Worked tooth and nail for years for only one (well deserved) pay raise after relentlessly pursuing raise at length over the course of 4 months. Stores are left without managers for months on end because of high manager turnover and lower level employees are expected to pick up the slack with the promise of promotion(s) and raise(s) and are left in the dust when all is settled and their time and effort is already exploited. 

When I was finally promoted (without the promised pay raise -- they said we would "reassess after 3 months") I worked hard and did lots to improve my team and station but I was given no official title (no raise, no evaluation) for the 9 months that I held my position. Any attempt to follow up on the promised pay raise was averted & postponed to a later date. 

Upper management has unreasonable expectations of market managers and gives them little to no resources to accomplish goals that are purely about the bottom line. Lots of questionable practices to reduce waste, overwork staff and increase profit.  Managers are put under intense pressure (and underpaid) which trickles down to every member of Sunterra. Safety of customers and employees are sacrificed for profit. 

LGBTQ* employees should know that blatant harassment was reported and upper management knew and did absolutely nothing. No HR to deal with inner conflicts within the company and there is an ongoing culture of false promises and ignoring problems until they go away. 

MICE!!!!! I HAD TO SWEEP UP DEAD MICE FROM UNDER DINNING GUESTS TABLES DISCREETLY TO COVERUP MICE INFESTATION. -- Ran rampant through the store and it was disgusting. Market managers did everything they could but were not given the resources to deal with the problem. 

You'll love everyone you work with, you'll start to think of them as a family. Market managers and your co-workers care about customers and each other. Upper management uses the veil of "family" and "teamwork" to take advantage of their workers. 

There are countless stories about workers that are taken advantage of -- this is not a personal grudge. IT IS A WARNING!!.

Although the people you work with were fun to be around, the management was something else. Having worked in a couple areas in the store, the front end was by far the most messy. The manager made me feel as though they would get me into a manger role sooner rather than later, only finding out (after a week of training for the role) that they didn’t have 40 hours to give in that role and therefore made me a cashier. Once I was stuck as a cashier, I slowly realized a certain pattern occur where they made me work hours I never wanted nor agreed to. The lack of communication and dishonesty to get me to do what THEY wanted made me frustrated and disappointed. Also, you could never plan anything because you never got your schedule ahead of time. Working the Friday (sometimes even the Saturday) of the current week, you would FINALLY find out if you worked THAT COMING SUNDAY and onward. This too is the worst I have ever experienced in a job. Lastly, upon hire we discussed a wage I thought was fair and was told that would be no problem, only to find out months later (after not receiving the pay stubs in my email) that they were paying me $3 LESS then we agreed upon. If you want a job where there is no chance of moving up in the company and you don’t really mind the lack of scheduling, then it is the place for you. Like I said at the start, the people whom you work with are what made me stay as long as I did. 

For the past six years I have worked at Sunterra Quality Food Markets Inc. in Calgary, AB as a Cash Management Accountant.
My roles and duties included, but not limited to:  downloading and importing the bank statements from our two online banks into excel spreadsheets, where I would compare the daily sales for our 13 locations to the deposits into the banks on a daily basis.  
I was given many opportunities to learn new skills.  
One of the things that I was able to be involved with was being approached by management asking for my help in changing over all the pin pads for each location to chip/pin enabled and then to contactless.
I was also given an opportunity by management to go to Las Vegas for a conference with nQativ, which is the company that developed and manages the accounting system that is used at Sunterra. 
One of the most enjoyable parts of my job was my co-workers.  I worked with a great group of people and without their assistance and input I would not have been able to accomplish all that I did.
The hardest part of my job was actually saying good-bye.  I made the decision to move back to NB so I could be closer to my family, however, leaving Calgary, was not an easy decision and most of it had to do with my co-workers.

I’ve had a really positive experience working here. The management team is professional, approachable, and genuinely cares about both the employees and customers. They create a supportive and respectful work environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Whenever I had questions or needed help, the managers were always patient, understanding, and willing to assist. Their leadership makes the workplace organized, welcoming, and less stressful, even during busy hours.

The staff members are also amazing to work with. Everyone is friendly, cooperative, and ready to help each other out. It feels like being part of a team that encourages growth and teamwork. New employees are welcomed warmly, and coworkers make the effort to create a comfortable and positive atmosphere every day.

One of the things I appreciate most is the flexible scheduling. The company understands that employees have different responsibilities outside of work, and they do their best to accommodate availability whenever possible. This flexibility helped me maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. Overall, it’s a great place to work, and I would definitely recommend it to others looking for a positive and supportive workplace experience.


This was my first job. I was a part-time bakery clerk. Basically helping customers either in person or over the phone, filling showcases, doing minor baking, and cleaning was essentially my job. It gave me great work experience. Although the management wasn't that great, the employees from other departments were really fun to be around. I found that the bakery department had a lot of drama and issues more than the other departments combined. The management didn't really solve any issues, they just talked through everything and thought they solved them. I will say, the managers themselves are really nice and fun people. But when it comes to actually dealing with issues, they don't really help. 
It is a very fast-paced environment. You have to be a very quick worker and get things done on time or else you will be behind the next day, which they hate! Especially during the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you can handle working at Sunterra, you can handle working anywhere!

What is the best part of working at the company?
When I joined the team, the supervisers were amazing.
Unfortunately that all changed, and the hole plant went into a down hill spiral, new team leaders were hired. They had no clue how to bring the pla t back up to its previous state, So myself and 8 others were disgusted in the way they were running things,( very inefficient ) and made a fair bit more work to be done. So we all left.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It was stressful being told by one of the new leaders that I couldn't do a certain job good enough even though I had preformed that job hundreds of times prior with not 1 complaint from anyone. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Was an  awesome team, now it's ever man for himself.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
No good to start with,  when you have to get past his office just to get into the work place, and hope he doesn't question you about your previous days work.

Management is terrible. There is a large turn-over of people in the department.

No recipes are alike and weren't taught. There were no proper training. The training I received was dumbed down due to no proper training to trainer. No one were willing to train because they wanted to keep their easy jobs. You would be stuck with harder jobs.

Be sure to receive gossip and judgement. One mistake gets you told to the top manager. Most coworkers were good but the ones who's stayed a long time mistreat their coworkers. If they dislike you, you will be told to do their work and told on for being slow. Typical of work, people are two-faced.

The salary is sure to be low and you wouldn't get the salary you ask for or was told. There is no advancement within the bakery department, including salary advancement once you're hired.

The best part of the job was the set hours.

Unfortunately, I have observed a lack of organization and what appears to be poor management and HR practices. The work environment has proven to be toxic, with a noticeable absence of respect for employees. It's disheartening to witness the potential of a company with great products and items in Calgary being hindered by such challenges.

One significant issue I've encountered is the deviation from company policies, leading to customers unknowingly consuming spoiled products. It seems there is a lack of supervision from the management regarding the quality of items sold in the market, raising questions about their commitment to maintaining standards.

I believe that addressing these issues is crucial for Sunterra Market to realize its full potential as one of the best and successful companies in Calgary. I hope that the management takes steps to rectify these concerns and considers changes that will benefit both employees and customers.


I don't blame at all the management. There is a group of employees most of them related who speak their own language, hardly they speak English. They control the staff mood and even new workers, constantly they are poisoning the environment and they don't "work" for the company or are team players, they work for them. Even the Sunterra costumers are nice because they don't make a issue about the bad attitude present in front lines by that group of employees to anyone who cross them, they are nice just in the face of the big bosses, during the all day in complicity each others do shopping and in the evening specially weekends they finish working fully load with bags





Upper management is abysmal. They are fond of giving "group pep talks" to purposefully berate, demoralize and humiliate workers, and to keep you in line, even when you did nothing wrong.

Hard workers are punished with more work, lazy workers are never reprimanded.

Overtime hours and wages are miscalculated and stolen. 

You must purchase your own expensive uniforms.

The only upside of working there is the people, who are lovely but often extremely burnt out. 

Their logistics is a complete and utter mess, and thus working there is often very chaotic.

There is zero room for advancement and zero respect.

Overall, working there is an emotionally and mentally scarring experience. Stay away from this company.
