 4 emails and 3 phonecalls, I went in person, they yelled at me in front of other guests dining in, refused to pay me until I returned an apron they accused me of stealing. Felt like they cared more about an apron than what the real issue was, their poor communication and management. You are given positions here based on familiar relation, no competence.

Normally I wouldn't be compelled to write a review however this has to be the worst place I have ever worked.  The location I worked at has the worst case of micromanagement I have ever seen.  The owners are constantly hovering over your shoulder to the point that it makes you feel frazzled.  They add more confusion than necessary.  Serving is not a hard job to do, take orders, wait for the kitchen to cook said orders and deliver.  However the owners of this particular location make you feel like you are stupid.  This is the one and only place I have ever walked out of during a shift.  If you are a newb waitress then this could be a place to get your feet wet, however if you are a seasoned server then run as fast as you can.  If I could give the owners negative stars I would.

I loved connecting with customers everyday and building new relationships with other employees. I  I loved my job, but management really ruined it for me. When it got busy, management never helped. They don’t run food, they won’t talk to a table if there is a complaint, and I’m not even sure they know the table numbers. Yet, they berate us to run our food when they can see we are busy, tell the host 10 seconds is too long for those at the door to be greeted and stand at the front stand staring at people and other employees. This didn’t happen to me because I only work weekends, but other employees have told me they spy on them over the cameras during the week. Because there are two locations in Oakville, let me be specific and mention that this has to do with the located on Cornwall Road. 

As with every serving job, the majority of your income is made from tips; basically every server works on commission. Stress is only experienced when you yourself have not had a good day and your customers have not tipped you well, or the turnover of your tables has been slow, as management at the restaurant is quite lenient and forgiving. The majority of the other servers are college students and younger so the atmosphere is never serious and everyone cares for the general welfare of the restaurant. Also, a free staff meal every shift always gives me something to look forward to! I have learned many social skills being involved in a competitive environment and maintaining focus and attitude in urgent and rushed situations.

I loved working at sunset grill! The staff was very friendly i would always be greeted by the chefs or the manager, the staff was never rude to me in anyways, they always corrected me if i made a mistake and helped me be the best i could!

Everyday i would come into work clock in and start clearing and emptying the garbage which i would do for a few hours until it slowed down and was able to take a break which near closing i we started sweeping and getting ready to close for the end of the day.

Some days i would work as the dish washer because some times she had days off and the chefs are always busy cooking but there are two busers on duty at a time so i was able to be washing dishes and clearing tables at the same time.

Working at Sunset Grill was very comfortable. Throughout the year I learned to really work in a fast paced environment, yet still making customers feel relaxed. Sunset Grill is an all day breakfast restaurant where I learned not only how to be quick and efficient, but interacting and learning new skills (such as overlooking how they cooked in the kitchen) with co-workers and customers. Having this full time job, I was able to easily balance the work load - finding new ways to finish the most important jobs faster and more efficiently, by the end of the work day. Overall, this was a great first full time job, with highly respectable management and a wonderful environment to be in.
