Job Advancement:
There are minimal opportunities for growth. 
Warehouse --> warehouse manager (if available) or salesperson --> Manager in training (if available) --> Store manager (if available)

If people are moving out you will have the opportunity to occupy those positions but I believe there is a long list for those waiting to be DMs so unless you are a cut above the rest you will have to stick around for a long time. 

Daily Work:
Work is often slow with barely any customers coming in however there are periods where work is non-stop and things are flying out of the building. 

Regular warehouse duties include organizing the warehouse, labelling products, assisting with inventory, pulling and inspecting products, moving floor models, reporting damaged goods and parts needed for order.
 
You are expected to maintain the appearance of the store so sweeping, cleaning the bathrooms/mirrors/windows and wiping down furniture falls into warehouse person duties.    

All trailers are unloaded by hand or using dollies (no forklifts) and depending on your location you may not have a dock so everything must be lowered to the ground and into the building.

Quality of Life
A smaller team size means you get to know your co-workers better and changing hours due to emergencies is easier to deal with.       

Overall I would say this business is a great place to work at and gain warehouse experience. The wage does lag behind other similar jobs which is why you'll probably want to move into a bigger centre at some point.

There is literally a script that you are supposed to run on every customer, essentially surplus treats the customers like cattle. People who are just looking have to be turned over to another sales rep which most customers find annoying. Sales reps will constantly talk bad about customers behind their backs. If you respect customers and don't want to treat them like they are mindless idiots, surplus is not for you. This is an atypical sales environment. 

Roleplaying is done constantly to the point at which people goof off because it no longer serves any point. Roleplaying is monitored on camera to make sure employees are doing it.

Surplus is a stunning example of a workplace where someone tells you to do something one way, then someone else tells you that way is wrong. Ultimately in the end you are blamed for doing it wrong. The company will literally make you pay for credit card fraud if you fail to check a customers ID. For example if someone purchases a sofa loveseat and bed for $2,148 and pays for it with a stolen credit card and you fail to check their ID properly the company will make you pay $2,148 out of your pocket.

Workplace favoritism is very much alive at surplus. A typical get your friend hired and bad talk other sales reps to management.


Surplus is built on an archaic sales program and supports antiquated ideologies.

difficult retail hours, a typical day is starting with morning meeting setting daily goals, high commissions are achieved by selling extended warranties, financing along with furniture delivered, then when store opens sales rotation begins by who arrives first. We follow a script however each customer approach is different so you have to adjust to what the customer is looking for by asking probing questions. Constant role playing making sure you follow the script which for the most part is rarely used in real sales situations even by the managers.Very little product knowledge training. Hardest part of he job is trying to make target. Reason being is that when there is a full sales staff on Saturday which is the busiest day. With 6 sales staff working sales was less to go around. When there was less people sales were better. Management has two people a manager and manager in training. The manager in training was far better then the manager. The one thing is the company doesn't allow you to develop your own customer base by bringing people in for sales. You have to share it with the person who is next on the rotation. 


The team when I was there we're amazing to work with! 
However for my overall experience at the Owen Sound Surplus store.
Good luck making anything over minimum wage. They will promise you that if you follow their guidelines in sales, that you will be at the top of sales. When in reality you won't even be able to reach your target for the months. 
For management. 
My store manager was great and did the best that they could do given the fact that they had never been properly trained. I as the once MIT had to take care of anything the manager didnt know from lack of training causing stress and endless days of work. 
For work hours. Be prepared to be working 11-hour days everyday. And good luck trying to book off time especially weekends and holidays!.

Also the advertisement shows how much that you'd be making per year and I have to tell you that is completely false advertisement when I worked there I didn't make nearly as much as they have advertised on indeed!

Fun sales environment and great people. A job that isn't really a job. 
I personally don't feel like its work when I go to work.

A person with little to no sales experience can succeed and make good money. A top sales person can write their own ticket on advancement with this company.

As a sales associate, if you enjoy talking to people and selling good quality furniture and mattresses, then this is the place for you. Even if you have no experience but like people, then you can succeed at this company.

If you want to be a manager of your own store, they have many opportunities throughout Canada. Success and advancement depends on you and you alone in any job or position.

Since coming to Surplus, my personal experience is if you want to be successful then work hard and the hard work will pay off. Only you can decide how far you go.

Warehouse is a good job for students looking to work while studying.
You can get a decent workout some days from all the heavy lifting.
Our warehouse is a great entry level job to help you build experience before applying to other facilities. 
Boss and coworkers are great to work with and make going to work much better. 




There are limited opportunities for advancement warehouse—> sales—> manager in training—> store manager. Of course mit and manager are only possible if positions are free. 

Days vary greatly with some days having no sales and others a nonstop rush.

Work responsibilities of the warehouse 
Dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, unloading/loading trucks (no forklift), organizing warehouse, preparing pickups or deliveries, inspecting items going for delivery, assembling floor models or products for customers, filling out parts requests, destroying claimed items.

I enjoy working here in sales with my team. A typical day at work involves assisting customers, managing sales, and keeping the store organized. I have learned a lot about communication, customer service, and product knowledge, which has helped me grow professionally. The management is supportive and approachable, always encouraging us to improve. The workplace culture is positive, friendly, and team-oriented. The hardest part of the job is handling very busy days with multiple customers at once, but even that helps build problem-solving skills. The most enjoyable part is working with my staff and interacting with customers, as I am always learning something new every day.

There are few companies that can provide the work/life balance that this one can, and even fewer that can provide that with such an uplifting and fun atmosphere. After trudging through mediocre electronic sales jobs with marginal returns on my investment of time, I discovered the opportunity with Surplus Furniture. This company has changed my life. They have rewarded me handsomely for my hard work, not only through compensation, but the advancement opportunities that have been opened to me along the way. I have been encouraged and guided every step of the way and now have the fortuitous opportunity to run my own store. From the training program to upper management, this company is a well oiled machine and I recommend it to anyone looking to make huge strides in their career, personally, and financially.

A typical day of work consists of opening duties, checking my work area making sure everything is in working order then start to clean the store light dusting, vacuuming, mopping and cleaning wash rooms, duties also include preparing and loading up furniture that customers bought and unloading products off of transports. I find unloading transports is the hardest part and the best part is building furniture to put in the showroom. I have learned how to organize furniture in different ways and how to find the most amount of space to work with. The management here is very good they work well together and deal with all issues professionally and in a timely manner they are understanding if you need a day off or have to schedule you differently if need be.

You will get back what you put into this company, the opportunities are there if you show up, put the work in, and are dedicated to the task and process. I’ve been in sales for almost 20 years and I can say that this is a great company to work for, they promote from within, provide extensive training and a pathway for an uncapped income.  Best part is the amazing coworkers that you will be working with along the way!!!  The company provides benefits and coaching, flexible work schedules, and sales contests like the yearly Viva Las Vegas contest, which is earned not given!!  If you are a seasoned sales veteran or looking to get into sales,  I would highly recommend to find your nearest location and apply.  P.s….The president of the company also does yearly turkey/hams at Thanksgiving And Christmas, just a small gesture that each employee is appreciated.
